The President,
Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria,
22, Addis Ababa Crescent Wuse Zone 4,
Wuse, Abuja.
Dear Sir,

RE: THE ENGINEERING FAMILY – COREN.

The entire Executives and members of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering
(NATE), Lagos Branch hereby write to express our displeasure over several issues bothering the
perceived undermining of the actual roles of Engineering in Nigeria by COREN, some of which are:

i. The recent proclamation by COREN on the issue of HND + PGD + MSc. to join the
Engineering Cadre.
This to us is a violation of Section 8 (3) of COREN Act as amended and it is not acceptable to us as
a Body or else, Act would need be amended again if this must hold.

ii. Recent letter sent by COREN Registrar to Universities on the issue of Top- up programme.
We believe it is not the duty of COREN to dictate what Engineering program the University can run
but that of NUC even though COREN accredit such programs. We however see COREN not
wanting to appreciate the NUC to improve the academic capacity of all Engineering families as it
obtainable in other climes. This decision of COREN is to deliberately weaken the Polytechnic
engineering system in Nigeria unlike other Polytechnic programmes in other climes who are doing
well and their Professional body running effectively.

iii. COREN's deliberate intention to humiliate and undermine the technologists – NATE, in the total
scheme of engineering roles in Nigeria.
We are aware that the Washington accord which is an agreement between selected governing
bodies (COREN in the case for Nigeria), around the World that provide engineering degree
accreditation. It provides assurance that if your engineering degree is awarded by one of its
members, your degree is then recognized by all other members in the Washington Accord. Jan 27,
2018.
And we are also aware of the Sydney Accord which is committed to development and recognition
of good practice in engineering education. The Sydney Accord is specifically focused on academic
programmes dealing with engineering technology. The Accord acknowledges that accreditation of
these academic programmes is a key foundation for the practice of engineering technology in each
of the countries or territories covered by the Accord.
It recognizes the importance of the roles engineering technologists as part of a wider engineering
team. Even though the term engineering technologist is used throughout, it is mindful that these are
often termed differently within the specific jurisdictions. It also includes roles such as; certified or
applied science technologists, which may also be called associate or incorporated engineers.
Having these understanding about the *Sydney and Washington accord, COREN should know
that what is good for one is also good for others, if COREN can sign the Washington accord, she
MUST also sign the Sydney Accord even sign also, the Dublin Accord like the UK Engineering
Council who is part of all 3 Accords, that is;
 Professional Engineer – Washington Accord
 Engineering Technologist – Sydney Accord
 Engineering Associate – Dublin Accord

In conclusion, we believe that COREN is biased in these regards and we would like to add that the
good gesture we have been enjoying from the past COREN President and Registrar is no longer in
place. We therefore implore you, Mr. President, to use your good office in ensuring the betterment
of the Technological advancement in our nation and the original intention of COREN for a balance
playing ground for the Engineering family at large because we are proud of being Technologists
and this is who we are.

Thank you for your understanding.

Long Live Engineers

Long Live Technologists
Long Live Technicians
Long Live COREN
