Step 1: You connect a USB flash drive, and Windows ponders it for a minute or two. At long last,
a message appears such as USB not recognized. Now what? When that dreaded error occurs, here
are some steps to take to troubleshoot:
Try this: Why would this help?
Disconnect and reconnect the device To see if the USB was connected properly
Try a different USB Port To determine if the USB Port is bad/good or
compatible with the USB
Try device in a different computer To make sure USB is getting proper power
supply
Run Windows Update To make sure all drivers are updated properly
Reboot USB/computer may have gone to sleep; check
for updates
Check the device manufacturers web site for To make sure the correct driver is installed
drivers
Check for motherboard driver or firmware To make sure that all is compatible with the
updates, and install any if any are found. USB
Use device manager to check your USB To make sure that the USB isn’t pulling any
controller power or asleep.
Step 2: For each of the entries in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category in Device manager
that has a Power tab in its Properties Box, Record the following:
Device Name Total Power Devices Attached Power Required for
Available Each Attached Device
USB Root Hub 500 mA per Port 5 Available 0 mA
USB Root Hub 500 mA per Port 2 available 0 mA
USB Root Hub 500 mA per Port 5 Available 0 mA
USB Root Hub 500 mA per Port USB Mass Storage 200 mA
Device
USB Root Hub 500 mA per Port HID Keyboard 100 mA
HID Mouse 98 mA
Step 3: follow these steps to try out the Safely remove hardware tool.
A. Connect an external USB drive to the PC
B. Write a file to it
C. In the notification area, click the safely remove hardware icon
D. On the menu that appears, click the Eject command for the connected device
E. Try accessing the connected device. What happens?
a. Will not access the device.
F. Disconnect and reconnect the device. Then try accessing it again. What happens?
a. It recognized the device and accessed it.
Step 4:
1. What was the best transfer rate for the 16-MB file?
a. Between 4MB/s and 8 MB/s
2. What was the best transfer rate for the 2 KB file?
a. 2.32 MB/s
3. (Optional) if available, test other USB flash drives, and/or different USB ports on your PC,
to see if the results vary. How did the results vary, if at all?
a. Do not have any other USB flash drives available to test.
Step 2: Now that you have learned some of the relevant specifications, the next step is to practice
removing and installing the sound card:
A. What type of slot does the sound card use?
a. Built into the Motherboard. It Is an AMD High Definition with a Realtek
chipset.
B. What sort of internal connectors does the card have?
a. Not Applicable due to it being built into the motherboard.
C. What sort of external connectors does it have?
a. Built into the motherboard, but still supports analog input/output.
Step 5:
1. Is the speaker plugged into a working AC outlet or have batteries?
A. Working AC outlet.
2. Is there a volume adjustment knob on your speakers?
a. Yes.
Step 7: Now suppose that your sound system is working, but your speakers are a little rough. Are
they “blown” out because they were overdriven with poor adjustments? You can go to Eminent
Technology’s Multimedia Speaker Test web site and test the response of your speakers at different
frequencies. www.eminent-tech.com/music/multimediatest.html
These tests will help you confirm whether your speakers can still handle all of the
frequencies they are designed to handle. Note any speaker issues you discovered:
A. No issues found.

Step 2:
Inspect the optical drive. Look at the front of the drive. Do you see a tiny hole near the
edge of the tray door?
A. Yes
You can straighten out a paperclip and push it into this hole to release the tray. This is
handy in case you accidentally leave a disc in the drive when you remove it from the system. Go
ahead and push a straightened out paper clip into the hold to eject the tray.
Look at the back of the drive. You should see several areas for connections:
The Molex or SATA power connection
The connection for the PATA or SATA cable
An audio connection for a cable to the sound card
Jumper settings: master, slave, and cable select (PATA only)
Step 3:
Reinstall the optical drive into your system. It can be a master drive or a slave drive, depending on
what other PATA devices are installed.
Now answer the following questions:
Did you fasten the drive using the correct screws?
o Yes
Is the master/slave jumper set correctly?
o Yes
Is the PATA/SATA cable connected properly?
o Yes
Is the power plug fully inserted?
o Yes
Is the audio cable connected to the drive?
o Yes
