Dear Dr.

Novak:

In my portfolio I have incorporated three pieces of text, written throughout this semester,
demonstrating how I have successfully achieved all four student learning objectives (SLO’s)
presented in this English 101 course. To specify even more so I chose to use and revise my
narrative letter, our first writing project of this semester, because I can now confidently
implement various lessons we have been taught. The other two pieces of minor text I have
decided to include a summary written for a daily writing assignment and a peer commenting
workshop, both will further aid me proving I have fulfilled the requirements of the student
learning objectives.

To begin I want to show you just exactly how my narrative letter successfully shows two of the
four SLO’s being implemented into this piece. First is SLO #1, being able to not only understand
but apply the key rhetorical concepts to this written assignment. This is shown in my essay by
following the prompt, writing a letter of advice to a highschool freshman in regards to financial
literacy, showing that I understood not only the writers role, as a mentor, but the purpose of
writing such a letter can aid the intended audience in furthering their education. I was also sure
to include the context of why college can be a financial scare due to the fact of how expensive it
is and how being first generation college student only adds to that anxiety, cultural context. The
other objective that is intertwined in the revised writing project is SLO #4, the ability to conform
to the genre which was a narrative and personal paper while also applying a personal voice
throughout. I not only revised this paper by looking over the prompt once more but by making
sure it felt as if the audience and I were just chatting over some coffee. Lastly I chose 2 minor
texts to aid my argument. I wanted variety so I chose a daily writing assignment that helps
exemplify that I did achieve SLO #2, which was being able to analyze and evaluate text. In this
writing assignment I wrote a summary about an article and discuss how the material written was
to be digested. Next I used a peer review workshop to demonstrate my usage of SLO #3, which
allowed me to participate in the step of reviewing my peers work allowing them to revise. I
commented on Ryan’s paper, answering specific questions to help make aid him in revising his
final draft.

In conclusion, I believe that all three of these writing pieces act as concrete evidence on how I
have and successfully implemented the four student learning objectives in my portfolio. Thus
deserving of the decision that I am competent in using all four objectives.Thank you for your
