It was one fine day when I decided to sit beside our window, enjoy the view and randomly

think

about anything that happened in my life. I realized how time flies so fast when 23 years ago, I was just a

small premature baby weighing only 4.8 lbs. and that now I weigh 25 times more. I know you can picture

out the difference? Yes, the proof is here, it’s undeniable. Well, it was on the same day, when an old

towering tree caught my attention. And as I stared to admire the said tree, I came to, an obvious but not

often thought, realization that this very tall, mighty tree was once started out as a small tiny seed.

Why am I talking about these things? What’s with the seed and a tree? Why am I talking about

nature when I am asked to tackle on how mighty at 80 our company, National Power Corporation is? Am

I making any sense here or am I just giving you headaches?

Contest chair, Ladies and Gentlemen and anyone who has been confused and those who have

been wondering what I am talking about… “From tiny seeds grow mighty trees” ~ Allow me to use this

analogy as we look back at the history of how NPC started and where we are today. Let’s recall our

journey from the company’s humble beginnings to being mighty or even the mightiest at present.

It all began with the seed of idea to electrify the whole Philippine archipelago through the

utilization of the country’s hydropower resources to improve the quality of lives of the Filipino people. The

very same seed was planted which brought forth the creation of National Power Corporation, 8 decades

ago.

NPC had to go through lots of dirt before fully establishing its roots and grow into a tree. From

the revisions of its charter to the economic, political, and environmental influences, NPC managed to

adapt, grow and develop from a small organization to one of the country’s largest.

From the creation of NPC up to late 1980’s, National Power Corporation became the major player

in the power industry. It had control over the generation and transmission of power in the country.

However, like a tree that needs pruning and trimming to improve its health, NPC had undergone

structural reforms through the EPIRA Law to focus on performing its missionary electrification functions

and manage its watershed and dam operations.

Like trees blossom and wither as seasons change throughout the year, NPC had gone through a

natural cycle of ups and down. From prolonged brownouts to fuel and power efficiency, from budget

shortfall to budget sufficiency, from small and/or complicated challenges to great achievements, NPC

stands strong in the constantly changing world and resilient to the challenges of time. And that is

because of its strong foundation rooted in uplifting the quality of life of the Filipinos.

and structural reforms and but had retained its firm mission and vision to perform the missionary

electrification functions through the SPUG – Small Power Utilities in providing reliable electricity in far

flung islands and isolated grids that are not connected with the main transmission system; to manage its

watershed and dam resources; and to adopt to innovative power technologies and business processes to

respond to the needs of its customers. These gave NPC a strong foundation keeping it standing in storms

and resilient to the challenges of time.

(cite problems... and solutions)

Through the years, NPC experienced growth and had provided better service through the Filipino

people. Better service means lesser blackouts, higher dependable capacities, greater areas with electricity

and more satisfied customers. But this wouldn’t be possible without those people who have been a part

of its trunk who selflessly gave their effort and time to work and contribute to the betterment of the

company – and that is you, you and you. For some they might have spent more than half of their lives

working in this company, and some may be here in just a couple of months or years but nonetheless,
