Mathematics is the abstract science of numbers, quantity and space. Mathematics maybe
studied in its own right (pure mathematics) or as it is applied to other discipline such as physics
and engineering (applied mathematics). Mathematics is the study of numbers and we all know
that numbers are necessary in our lives. Studying mathematics helps us to know how to solve
simple problems which involve numbers. We study the four fundamentals of it which are
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In our daily lives we are using these
fundamentals that are why we extremely need to study mathematics.

In the subject mathematics in the modern world, there are several topics discussed to us
by our instructor, Ms Zussette Aplaon. Set which composts of any element, for example is
{a,b,c} where a,b and c is one set. There are two way on how to describe a set, the rule and the
roster method. In these ways, we can easily know and have a set. The subset is part of any given
set, for example is the set is {a,b,c} and the subset of this is a,b and c. The next topic is the
fundamental operations involving algebraic equation. There are five axioms of equality, the
reflexive law, symmetric law, transitive law, addition law of equality and the multiplication law
of equality. The other fundamental law are substitution law and cancellation law for addition.
There are also axioms for multiplication, the closure where the sum or product of two real
number is a real number, the commutative where the sum or product is not affected by the order
in which the numbers are added or multiplied, the associative where the sum or product is not
affected by the way that the numbers are grouped before adding or multiplying, the identity,
inverse and the distributive property.

Many people especially students ask their teacher why we need to study this kind of
mathematics in our life. I learned after studying these topics that in our lives we will encounter
problems involving these topics and because we studied it, we can overcome and we will have
solutions for it. I believe that I can use mathematics in the modern world in my future life
because as I said earlier, we are encountering numbers in our daily lives.

In our next topic which is about money, it catches my attention and my desire to listen
carefully because if we are talking to money, everybody listens. I learned from the lessons that
there are plenty ways when it comes on investing your money to have better benefit. We studied
the simple interest, ordinary interest, exact interest, maturity value of the final value, the present
value of a compound amount and finding the interest rate. We also studied the compound interest
which refers to the sum of interests and principal and the interest of interests it accumulates over
a period of time, the compounding which means that it is the process of finding a compound
amount when a present value is known and the compound amount which means the accumulated
value of the principal of all interest amounts of prior periods, it is also the sum of all the principal
and all compound interest.. In studying it, I learned that there are some ways on how to know the
worth of my money when I invest it with interest. These interests will help me in my future
because if I will invest money to a bank, I can choose and analyse carefully where I can have
more benefit. This topic will truly help me in my career not only now but also when I have my
own work and own money. We will not spend our money from our suffering in our work to a
nonsense thing so we need to save it and because we study the interests, we can assure that our
money is in safe hands and will also increase after several years.

In all I really believed that mathematics is very important in our lives. Many students will
say that it is only burden for them but if those students didn’t see the importance of mathematics
in their lives now, they will see it in their future because I am sure that we will use it.
Mathematics helps us not makes us suffer.
