Stakeholder Definition of their role, and how they provide support to


individuals on the spectrum

Parent or Guardian Parents and guardians of individuals on the spectrum can be


biological, step parents, foster parents or another relative who
has educational rights for that student. They provide important
background and historical information to other service providers.
They know the individuals strengths and weaknesses and
advocate for the individual. They are essential in providing “wrap
around” supports and services in the home for continuity. They
work with other support providers to ensure the correct
interventions and supports are in place for the individual.

Special Education The Special Education teacher is an expert in specially designed


Teacher instruction, accommodations, modifications to help support
students access to curriculum and instruction. The special
education teacher assess students to obtain baseline information
as well as monitor student progress and adjusts instruction and
supports as needed. Often the special education teacher writes,
implements and manages the student’s Individual Education Plan.
They can provide direct services to individuals or collaborative
and consultative support for the general education teacher, and/or
other support providers.

General Education The General Education Teacher is curriculum and instruction


Teacher expert who supports and teachers individuals on the spectrum in
the general education setting. They are responsible to teach the
core curriculum and per the IEP accommodate or modify
instruction. They work with the special education teacher and/or
other support providers to ensure access to the general education
curriculum and peers.

Administrator The administrator can by the Principal, Assistant Principal,


Counselor or other administrative personnel who has knowledge
about the general education curriculum and other resources,
supports and events available. They are typically supervise and
support general education and special education teachers.

School Psychologist The School Psychologist is trained and certified to administer a


variety of assessments and evaluations for eligibility for Special
Education services. They are an essential part of the
multidisciplinary team for individuals on the spectrum.
Additionally, they create and develop positive behavior
intervention plans, may provide direct support or intervention in
social skills, executive functioning or other social-emotional
supports. Additionally, based on evaluations, data and
observations of individuals with ASD may recommend other
supports and services.

Speech-Language The Speech and Language pathologist supports individuals on


Pathologist the spectrum who may need support in communication, language
and/or speech. They conduct standardized evaluations and based
on areas of deficit offer supports and services which may include
any or all of the following: Speech (Articulation, Fluency, Prosody)
and Language( syntax, semantics, pragmatics, expressive
language, receptive language).

Occupational Therapist Occupational Therapists are support and work with individual
functionally participate in activities of daily living. They conduct
evaluations and provide services to support gross motor functions
( walking, running, climbing), fine motor function ( hand writing,
dressing, feeding), Visual Motor (coloring and catching objects),
Sensory Integration ( ability to take in sort out and respond to
sensory information), Motor planning (riding a bike, kicking a ball)
and Neuromotor skills ( posture muscle tone and strength).

Board Certified Behavior A Board Certified Behavior Analyst is a trained and certified
Analyst individual in the area of Behavior. They evaluate and assess
individuals on the spectrum, as well as provide direction
instruction and interventions. Additionally they, consult, train, and
supervise teachers, parents and other support providers in the
area of behavior, typically positive behavior intervention strategies
and applied behavior analysis.

Physical Therapist Physical Therapists assess, evaluate and support individuals on


the spectrum who may have difficulties or deficits with strength,
stamina, coordination, and functional mobility. They support
access to environments such as playgrounds, classroom
environments ( work spaces, chairs, stairs) and facilitate
independent navigation of various environments.

Paraprofessional Paraprofessionals provide support and instruction to teachers and


individuals across settings. Typically supervised and guided by
teachers ( special education and general education) and
administrators paraprofessionals work with individuals on the
spectrum both individually and as part of group activities.
Paraprofessionals can provide specially designed instruction (
when trained), may modify or accommodate work and provide
and implement positive behavior support systems. They often
spend a lot of time with individuals and know many of the
strengths and difficulties the student demonstrates.

Vocational Specialist Vocational specialists typically support students in postsecondary


education. They have expertise in career development and help
students prepare to be independent once they leave the
structured school setting. They support students in integrating into
their communities, work environments and post secondary
educational environments.

Adapted Physical Adapted physical education (APE) teachers are trained PE


Education Teacher teachers that evaluate and assess individuals for physical fitness,
play, recreation, leisure, and sports skills​.​ They support
individuals on the spectrum by adapting PE instruction and
activities to support delays in gross motor development. They
implement and monitor specifically designed physical education
programs.

Pediatrician A pediatrician is a doctor that works with infants, children and


adolescents.Specifically for individuals on the spectrum a
pediatrician screens for Autism, as well as coordinates support
and resources for families. They may also support with medicine
recommendations and management based on need.

Nutritionist A nutritionist is a specialist whose expertise is food, diet and


health. They can support individuals on the spectrum address
issues and/or concerns with nutrition, as well as feeding issues
that may include restrictive food preferences, sensory issues with
food, and developing good food habits.

Social Worker A Social Worker supports and works with ​ individuals, families, 
groups and communities to improve social functioning and overall 
well-being. They can support individuals on the spectrum by 
providing or recommending services such as social skills, counseling 
( individuals and/or family), transition planning and job training or 
placement.
