During my time at Regent, I have had the
opportunity to learn about integration across
the curriculum in my courses, practicums, and
student teaching placements. It is extremely

In my 3rd grade placement, I was able to be a
part of pre-service week, this allowed me to
build strong relationships with the team as
well as other teachers throughout the school.
At my first placement, we had weekly
collaborations that took place on Fridays
in learning, and self motivation.
Standard 4: Content Knowledge
The teacher understands the central concepts,
tools of inquiry, and structures of the
discipline he or she teaches and creates
learning experiences that make these aspects
of the discipline accessible and meaningful
for learners to assure mastery of the content.

During my first placement, I had access to the
VBCPS curriculum and was able to look
ahead and prepare myself to teach the
upcoming lessons. I valued this experience of
being able to explore and navigate the
curriculum and be able to study it and the
subjects I was teaching on. I did not have the
same luxury at my second placement, but I
did my best to stay on top of plans even if
they were only done one week at a time.

During my placements, I tried to remain
culturally aware of everyone's beliefs and
backgrounds to create a diverse learning
environment. In 3rd grade it was easy to
incorporate culture into the content due to the
social studies curriculum lining up with
cultural diversity at the time. It is important to
respect and be aware of the beliefs in your
classroom so you can make sure everyone
understands the different backgrounds we all
come from and bring that to the classroom.

Standard 6: Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple
methods of assessment to engage learners in
their own growth, to monitor learner
progress, and to guide the teacher's and
learner's decision making.

every student in meeting rigorous learning
goals by drawing upon knowledge of content
areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills,

During both placements, instruction was
heavily based on previous knowledge that we
determined through pre-assessment. This
allowed small-groups to form for those who
needed it the most and that way instruction
became more intimate than only having a
whole group learning experience. Assessment
at my first placement was created by the 3rd
grade team based on the assessment the city
provided. During my second placement there
was a CAT team that created assessments that
were not allowed to be manipulated in any
way.

During both of my placements, I ensured that
I was ready for each day by having my plans
ready to go and study them before the day
they would be taught to understand the
material myself. My first placement involved
more of creating my own lesson plans and my
second placement was based on what the 2nd
grade team had for plans as a whole. Strategic
planning ensures high-quality lessons that can
work across the curriculum and involve a
variety of techniques and resources.

During both of my placements, I made sure
that the parents of the students knew who I
was right away. I wanted them to feel
comfortable communicating with me about
any issues their child may have been having
in the classroom. I was able to attend
conferences as well as a CSC meeting with
parents where I was able to bring forward my
classroom observations. I also had one-on-one
collaboration meeting with the gifted resource
teacher in order to strategically plan lessons
that would benefit the class.
