PREFACE

First of all, I feel like saying “thanks” for God’s love and grace for us. Thanks to
God for helping me and give me chance to finish this assignment timely. And I would like
to say “Thank you” to Mam FADHILAH ARFA HASIBUAN, S.Pd.I, M.HUM, as the
lecture that always teaches me and give much knowledge about how to practice English
well.

This assignment is the one of English task that composed of critical book review. I
realized this assignment is not perfect. But I hope that it can be useful for us. Critics and
suggestion are needed here to make this assignment be better. Hopefully, I as a student in
State Islamic University of North Sumatera can work more professional by using English
as the second language whatever we done. Thank you.

PRELIMINARY

A. Background

Grammar is a collection of rules about the grammatical structure of language.


This collection of rules is commonly known as grammar. In English, grammar consists of 8
parts (commonly called part of speech). In grammar there’s consists 8 parts, and that will
be discussed in this critical book review there are only 3. There are Auxiliary Verb,
Adverbs and Adverb Phrases, and Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases.
Critical review is not just a report or article about the contents of a book or
article, but rather focuses on our evaluation (explanation, interpretation and analysis) about
the strengths & weaknesses of the book or article, what is interesting about the article, how
the contents of the article can affect the way our thinking & increase our understanding of
a particular field of study. In other words, through critical review we test the mind of the
author / writer based on our perspective based on the knowledge & experience we have.
The purpose of giving a lecture in the form of a critical review is to develop a culture of
reading, think systematically & critically, and express opinions.
Often we are confused about choosing reference books for us to read and
understand.sometimes we choose one book,but it doesen’t satisfy our book,but it doesen’t
satisfy our hearts.for example in terms of the information contained therein.
Therefor,the writer reads this Critical Book Review to make it easier for readers to
choose reference books.Basides that,one of the factors underlying the author’s review of
this critically and know the advantages of a book.

Critical review we test the mind of the author / writer based on our perspective
based on the knowledge & experience we have. The purpose of giving a lecture in the
form of a critical review is to develop a culture of reading, think systematically &
critically, and express opinions.
Benefits of Writing a Critical Book Review

1. To fulfill one of the learning evaluation subject assignments.


2. To increase the knowledge of readers.
3. Make it easy for readers to understand the contents of the book.
4. Add author’s insight.
5. Train the writer to think critically.

The Purpose of Writing a Critical Book Review


1. Review the contents of a book
2. Finding and knowing the information contained in the book
3. Train yourself to think critically in finding information provided by each chapter of
the first book and the second book
4. Comparing the contents of the first book and the second book
5. Review the contents of a book.
6. Looking for and know the information contained in the book.
7. Train yourself to think critically and look for the information given by each chapter
of the book.

CHAPTER II
SUMMARY OF CONTENT

A. Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary or helping verbs are used before infinitives to add a different meaning.
For example, you use auxiliary verbs to say:

 That someone is able to do something


 That someone is allowed to do something, or
 That someone has to do something

The helping verbs are can, could, would, should, ought to, will, shall. May, might
and must.

1. Can and Could

Use can and could to say that someone is able to do something.


For the example:

 She can draw really good pictures


 Can you ride?
 She could already read before she started school.
 Sarah could not come to the party because she was ill

You may also use can and could to say thet someone is allowed to do something.
For the example:

 My mom says you can come to our house.


 Mom said I could have ice cream after my dinner.
 The big sign on the gate said private, so we couldn’t go in.

2. Will and Would

Use will and would when you are asking someone to do something.
For the example:

 Will you please stop making that noise?
 Would you pass me that book

3. Shall and Should

You can use shall and should to ask for advice, offer something and suggest something.
For example:

 Should I bring waterproof clothes?


 Shal I go by car, or will it be better to walk?

4. Verb Phrases

A verb phrases consist of a verb and a preposition such as after, into and over. The
preposition gives the verb a special meaning.
For the example:

 Who looks after ( = takes care of) the baby when your parents are at work.
 Da bumped into ( = met by chance) an old friend at the station.

