DMM3673 Mechanical Design

Assignment 1 201520162 (100%)

Due Date: Monday, 14 March 2016, During Class

Question 1
Force, F = 950 N causes twisting & bending of a 20 mm diameter shaft fixed to a support at
the origin of the reference system at A. The shaft is made of ductile material of AISI 1050
hot-rolled steel. In actuality, the support may be an inertia that we wish to rotate, but for the
purposes of a stress analysis we can consider this a static problem.
a) Calculate the torsional stress and bending stress at the top surface of the shaft at A.
(6 Marks)
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stresses at the top surface of the shaft at A
for yielding using maximum shear stress and distortion energy theories. Compare and
comment about the results.
(24 Marks)
Question 2
The shaft is loaded by the forces F = 0.75 kN, P = 10.0 kN and T = 55 N.m. The shaft is
made of ductile material of AISI 1030 cold-drawn steel.
a) Calculate all the stresses at point A and B.
(6 Marks)
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stresses at point A and point B for yielding
using maximum shear stress and distortion energy theories. Compare and comment
about the results.
(24 Marks)
Question 3
Force, F = 850 N causes twisting & bending of a 25 mm diameter shaft fixed to a support at
the origin of the reference system at A. The shaft is made of ductile material of AISI 1095
hot-rolled steel. In actuality, the support may be an inertia that we wish to rotate, but for the
purposes of a stress analysis we can consider this a static problem.
a) Calculate the stress components at point a and point b.
(12 Marks)
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stresses at point a and point b for yielding
using maximum shear stress and distortion energy theories. Compare and comment
about the results.
