ASSP Kuwait Chapter Launches “10th international
Health Safety Security , Environment & Loss Prevention
Professional Development Conference & Exhibition
2019”

American Society of Safety Professionals – Kuwait Chapter (ASSP) an ISO 9001


certified, non profit organization, conducted the Conference Curtain Raiser
event of its 10th International HSSE Professional Development Conference & Ex-
hibition at Hotel Regency on 20th October 2019.

The 10th International Health Safety Security, Environ-


ment & Loss Prevention Professional Development
Conference & Exhibition will be organised from 17th
to 18th December 2019, Hotel Regency, Kuwait, with
a Theme ‘ HSSE Excellence for Sustainable Business
’. The two days mega event will feature interactive
Plenary Sessions, Executive Panel Discussion with Top
management of the industries, Technical Sessions,
Exciting Keynote Speakers, Exclusive Women in Safe-
ty Excellence ( WISE), Exclusive Sessions for University
Students, World Class Training workshops, Symposi-
ums on key HSSE issues and a dynamic Trade Show
exhibition.
This HSSE conference is designed to be one of the largest of its kind in the region. The conference is
patronized by H.E. Dr. Khaled Al-Fadhel, Minister of Oil & Minister of Electricity & Water, State of Ku-
wait, endorsed by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation.

The conference is also supported by many International agencies like International Association
of Drilling Contractors (IADC), Board of Certified Professional (BCSP), Institution of Occupational
Safety and Health UK (IOSH), Board for Global EHS Credentialing® ABIH-IPEP, ASSP International
Practice Specialty, Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), World Safety Council (WSC) and Inter-
national Powered Access Federation (IPAF). The Gulf Downstream Association (GDA) for the first
time has accepted to be the Knowledge Partner of the conference.

The curtain raiser event was kicked off with an opening remarks by Mr. Mazharuddin Shaik, Sec-
retary, ASSP Kuwait Chapter . It was followed by the welcome address by Eng. Fadhel Al Ali,
Chairman ASSP Kuwait Chapter. Mr. Faris Al Mansouri delivered the director address where he
outlined the emphasized the importance and encouraged the organization to participate in it.
The addresses were followed by a brief presentation on the Conference by Mr. Ahmed Ismael,
Head Conference Strategy. The presentation featured ASSP past conferences in Kuwait , benefits
to Kuwait Society and Industries, theme & objective of the conference, benefits of attending the
conference, the driving force of the conference and the expectations from the industry leaders.

Mr. Golamari Sampath Reddy, Conference Deputy Director delivered the conference technical highlights, including de-
tails about Technical sessions, Key International & Regional Speakers, pre & post conference training workshops, expert
panelists for the Executive Panel Discussion, Women in Safety Excellence (WISE) session & exclusive University Students
Session. The presentations were followed by Guest Addresses by Mr. Abdulaziz Ahmed Al-Duaij, Deputy C.E.O , Support
Services, KNPC , Mr. Nasser Al Habbab, TL, Fire Protec & Security & Crisis Management HSSE, KPC, Mr. Hisham, Middle
East Representative, IADC and a video address by Ms. Diana Stegall, President, ASSP, USA.

American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) - Kuwait Chapter is a premier voluntary, non-profit making Health,
Safety and Environmental organization, which strives to provide professional guidance, training, consultancy and re-
sources to the industrial and social sectors in the region.

As per the annual plan, ASSP-Kuwait Chapter organized its 4th Technical meet for the term 2019-2020 on Process Safety
Management and Inherently Safer Plants among the industry. It is A systematic approach to loss prevention and the
hierarchy of controls.” The session was conducted at Best Western Hotel Hall, Mahboula, on 24th October 2019.