B. Adverbs and Adverb Phrases

Adverbs are words that tell you more about verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.
Many adverbs end in “ly”. You make these adverbs by adding “ly” to adjectives.
For the example:

 She writes neatly.


 The traffic was moving slowly.
 They woved goodbye sadly.

Adverb phrases are groups of words that functions as single adverbs to describe the
action of the verb.
Kinds of adverbs are:

1. Adverbs of Manner

Some adverbs and adverb phrases describe the way people do things.

For the example:

 The girls answered all the question correctly.


 He was driving carelessly.
 The plane landed safely.

2. Adverbs of Time

Some adverbs and adverb of phrases answer the question “when?” they are called
adverbs of time.
For the example:

 I’m going to my new school tomorrow.


 It rained heavily last night.

3. Adverbs of Place

Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “where?” they are called
adverbs of place.
For the example:

 It’s very sunny but cold outside.


 That’s our ball there.
 The dog is in the garden.

4. Adverbs of Frequency

Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “how often?” they are called
adverbs of frequency.

For the example:

 Katy practices the piano regularly.


 The children always go to school on the bus.

5. Adverbs of Duration

Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “how long?” they are called
adverbs of duration.
For the example:

 The library is temporarily closed.


 The snow lasted for three days.

6. Adverbs of Emphais

Some adverbs also describe adjectives or other adverbs. They are usually used to
add emphaises.
For the example:

 Anna can run really fast.


 My rice is too hot.

C. Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases

Prepositions are words that show a connection between other words. Most
prepositions are little words like at, in amd on. Prepositional Phrases are groups of
words, such as out of and on top of.
Kinds of Preositions are:

1. Prepositions of Place

Show where something happens.


For the example:

 There’s a wooden floor underneath the carpet.


 Sally was sitting under the tree.
 Some geese flew over their house.
 There was a tree beside the river.
 A big truck parked in front of their car.

2. Prepositions of Time.

Show when something happens.


For the example:

 School starts at nine o’clock.


 We’re going to the zoo on Saurday.
 No, you can’t watch a video. It’s past your bedtime already.
 You must finish the work by Friday.
 I’ll do my homework before dinner.

3. Prepositions of Direction

Show where something is going.


For the example:

 The boys chased after each other.


 The football rolled down the hill.
 This road leads away from the stadium.

4. Prepositions with Special Uses

Many prepositions are used in other ways. The prepositions are of, for, with,
except and instead of, like, as and than.

ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION

A. Strengths

Strengths of the book are:

1. Each chapter has footnotes that can clarify the material.


2. There’s chapter has some picture that interesting. So that it can illustrate for the
readers.
3. The book has many verb in the last page. There are regular verb and irregular verb.
So that, readers can add knowledge about all of verbs are there.
4. The book has a lot of practice questions in each chapter.
5. The book has crossword puzzle that very interesting for the readers.
6. The words that important are bold so that clear up the material are there.
7. Material in the book also equipped with tables so that clear up tha material too.

B. Weakness
Weakness of the book are:
1. The book hasn’t preface.
2. The book hasn’t completed bibliographic.
3. Cover and Title of the book isn’t suitable.
4. Table of content from the book isn’t tidy. But can still read by the readers.
5. The book hasn’t reference.
6. The book hasn’t pattern for tenses.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

Grammar is a very old field of study. Grammar is the way we arrange words to
make proper sentences. Some grammatical terms may be familiar to you, but others
can be confusing or hard to remember.

After I read this book, I know the complete distribution of grammar. Also in the
book also contains a lot of practice questions so that it can help me in practicing my
grammar. Lesson by lesson, this book provides basic instruction in the sight parts
of grammar.

B. Suggestion

I hope the next book can be better, in the terms of cover or contents. Clear in
writing the preface and listing the contents and the bibliographic information is
clearly written.
