Chapter 1 Power Plant Engineering


1 An Ericsson cycle operating with an ideal regenerator works between 1100 K and 288
K. The pressure at the beginning of isothermal compression is 1.013 bar. Determine
(a) the compressor and turbine work per kg of air, and (b) the cycle efficiency.
Ans. (a) 465 kJ/kg, 121.8 kJ/kg (b) 73.8%
2 In a gas turbine plant working on the Brayton cycle the air at the inlet is at 27°C, 0.1
MPa. The pressure ratio is 6.25 and the maximum temperature is 800°C. The turbine
and compressor efficiencies are each 80%. Find (a) the compressor work per kg of air,
(b) the turbine work per kg of air, (c) the cycle efficiency
Ans. (a) 259.4 kJ/kg, (b) 351.68 kJ/kg, (c) 16.2%
3 A simple gas turbine plant operating on the Brayton cycle has air inlet temperature
27°C, pressure ratio 9, and maximum cycle temperature 727°C. What will be the
improvement in cycle efficiency if the turbine process Is divided into two stages each
of pressure ratio 3, with intermediate reheating to 727°C?
Ans. -16.3%,
4 In a gas turbine plant, air at 10˚C and 1 bar is compressed to 12 bar with isentropic
efficiency of 80%. The air is heated first in regenerator and thenin cumbustion
chamber till temperature of 1400˚C and during the process, pressure falls by 0.2
bar.the air is then expanded in the turbine and then pass through the regenerator
which has an effectiveness of 0.75 and cause a pressure drop of 0.2 bar. Isentropic
efficiency of turbine is 85%. Determine the thermal efficiency of plant. Assume
addition of heat at constant pressure.
5 A small power plant produce the steam at 3 MPa, 6000C in the boiler. It keep the
condenser at 450C by transfer for 10 MW out as heat transfer. The first turbine section
expand to 500 KPa and then flow is reheated followed by expansion in low pressure
turbine. Find the turbine output if the steam at outlet of turbine is saturated vapour.

6 Air (Cp = 1kJ / kg,g = 1.4) enters a compressor at a temperature of 27°C. the
compressor pressure ratio is 4. Assuming an efficiency of 80%, find the compressor
work required in kJ/kg.

Chapter 2 I.C.Engine
1 A 6 cylinder 4 stroke S I engine of 10 cm bore and 12 cm stroke with compression ratio
6 is tested at 4800 rpm on a dynamometer of arm 55cm. During a 10 minutes test the
dynamometer reads 45 kg and engine consume 5 kg of petrol of C V of 45 MJ//kg. find
the brake power and brake mean effective pressure.

2 Following data are known for four stroke petrol engine:
Engine dimension : 11 cm bore and 13 cm stroke
Engine speed: 2250 rpm, brake power: 50 KW, friction power: 15 KW fuel
consumption rate : 10.5 kg/ h, CV : 50000 KJ/kg air inhalation rate: 300kg/h, ambient
condition: 150 C, 1 bar, find brake mean effective pressure and volumetric efficiency
Ans. 5.39 bar, 72%
3 A liquid fuel C7H16 is burned, find the mass of air required per kg of fuel. If 10% more
air than stoichiometric air is required then find the mass of air per kg of fuel.

4 During Morse test on 4 cylinder engine, following measurement of brake power are
taken:
When all cylinders are firing: 5000 KW
Cylinder no. 1 is cut off: 4000 KW
Cylinder no. 2 is cut off: 3500 KW
Cylinder no. 3is cut off: 3500 KW
Cylinder no. 4 is cut off:3000 KW
Find the friction power and mechanical efficiency.

5 An engine operates on air fuel ratio of 16 volumetric efficiency 90% indicated thermal
efficiency is 25 %. The density of air is 1.2 kg/m3 and CV is 40000 KJ/kg. Find the
indicated mean effective pressure.

6 An diesel engine has compression ratio of 16 and cut off take place at 10% of stroke
find the air standard efficiency of cycle when ratio of specific heat is 1.4

7 An engine working on Otto cycle has compression ratio as 6 and thermal efficiency is
51%. The pressure variation during the heat addition is 20 bar and ratio of specific
heat is 1.4. Find the mean effective pressure.

Chapter 3 Refrigeration
1 Determine the ideal COP of an absorption refrigerating system in which the heating,
cooling, and refrigeration take place at 197°C, 17°C, and –3°C respectively.
2 A dense air refrigeration machine operating on Bell Coleman cycle operates between 3.4 bar
and 17 bar.temp. of air after cooler ia 150C and after refrigerator is 60C. The refrigerator
capacity is 6 tonnes. Calculate:
Work of compressor and expander and theortical COP.
Ans. 35.44 KW, 22.89 KW, 1.67
3 A Bell Coleman refrigeration system is used to produce 10 tons of refrigeration . The
cooler and refrigerator pressure are 4.2 bar and 1.4 bar. Air is cooled in coolee to 450C
and temperature of air at inlet of compressor is -200C. For an ideal cycle, calculate COP

mass flow rate per minutes. Assume Cp =1.005 KJ/kg.K.

4 An Amonia ice plant operates between a condenser temperature of 350C and
evaporator temperature of -150C. It produces 10 tons of ice per day from water at 320C
to ice at – 30C. Assume simple saturation cycle
Take specific heat of water=4.18 Kj/kg.k Specific heat of Ice = 1.94 Kj/kg.k

Chapter 4 Psychrometry
1 For air at 350 C and 50 % relative humidity find the humidity and degree of saturation.
Assume at 350 C saturation pressures: 5.628 Kpa. Barometric reading : 760 mm of Hg.
Ans. 17.7 gm/kg of d.a., 0.48
2 80 gm of water vapour is presented in 10 kg of dry air. Atmospheric pressure and
temperature is 1 bar and 250 C. Given that the saturation pressure of water at 250 C is
0.0317 bar. Then find the specific humidity and relative humidity.
Ans. 8 gm/kg of d.a., 40 %
3 Air at 40% relative humidity and 200 C dry bulb temperature is heated to 400 C with
the help of the heating coil. The surface temperature of heating coil is 450 C. find the
bypass factor of heating coil.

4 In an air conditioning room, sensible heat factor is 0.8. if 50 kj/sec of sensible heat is
rejected from air conditioned room then find the latent heat load of air conditioned
room.

5 Find the different properties of air at 300C dry bulb temperature and 200 C wet bulb
temperature. Saturation pressure at 200 C and 300C are 0.00234 bar and 0.004243 bar
Barometric reading is 760 mm of Hg and latent heat at 00C is 2500 KJ/kg.

is 0.00737 bar. Barometric reading is 760 mm of Hg and latent heat at 00C is 2500
KJ/kg.
