The following starting instructions are of a general nature and do not apply to any
specific aircraft: with some aircraft the sequence of operations may vary and other
checks and safety precautions may also be required. It is important always to take
careful note of the engine limitations (i.e. boost, temperatures, r.p.m., etc.) to ensure
that these limitations are not exceeded.

3.1 For engine starting or propeller feathering an external power supply should always
be available. Only in exceptional conditions should the aircraft batterics be used.
3.2 The following is a general sequence of operations for starting the engine.

3.2.1 Ensure that the ignition switches are *"OFF" and the ground/flight switch is at
"GROUND". The aircraft batteries must be installed and connected.

3.2.2 Check the position of the undercarriage selector lever, which must be down or
neutral according to the type of aircraft; also check the undercarriage warning indicator
to ensure that the undercarriage is locked down. Check that the flaps are selected "UP".

3.2.3 Wheel brakes should be ON" with sufficient pressure in the systems.

3.2.4 The supercharger control should be set to "AUTO" or "MEDIUM" static boost gauge
reading should be noted.

3.2.5 The radiator flap control should be set to "OPEN" or "AUTO" and the air intake
control to "COLD-AIR".
3.2.6 Cowling gills and oil-cooler shutters should be in the closed position until the
required temperatures have been reached, when they should be opened.

3.2.7 Oil and fuel cocks should be turned "ON"; fuel booster pumps should be swItched
“ON" and the pressure checked.

3.2.8 The propeller control lever should be set in the fine pitch position and the friction
damper mechanisms checked for correct "FEEL".

3.2.9 The throttle control lever should be set at the starting position and suitably friction-
damped to prevent the lever “wandering" when the engine is running.

3.2.10 The engine should be primed with according to the manufacturer's instructions.
reference temperature and to ambient.