The Technical Meet sharply started at 7:00 PM with the opening remarks by Mr. Safdar Ali Khan - Treasure of ASSP
Kuwait Chapter, He welcomed the participants and appreciated their participation in the technical meet, Mr. Mustak
Mirza - Head of HSE Events Committee briefed about the importance of technical meets and introduced the speaker for
the day Mr. Leonardo Cotrufo, Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim Deputy Head of HSE Event Committee communicated with
audience for signing the attendance sheet as compliance with ISO 9001 record keeping.

The speaker for the Technical Meet Mr. Leonardo Cotrufo has Twenty years comprising experience in oil & gas engi-
neering and construction including process Safety. He has been working in Kuwait since January 2012 as Lead HSE En-
gineer and Loss Prevention Specialist. He has an extensive background in Safety Management System and Process Safety,
including Quantitative and Qualitative Risk Assessment. He completed his degree in Mechanical engineering and Safety
and Health in workplaces Master at Bari Polytechnic in Italy. He has command over Occupational Health and Safety
Management System as Lead Auditor.

Mr. Leonardo Cotrufo briefly described process safety management, employee participation, process safety information,
process safety framework including its important major elements. He also presented inherently safe design, Process Haz-
ards Analysis and few case studies such as fire, explosion, and toxic gas dispersion within the industry over the globe. Mr.
Leonardo Cotrufo confirms that the implementation of a Safety management system is a strategic and operational deci-
sion for an organization. The success of the management system depends on leadership, commitment, and participation
from all levels and functions of the organization. (e.g. Operating and maintenance procedures). He also stated that organ-
izations shall establish, implement and maintain a process (es) for hazard identification that is ongoing and proactive.

The session was very interactive, and members clarified their queries with the speaker. Approximate 90 ASSP Members
attended the Session, The presentation was followed by a Question and Answer session. Question and answers session
were conducted by Mr. Mirza Mustak (Head of HSE Event Committee) and the gifts were distributed to the correctly
answered members.

Special speech addressed by Mr. Ashok Garlapati on importance of ASSP and its benefits for HSE Professionals. He
thanked newly joined members, He appreciated significant number of the attendance for the event, furthermore He Ap-
preciated ASSP Kuwait Chapter for the organization of such Event regarding the process safety.

Mr. Ramana, chapter executive secretary was invited to talk about ASSP Toastmaster club and its benefits for him. He
briefly describes his journey of ASSP toastmaster club and motivated attendees to join.

Mr.Mohammed Yousuff (Head of the Publication Committee) briefly explained about the scheduled for Pre & Post
Trainings and workshops during the upcoming 10th International Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Loss Pre-
vention Professional Development Conference and Exhibition on 17th – 18th December 2019 at Hotel Regency-Kuwait,
He encouraged ASSP Members for nomination and participation.

The Technical Meet concluded with the thanks note by Ag.President of ASSP Kuwait Chapter Mr. Jahid Thakor, he
thanked the speaker with the memento for their time and efforts in delivering the presentation towards the benefits of the
ASSP Members. The memento was handed over to the speaker by the Mr. Ashok Garlapati and He also thanked the HSE
Events committee for organizing the event.

How long have you been a member with ASSP and how did you become aware of it?

I am Adnan Yousaf HSE Engineer by Profession and part of ASSP Family since 2012 and I came to
know about ASSP via a friend here in Kuwait.

How have you benefited from ASSP over the years?

ASSP is a trusted platform for obtaining top-quality safety education and connecting with other
safety professionals among safety professionals for enhancing the knowledge, skills, continuing edu-
cation and professional networking.

Tell us about your current post in ASSP-KC?

I am currently Head of Technical Committee ASSP-KC for the term 2019-20 and got privilege to be
the Dy. Director GCC HSE Excellence Awards 2019.

What challenges do you face in achieving the Committee goals?

It’s Challenging Opportunity to create the E-Library for ASSP Members where they can login to ac-
cess various HSE Articles and Booklets to enhance their knowledge which can be fruitful for their
Professional growth and career.

From your experience, what advice do you have for new or aspiring members to maximize
their benefit from ASSP?

