Synthetic Fluid Workflow

WELLCAT Workflows

This workflow demonstrates how to link PROD module temperature analysis results to CASING Module Custom Load
Stress Analysis.

1. Import the transfer file titled Wellcat C.edm.xml using File > Import > Transfer File. In a typical installation, this file
will be located in the Landmark\EDTXXX|WELLCAT\Example Files folder, where XXX is the version number of the
Engineer's Desktop™ Drilling Applications you have installed.
2. Double click on the file name when displayed in the Import dialog to open it. (You can also highlight the file name,
and then click the Open button.)
3. Click Yes on the following dialog. The displayed dialog may differ slightly from the one below if you have previously
imported this file. Importing the file again will overwrite existing data you imported using this file.

4. Using the Well Explorer, double-click on the Wellcat DSG_DW design to open it.

5. Select the Prod module by clicking the Prod button ( ) on the Product toolbar.

6. Click on the Prod tab located at the bottom of the window. Review the wellbore, fluid, and flow summary for the
Displace Completion Fluid operation while applying diesel defined as a standard mud (using the Standard Muds
Tab). We will compare these temperature results with the results when diesel is defined as a synthetic fluid (using
the Synthetic Muds Tab).

7. Select the MultiString module by clicking the MultiString button ( ) on the Product toolbar.
8. Using Results > Calculate, calculate AFE and Wellhead Movement results for the Start of Production operation.

9. Do not calculate AFE custom loads. (Click Cancel on the following dialog.)

10. Click on the MultiString tab, and review the MultiString AFE results for the Start of Production load while applying
diesel as a standard mud. Use Results > Current Load > Start of Production - 4 1/2in Production Tubing to
select the load. Later, we will compare these results to those of applying diesel as a synthetic fluid.

11. Select the Prod module by clicking the Prod button ( ) on the Product toolbar.

12. Define a synthetic mud using Inventories > Fluids > Synthetic Muds. Define a 100% diesel fluid named Diesel
(S).

a. Select Overall Mixture Properties. Click this option if the defined fluid properties represent the mixture of
solids and base fluid, or if the properties to be defined are for a mixture containing 100% base fluid.
b. Click on Apply Diesel Thermal Properties and the corresponding Thermal Conductivity and Heat Capacity
for diesel will be applied.
c. Enter the diesel pressure, temperature, and density values displayed below. Note: Pressures in the WELLCAT
software are entered and displayed as gauge pressures.

When entering this data:

 Enter the pressure value, then TAB out of the cell, or click the Enter key

 Click on the pressure cell (field) to input the corresponding temperature, rheology, and thermal
properties.

 Apply default Plastic Viscosity and Yield Point values.

d. After all pressure, temperature, rheology, and thermal properties have been entered. The approximate density
value of 7.07 ppg calculated at standard surface conditions is displayed. Click OK to save the data.

13. Click the View Density Plot button on the Inventories > Fluids > Synthetic Muds tab to check the synthetic fluid
polynomial coefficients that will be applied in MultiString AFE analysis if the fluid is defined as part of the Casing
and Tubing Configuration Spreadsheet. In previous versions, to define this fluid and coefficients properly prior to
calculating results, you would have had to edit the MultiString input file.

14. Use the Wellbore > Casing and Tubing Configuration Spreadsheet to use the Diesel (S) synthetic fluid you
created instead of the standard diesel mud used initially for the production tubing annular fluid.

15. Using the Operations > Operations dialog, change the Fluid used in the Displace Completion Fluid operation to
the synthetic fluid, Diesel (S), you created.

mk:@MSITStore:C:\Landmark\EDT_5000.1\Documentation\wellcat.chm::/Workflows/Sy... 2/23/2018

16. Calculate results using Results > Calculate.

17. Click on the Prod tab to review the results for the Displace Completion Fluid operation and compare the results to
the initial analysis using diesel fluid defined as a standard mud. (Step 6)

18. Using Operations > Operations, create a copy of the Displace Completion Fluid operation using diesel defined as
a synthetic mud. (Use the Copy Op button.) Name the duplicate operation Displace Completion Fluid (Std), and
use diesel defined as a standard mud for this operation. Click on the Details button to review the details tabs to
verify all workstring geometry, workstring + annulus data, options, and riser geometry are the same as in the
original operation. Click OK to close the dialog.

19. Calculate results using Results > Calculate. Only the most recently created operation needs to be recalculated.

20. Access Results > Multiple Operations > Fluid Temperature. Use the Data Selection dialog (right-click on the
plot and select Data Selection) to select the Displace Completion Fluid and Displace Completion Fluid (Std)
operations. Also select the Tubing/Workstring Configuration and Flow Path.

21. Comparison of applying diesel as a Standard Mud and diesel as a Synthetic Mud indicates a maximum 5%
difference in annular fluid temperature results while displacing the diesel fluid.

When using a Standard Mud, the mud density and rheological properties are entered at a specific temperature. In
this case, the WELLCAT software uses an internal function to calculate density as a function of temperature and
pressure. When using a Synthetic Mud, density and rheological properties are entered as a function of temperature
and pressure. The fluid properties cause a variance in results. It is recommended that the Synthetic Mud tab is
used, and that fluid properties are input as a function of temperature and pressure if these properties are available.
The difference in results produced using fluids defined as Synthetic Mud or Standard Mud depends on the
operation type, flow conditions, and data you enter. The difference is expected to be larger for circulation operations
(including drilling operations), than for production, or shut-in operations where annulus fluid (assuming the annulus
has synthetic mud) is stationary because of the presence of convective heat transfer in circulation operations.

22. Select the MultiString module by clicking the MultiString button ( ) on the Product toolbar.
23. Use Results > Calculate to recalculate AFE and Wellhead Movement analysis for the Start of Production operation
to investigate using diesel defined as a synthetic fluid.

24. Do not calculate AFE custom loads. (Click Cancel on the following dialog.)

25. Click on the MultiString tab, and review the MultiString AFE results for the Start of Production operation while
applying diesel as a Synthetic Mud. Use Results > Current Load > Start of Production - 4 1/2in Production
Tubing to select the load.
