Chapter III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURE

This chapter, presenting the methods and procedures of the study, includes the research

design, instrumentation, data gathering procedures and the statistical procedures used.

Research Design

This study is descriptive. It attempts to find out and explain the current state of
sex education in Puerto Princesa City. It will be carried out through a survey among 100 teen-

agers aged 13-19 years old. The researchers will use a questionnaire that they themselves have

made. The results of this survey will describe how effective sex education is in preventing teen-

age pregnancy as perceived by 100 respondents, teen-agers aged 13 to 19 years old.

Step 7
Evaluating how effective sex education is
The flow chart shows the steps that the researchers will follow in order to determine how

effective sex education is. Step 1 is a review of the contents and purposes of sex education. Step

2 is the formulation of a questionnaire based on the data from Step 1. Step 3 will be the pre-

testing of the questionnaire among 20 teen-agers aged 13-19 years old in order to find out it all

the items in it are clear to the respondents. Step 4 is the revision of the questionnaires as needed

depending on the comments/suggestions of the pre-test respondents. Step 5 involves the

administration of the questionnaire to the respondents of these study, 100 teen-agers aged 13 –

19 years. Step 6 is the tallying of the data, the respondents’ answers to the questions in the

questionnaire. In Step 7 the researchers will evaluate how effective sex education is in

preventing teenage pregnancy based on the respondents’ answers.

Instrumentation

The researchers will use a six (6) item questionnaire which they have constructed based

on the possible answers that the respondents may think of based on our interviews with teen-

agers, what we learned in high school, what has been suggested by our Dean, Mrs. Casis RN,

MSN, and what we learned from our readings on sex education for teen-agers. Each item has a

varying number of selections from which the respondents will choose what applies to them. In

case their reasons are not mentioned on the selections given, they may write it in a space

provided for other reasons. The respondents may opt to write their name or not, but should write

their right age.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will make a questionnaire to be answered by 100 teen-agers aged 13-19

years old to be chosen by means of convenience sampling. T he researchers will do a pre-test of

the questionnaires among twenty (20) teen-agers aged 13-19 years old who will not be a part of

the group of 100 respondents for this study. Based on the comments and suggestions of the 20

pre-test respondents, the researchers will make revisions in their questionnaire.

The researcher will explain the objectives of this study to the respondents before they

administer the questionnaire personally. The will also assure the respondents of confidentiality

of their responses in order to gain their cooperation and honesty. Respondents will be given a

choice to write their name on the questionnaire or not.

Procedure for Data Analysis

The effectiveness of sex education will be determined from the results of the survey.

First, the researchers will have a range of scores in the questionnaire in order to determine if sex

education is effective, slightly effective or not effective in preventing teen-age pregnancy as

perceived by each respondent. The checks on each item will be counted. If the score is 0- 4, it

will be interpreted as not effective; 5- 9, as slightly effective; and 10- 14 as effective. Then they

will tally the results to find out how many of the respondents have indicated effective, slightly

effective and not effective sex. The highest score among this will indicate if sex education is

effective, slightly effective, or not effective.

The other data that will be gathered from the respondents’ answers such as presenting

their perceptions of sex education, the need for sex education as part of the school curriculum,
and if their perceptions are in harmony with purposes of sex education will be tallied.

Frequency counts and percentages will also be used in analyzing these data.
