What is ERP?
If we talk about ERP, it is defined as the “Enterprise Resource Planning” which allows us to use a system
of integrated applications to manage our daily transactions and our businesses within the organizations.
Further it is being said specifically that an ERP system are large integrated computer systems which
integrate the system applications programs in accounts and finance, sales and production and
manufacturing and the other functions in the organization.
An ERP system typically uses multiple components based on computer’s hardware and software and
certain elements to complete the process of integration.
The most important ingredient of most of the ERP systems is the use of integrated and unified database
to store data for various system modules.
Further breakdown of ERP modules, it consists of HR, Sales, Finance, Accounts and Manufacturing.

Introduction
As we know that an ERP system is designed specifically to help in business, both in respect to growth
and value. An ERP system can handle from large multi-national corporations to SMEs and helps to run
their businesses.
The company that we have chosen for our project is Abacus Consulting Pvt-Ltd. Abacus consulting is
founded in the year 1987 by Asad Ali Khan. The company is based on partnership. In the past thirty
years, this company has been offering well designed business solutions with which they are helping the
organizations to transform their visions and goals into realities by the verity of combination of the latest
business methodologies and technological advancement tools. The business value offered by Abacus has
a deep scale, is industry focused and technology driven with a world class delivery capability.
From the time period of the year 1987 to up till now, this company exceeded the limitations of business
transformation services industry in Pakistan. The thirty year journey of Abacus, This company have been
involved with a focus on creating strong partnership with international industries and providing equal
investment in widening to the company’s global reach. This company has expanded their operations
and they have offices in five different countries. Abacus consulting serving almost six hundred enterprise
clients all around the world with a unique focus on diversified markets.

Challenges/Impact and the need for ERP
As we all know that technology is dominating everything. Without an ERP system, organizations would
have gone in isolation status and therefore it will become impossible to achieve the desired goals.

We would like to present a real case of Imtiaz super market, for we know the need of ERP is really
important. According to our meeting with an ERP specialist, we have been informed that in year 2015
July, when Imtiaz was covering outlet coverage by opening a new branch in Gulshan, It was using SAPB1
but an older version of that software. Managers didn’t know that data would be overflown in the main
stream servers. Eventually on the opening ceremony of Imtiaz Gulshan, sales boosted within days and
Imtiaz lost its inventory control over this problem. The older version of SAPB1 was not compatible with
such huge amount of data, thus the software was lagging and it was difficult to maintain record for
inventory and supply.

In July 2015, a team of Abacus’s ERP professionals went to resolve the issues with the software. It took
almost 2 weeks for them to install the newer version of the software. It was a big challenge for Abacus
to implement a new version of the ERP software while managing the old version. There was no pause in
the transaction of Imtiaz, and the business was running properly while installing the new software.

The project was a success, since then Imtiaz’s overall ERP systems is being handled by Abacus
Consulting.

Conclusion
ERP enables companies to reduce the time duration it takes for to receive or deliver goods. ERP helps to
increase the sales and cash-flow. Different locations can use and see the same data regardless of the
physical geography and eliminates the knees for storing redundant data in multiple physical locations.
ERP helps the companies to increase the productivity by integrating the different components and
process data across multiple departments.
