“Annachi”, “The idly King” Mr. P. Rajagopal is the owner of Saravana Bhavan from Wiping
tables in a hotel as a servant to one of the notable billionaires in Tamil Nadu having more than

Hotel Saravana Bhavan is the largest South Indian vegetarian restaurant chain in the world,
founded in 1981 with ₹5,000 capital in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. They have more than 39

New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America.

P. Rajagopal opened a tiny grocery shop on the outskirts of the city. In 1992, Rajagopal on

By the 1990s, the Saravana Bhavan chain spread throughout neighbourhoods in Chennai. In
2000, Saravana Bhavan opened its first branch outside India, opening a franchise in Dubai, with
a large number of Indian expatriates. It eventually expanded to Paris, Frankfurt, London, New
York City, Dallas, Toronto, Stockholm, Doha and Auckland. While the restaurants gained
popularity among non-Indians, they mostly target the South Asian expatriate population. They

Nalli Kuppusami Chetti, a famous industrialist from Kancheepuram inherited his family

Nalli was established in T. Nagar in 1928 by Nalli Chinnasamy Chetti, a weaver who
belonged to the Padmasaliyar community. Chinnasamy Chetti was a famous weaver of
Kanchipuram sarees who had been weaving silk sarees since 1900 and gifted a Kanchipuram
saree, the Durbar Pet, as a souvenir to George V during his visit to India in 1911.

In 1928, he moved to the then Madras city and became one of the first to open a shop in the
neighbourhood of T. Nagar which was founded in the early 1920s. The shop initially functioned
from a house until Nalli established his own showroom in 1935. Nalli Chinnasamy Chetti died in
1958 and was succeeded by his grandson Nalli Kuppusamy Chetti.

Mr. K. M. Mammen Mappillai is the founder of MRF, the largest manufacturer of tyres in
India. He started from manufacturing toy balloons to nylon tyres. MRF became the first Indian
company to export tyres to USA.

MRF built its first Formula 3 car in 1997.MRF in collaboration with Maruti established
the Formula Maruti racing, a single-seater, open wheel class motorsport racing event for race

series organized by Madras Motor Sports Club in association with MRF.

The latest season consisted of races organized at Madras Motor Racing Track,
Chennai, Bahrain International Circuit, Losail International Circuit, Doha and Buddh
International Circuit, Noida. Freddie Hunt, son of 1976 Formula One champion James
Hunt and Mathias Lauda, son of 1975, 1977 and 1984 Formula One champion Niki Lauda both
competed in the series. MRF has sponsored Indian racing drivers including Narain
Karthikeyan, Karun Chandok, Ashwin Sundar, N. Leelakrishnan and Raj Bharath.

Mr. T. V. Sundram Iyengar started his career as a lawyer, and then moved to work for Indian
railways and later in a bank. He started bus service in Madurai which later diversified into
automobile production and emerged as TVS Group.

Sundaram Clayton was founded in 1972 in collaboration with Clayton Dewandre Holdings,
United Kingdom. It manufactured brakes, exhausts, compressors and various other automotive
