Green City: By: Brooke

Stockholm, Sweden Toni Dismuke
❖ 40% of energy consumption has been cut at 190
schools through smart use of IT.
❖ Stockholm has implemented thousands of
passive houses. The apartments are estimated
to require half as much energy as a normal
building. Since they have extra insulation,
effective heat recovery and energy-efficient
windows, they can be heated mainly from body
heat, electrical appliances, lighting and sunlight.
❖ Järva have now developed into the most solar
frequent district in Sweden, with more than
10,000 m2 solar panels installed. The solar
panels will generate 1.3 million kWh solar
energy per year and cover up to 20 percent of
the energy consumption in the housing units.
❖ Stockholm has already decided to go fossil fuel
free by 2040.

❖ Urban farming in allotment
gardens has long been a popular
pastime among
Stockholmers.Residents share a
piece of land cultivated into
gardens where they grow fruits
and vegetables.
❖ Koloniträdgårdförbundet (the
Association of Allotment Gardens)
oversees this initiative
❖ The 100 year-old organisation
represents over 25,000 members
and 260 member organisations,
including urban farmers and
gardening collectives. Agriculture

❖ A key component of the Mobility
Strategy is a special focus on bicycles
as a means of transport.
❖ During the past ten years, the number
of cyclists has increased by 76 percent
– a result of the city’s investments in
improved cycling infrastructure and
Stockholmers’ increased interest in
and desire to cycle
❖ Stockholm, Sweden has implemented
the metro system as a part of the
Mobility strategy. The metro system is
a congestion charge and investments
in clean vehicles and renewable fuels.
The goal is for all public transport to
be fossil-fuel free by 2025.

❖ Sweden has long had a can and bottle
deposit system that gives people money
back when they recycle – since1984 for
aluminium cans, and since 1994 for
plastic bottles.
❖ Each year Swedes recycle 1.8 billion
bottles and cans that would otherwise be
thrown away using the so-called pant
system. It even has its own verb in
Swedish, panta.
❖ 4,783,000 tonnes of household waste was
managed in Sweden in 2017, which
equals 473 kilos per person per year.
❖ 50% of the household waste was turned
into energy. Waste

❖ Since 1990, Sweden has been
working toward reducing the
acidification of lake water and
reaching its renewable energy goal of
50 percent by 2020
❖ The water quality in Sweden is
currently at a very high standard. The
lake water passes through various
stages of purification before it is
distributed as drinking water
❖ Half of Sweden’s local water supply is
derived from the 95,700 lakes and
watercourses that dominate its
landscape. The other half is extracted
from groundwater. Water

❖ According to the Air quality Index,
Stockholm has an average of 46 score
a day.
❖ In 2017, Stockholm’ s air quality was
its best in 50 years with all but one of
its measuring stations meeting the
strict Swedish requirements.
❖ “The air quality in Stockholm was
better in 2017 than at any time since
the 1960s, thanks to less polluting
modern cars, a congestion charge,
and unusually windy weather” (The
Local, 2018).

❖ There weren’t many statistical reports on the
overall health of people in Stockholm, but
from an article about an American’s
experience in Stockholm, it can be inferred
that people in Stockholm are at least healthier
than Americans.
❖ She states that due to fact that food in
Sweden focuses more on moderation than the
extremes in America.
➢ The portion were normal size and smaller
compared to America
➢ there were less hidden sugars
➢ the infrastructure of Stockholm promotes
exercise, such as walking more to
different destinations.
Despite eating foods that we as Americans see as
“unhealthy,” she was overall in better health in
Sweden. Public Health

❖ As you see in the agricultural land table above,
the majority of Sweden is forested land,
followed by healthland and herb meadows.
❖ In the residential land table, the majority of
Sweden is transport infrastructure, followed
by land with one- or two-dwelling buildings.
❖ There is more agricultural land use than
residential.

❖ Stockholm is different from other cities.
Instead of focusing on making specific
buildings green, their development plan
focuses on making entire neighborhoods
more efficient and sustainable.
❖ For example, the current sustainable
project that they are working on the
Stockholm Royal Seaport, which is being
developed to follow Sweden’s very strict
efficiency and environmental standards.
❖ Some of the standards include:
➢ 55 kilowatt hours per square meter
per year
➢ greenhouse gas emissions below 1.5
per person by 2020 and fossil free by
2030.
