The poem "Kawat Sa Tubig" by Kristian Sendor Corden is a Bicol poem that talks about
the behavior of the son and the father. Let us have some summary about the poem before we
criticize it. Kawat sa tubig is a good or shall I say a wonderful poem. It tells about the son who
used to play with water and the father who always keeps telling and shouting his son to stop
playing water but time goes by when the son reached the adult age, he doesn't play with water
anymore but his father does. Everything changed, now the son is the one who keeps yelling his
In this poem I'm going to use psychoanalytic criticism. Let us first know what
psychoanalytic criticism is? Who develops it? What are the questions to be answered using
psychoanalytic criticism? As I have found out, according to the author D.Z Philips that there are
10 questions to be answered using psychoanalytic but I only chose four question to use. I also
found out that psychoanalytic criticism aims to discover and interpret some behavior of human.
According to Sigmund Freud who develops the psychoanalytic criticism that the person has
three essential parts as the human personality. These are the Id, Ego, and Super ego. Now we
will criticize the poem using psychoanalytic approach. These are some question to be answered
scientifically. We all know that our brains have parts such as cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla
if I'm not mistaken. It also has nerves. These parts help our brains to work but if we are going to
talk about it in psychologically, I can say that it depends upon the behavior of the person.
Example if you have a genetic of being a liar, your mind works fast to think something which is
not true and tell it to a certain person. If you are a generous person your mind might tell you to
when we are growing up because our brains are continuously developing until it dies. What I
mean is when we are getting old our brains work slowly. Example, some old people experience a
short term of Alzheimer and some are lifetime. They can easily forget something they just have
did. Just like in the poem. The father plays with water which he not used to do when he was
young.
In number three question. Let us relate it to the poem. The root cause of psychological
problems in the poem is the behavior of the father because he is experiencing a short term of
represented is the ego. The ego tells you to yell to a certain person who is not listening to what
you are saying, because of the ego the son yells his father to stop playing water. The same with
psychoanalytic approach. I discussed the meaning of the psychoanalytic approach and who
develops it.
