Chapter 2: Know Yourself to Market Yourself

List the five high-rated items that you feel best describe you.

Five of the items that best describe me are: realistic, takes initiative, ability to multitask, willing to
take on new assignments, and punctual.

Describe five examples of how you have used or demonstrated some of these high-
rated qualities and traits in the past.

1. The job I have now, I work in the office. Just recently, my boss asked me if I wanted
to come work in the field. I practically jumped up and down. – taking on new
assignments
2. A website needed to be made so I created a website for the company I work for
without being told to do so. – taking initiative
3. I live an hour away from church and my roommates don’t care about punctuality,
so I always leave earlier than them to get to church on time. – punctual
4. Out in the field, I drive equipment. This requires serious focus. I was dumping a pile
of brush out of a dump truck while having to drive at the same time. – ability to
multitask
5. I want to go to Alaska for my friend’s wedding but I simply can’t afford it with my
trip to Europe coming up. -realistic

For each of your top five high-rated items, describe why an employer might want to hire
a person with this quality or trait.

A realistic person is able to reach goals, within budget, get things done without making
false promises, and gives the employer what they need to hear rather than what they want
to hear for the sake of the company.
Someone who take initiative is valuable because the employer doesn’t constantly have to
give instructions. They see what needs to be done, so they do it.
Multitasking can save time, therefore, save money for the employer.
Willingness to take on new assignments helps everyone. Jobs and tasks can change; the
employee should be able to adapt to these changes.
It is key that an employer can count on the employee to be on time. The employee should
arrive on time to work, meetings, and complete tasks on time so the employer know they
can count on them.
