TLP – Academic Recess Brain Breaks
ProProfs Brain Games

BASIC INFORMATION
Summary Students will take a short, individual brain break in order to
relax, recharge, and get ready to bounce back for the next
assignment. This website has many different types of games
with varying levels of difficulty and subject matter.
Grade Level 1​st​-6th
Time Frame 1-20 minutes
Subject(s) ELA (some games could potentially fall under the subject of
math, but the most appealing games to educators are ELA based)
Topic(s) Students having a brain break using the website ProProfs Brain
Games that focuses on combining fun and learning.
Instructional Materials ● Computer/Laptop/Tablet
● Response journal
● Pencil/pen
STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES
CA Content Standard(s) Due to the wide variety of subjects to choose from as the theme
for each game, standards can be from English, History, and
Science.
Language Standards K-5

Lesson Objective(s) - Students will take an academically based, but still fun, brain
break to give them a chance to relax and refocus for the next
task/assignment they will be asked to complete.
PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS
UDL ProProfs Brain Games has many different types of games
ranging from crossword puzzles, word searches, hangman, word
scrambles all the way to chess, checkers, sudoku, and puzzles.
There are different themes the student can choose as well. This
means there are word puzzles/word searches that have a
centralized theme like words related to tenses, synonyms &
antonyms, geography, history and science (etc.)
ASSESSMENT
Assessment of Learning After completing the puzzle/game, students are given a score
(number correct/number total) and when applicable, a time in
which they completed the task.
LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Sequence of Activities ● Students retrieve a computer/device to access the
internet.
● Students log into Academic Recess
● If only allowed certain games/themes of games,
students can click on what they have been permitted to
● Students complete their puzzle/game
● After completion of their brain break, students will take
out their response journal
● Record progress/minutes/results
● Respond in the journal with readiness to focus on next
assignment
CLOSURE Students will complete their Journal response and rate their
level of readiness for the next assignment/lesson.
