2. Match the letter M to /m/ the sound;
3. Identify pictures that begin with /m/ sound.

Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
Alphabets letter and sounds mat, Letter Mm card, marshmallows, Uppercase M cutouts,
letter M cards, hole punchers, puppet, letter Mm sound cards

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event:
1. Before reading the book, introduce the vocabulary words.
Read the book “If you give a moose a muffin” by Laura Numeroff.
2. Introduce the letter Mm by emphasizing the beginning sound of moose and muffin
3. Sing a letter M song (to the tune off Mary had a Little Lamb)
Letter M says /m/, /m/, /m/ (3 times)
like muffin and moose
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
Small Group Rotations:
Group A: Alphabet Letter recognition and sounds mat
Students will sort out the letter cards and the pictures on the mat.
Enrichment: Have students sort out more letters.
Group B: M is for Marshmallow
Students will glue the marshmallow into the letter M cutout.
To exercise fine motor muscles, Once the glue is dry practiced mashing the
marshmallow. Students will say the /m/ sound each time they mashed a
marshmallow.
Group C: Letter M hole punching
Students will identify the picture, trace the word, and say the beginning letter
sound. They will punch out both the upper case and lower case letters Mm

Assessment:
1. Informally assess students’ abilities during station activities by asking the students to
identify the letter and its sound.

2. End of the week: Introduce the female puppet with a name Mary.
Tell them she can only eat picture cards of letter M words.
Give each student one picture card of something that begins with M and two picture cards
of things that do not begin with the letter M. For example: a monkey, a crab, and a house.
Tell them to feed Mary the card that begins with the letter M.
Go to each student and allow them to give the puppet a letter M card.
If they choose the wrong card, let the puppet get a tummy ache and let them try again.