ASSP KC is great learning platform for Safety Professional especially in a country like Kuwait, by de-
veloping relationships with other like-minded safety professionals that can formulate into collabo-
ration to enhance knowledge by trainings & HSE technical meets, mentorships and career oppor-
tunities and specially by serving as volunteer in ASSP KC platform it polish the management and
leadership skills for the Young HSE Professionals.

ASSP Kuwait Chapter
The first chapter among ASSP Worldwide to receive
ISO 9001 Quality Management Certification

ASSP Kuwait Chapter is delighted to have been awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification, an internationally recognised
standard that ensures their products and services meet the needs of customers through an effective quality manage-
ment system.

ASSP Kuwait Chapter decision to work towards ISO 9001:2015 accreditation demonstrates their commitment to con-
tinually improving their services. To become ISO 9001:2015 compliant, the ASSP Kuwait Chapter team who are based
in the state of Kuwait, underwent an extensive audit that measures key performance indicators like Quality manage-
ment system development, a management system documentation review, pre-audit, initial assessment, and clearance of
non-conformances.

ISO is one of the most rigorous and well-regarded standards in the world. American Society of Safety Professionals,
(ASSP) Kuwait Chapter were audited by TUV Nord and were presented with their certificate in September 2019.

The ASSP Kuwait Chapter is a non-profit organisation established in the year 2000. Since then it is engaged in the
promotion of Health Safety and Environment in state of Kuwait by conducting the training, technical meets, HSE
campaigns, recognition of the HSE performance of Private sector organisation through GCC HSE excellence award
program and Professional Development Conference.

The chapter in state of kuwait is well supported & endorsed by the stakeholders namely Kuwait Petroleum Corporation
and its Subsidiaries major oil & gas companies like EQUATE and other companies.

The chapter has a membership strength of more than 1000 comprising of diversified HSE professionals from Down-
stream and Upstream industries. The ASSP Kuwait Chapter is the first chapter among the world wide chapters of the
US based Safety organisation to achieve this quality management certification.

To mark this occasion ASSP Kuwait Chapter organised a ceremony along with Conference Curtain Raiser where key
dignitaries were invited from Oil & Gas Industries namely Mr. Abdulaziz Al Duaij, Deputy CEO, Support Services,
KNPC, Mr. Nasser Al Habbab, TL, Fire Protec & Security & Crisis Management HSSE, KPC, Mr. Hisham, Middle East
Representative, IADC Mr. Ali Failakawi, General Secretary, Kuwait Society of Engineers and other team Leaders from
K Companies.

On this occasion ASSP Kuwait Chapter Chairman Engr. Fadhel Al Ali expressed that ISO 9001 certification of the
chapter will extend quality based approach to the ASSP Kuwait chapter activities in providing support to social and
industrial sector in promoting Health Safety Environment in the state of Kuwait.

The president of the chapter Mr. Sunil Sadanandan said

“Achieving this prestigious certificate is an acknowledgement of chapter’s focus on delivering uncompromised quality,
with excellent customer service and high-quality services at legendary performance. We are very pleased that the effort
to further improve our services has been rewarded with the ISO 9001:2015 certification. Of course, this remains an on-
going process that requires day-to-day commitment and expertise from the entire chapter committees and members. In
essence, it’s all about the ability to serve the community in the best possible way and we want to give our members and
industry proof of quality with this certification.”

Speaking to the Press Mr. Mazharuddin Shaik, Secretary , ASSP Kuwait Chapter added that

ensuring quality and providing the best possible service to the industry & Community. We are dedicated to constant
improvement and development and achieving and maintaining an ISO 9001:2015 accreditation ensures we have the

The ASSP Kuwait chapter’s 10th Professional Development Conference will be held on 17th & 18th December 2019 at
Regency Kuwait hotel.

ASSP Kuwait chapter have started a Toastmasters Club known as ASSP Kuwait Toastmasters Club for their members to
develop leadership and communication skills which is essential for HSE Professionals.

ration and its subsidiaries.
