Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Journey North is another case of an online project. This site enables learners to follow a
creature relocation and regular changes. The students get to contrast their information and
information from other students everywhere throughout the world. What makes this an online
project is the site teams up with the two researchers and with other schools.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will start by Introducing Journey North to the class by viewing the slideshow together. I will
build excitement and interest by asking students to describe their favorite seasonal changes.I
will then choose a bulletin board or wall that can be used to display large calendars, maps,
and other exhibit items. We will observe this "blank canvas" and ask,

"How can our class and/or school showcase the seasonal changes we are tracking locally and
globally?"

I will have students envision how the space can be used to document and display local and
global observations/data for the topic. We will be studying sunlight, plants, and animal
migrations and how they make up our seasons. I will encourage students to sketch ideas on
paper and discuss how they can work collaboratively to construct and maintain an interactive
exhibit to showcase ongoing observations and data. I want my students to "THINK BIG" as
they brainstorm about how to include a wide array of items in the Seasons Showcase:

maps
calendars
timelines
charts and graphs
technology resources
natural artifacts
photos and videos
student work (writing/drawing)

Using Journey North throughout the School year we will add to our Seasons Study board and
track our weather season along with other places around the world. This will allow the
students to work with researchers from the page, then send in their collected data. We will
learn that seasons are more than leaves changing and temperature change. We will cover
how the sun's positioning affects what season we are in, how the animals migrate to different
places to survive, how plants are affected by the change in weather, and the change in
weather itself ( precipitation, temperature, etc).
