Total Time: 100 minutes

● Student data from Jim Koch

Teaching Teams will be the same as from the original lessons;

Partner A will work with Skittles, Partner B will work with Soccer.

Whole Group Skittles Activity (20 min) --Dan,

● Each student will get: a pack of skittles, Skittles graphic organizer, and a number.
● Sort skittles by color then fill in their row (based on assigned student number). Each
student puts their individual data up on board into the large group chart.
● Students work with their UMF student to put their data in the group spreadsheet
○ Each of the teachers will have their laptop; two students per teacher inputting
data

Small Groups--Stations (14min each * 3 +3 min transition time) Students will move from table
to table; each table has worksheet using the same template of definition, example, “your work”
● Review how to calculate Mean, --Dan (Skittles Team) & Sarah (Soccer Team)
● Determine Mode and Range--Ben (Skittles Team) & Keely (Soccer Team)
● Calculate Median by color--Aurora (Skittles Team) & Josh (Soccer Team)

Whole Group Soccer Stats Activity (30 min)

● Present a set of soccer data to analyze using the mean, median, mode, and range
● Make the transition from skittles to soccer (#of skittles = teams/ colors = soccer stats)

● 15 min Split the mls teams up into 3 sets of 8. Give each group of 4 a different set. Each
individual does mean, median, range and mode of a specific stat for each team. Then in
each group, people pair up based on which stat they have and discuss the teams stats
in pairs (this will be organized so that goals is with shots on goal, and pk goals is with pk
attempts).
● 6 min Guiding Questions: Compare your stats. What can we take away from these stats?
About what approximate % of shots on goal lead to goals, or pka’s lead to pkg’s? What
does each of these categories of data tell you about the teams?
● 9 min After 4 min discussion, students break into 3’s with the others that had the same
stat as them for different team sets (goal, sog, pkg, pka). They have another 4 min
discussion on stats for the different teams. Guiding Questions: Which set of teams had
the highest mode for your stat? Range? Mean? What about lowest? Put in your own
words what (mode, range, mean) means. Compare and Contrast. For which category of
data (goals scored, shots on goal,....) is the higher statistic (mean, mode,...) good? Bad?
For which category of data (goals scored,...) is the lower statistic (mean, mode) good?
bad?
