DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH


( Kalimat Langsung dan Tidak Langsung )
Introduction :

Dalam kontek komunikasi (lisan/tulisan) suatu pembicaraan baik yang berbentuk


pernyataan/pertanyaan/perintah/larang) dapat disampaikan dalam dua cara yang
berbeda, yakni secara : langsung (Direct Speech) dan tidak langsung ( Indirect Speech)

Let’s discuss this case more understandably :

Example : Selvi says : “ I want to be a professional nurse “


(This is Direct Speech)
What did Selvi say ? :
Selvi said that she wanted to be a professional nurse.
(This is Indirect Speech or Reported Speech)

∎ Direct Speech :

My name is Endah Juniastri .


Endah said :
⦁ “I am a student nurse.”
⦁ “I study at the Nursing Academy of Cianjur.”
⦁ “I will finish my study next year.”
⦁ “I must be a professional nurse.”
⦁ “I discussed a lecture activity last week.”

∎ Indirect Speech :

What did Endah say ?


⦁ She said that she was a student nurse.
⦁ She said that she studied at Nursing Academy of Cianjur.
⦁ She said that she would finish her study the following year.
⦁ She said that she had to be a professional nurse.
⦁ She said that she had discussed a lecture activity the week before.

Conclusion :

Indirect Speech adalah kalimat yang diucapkan untuk melaporkan kata-


kata/kalimat si pembincara kepada orang lain (Reported Speech)

Explanation :

1. Quotation mark ( “.....” ) is omitted when writing the Indirect Speech.


2. The Personal Pronoun is change, eg. Endah becomes She and Her, etc.
3. Some other things must be known :

TYPES OF INDIRECT SPEECH


I. STATEMENT
Gunakan kata THAT (=bahwa) sebagai penghubung antara kalimat pengantar
(introductory phrase) dan kata-kata yang dilaporkan (reported word)

Kalimat pengantar dalam indirect statement :

He said
He said to me THAT + REPORTED WORDS
He told me
Study the following examples :

1. Dr. Suranto told the nurse : “ I have examined my patients. “


Dr. Suranto told the nurse that he had examined his patients.

2. My patient said : “ My chest hurts. “


My patient said that his chest hurted.

3. Father said to me : “ I am driving home now. “


Father said to me that he was driving home then.

4. The Surgeon told me : “ I must have an operation today “


The Surgeon told me that he had to have an operation that day.

5. Ms. Sally said : “ I don’t like dancing “


Ms. Sally said that she didn’t like dancing.

II. COMMAND
a. Positive Command

Dalam perintah positif kita tambahkan kata TO didepan kalimat perintahnya, sebagai
penghubung anatara kalimat pengantar dan perintah yang dilaporkan.

Kalimat pengantar yang digunakan :

He asked me
TO + INFINITIVE
He told me

Study the following examples :

1. He asked me : “ Give an infussion. “


He asked me to give an infussion.
2. He told me : “ Stop talking to Mitta. “
He told me to stop talking to Mitta.

3. Mother asked John : “ Pay attention to what I say “


Mother asked John to pay attention to what she say.

4. The lecturer asked the students : “ Be quiet while I am talking “


The lecturer asked the students to be quiet while he was talking.

b. Negative Command

Dalam perintah negative (prohibition) kita tambahkan kata NOT TO di depan


perintah yang dilaporkan.
1. The Nurse told Bento : “ Don’t bother me. “
The Nurse told Bento not to bother her.

2. Ira asked Tom : “ Don’t enter my room. “


Ira asked Tom not to enter her room.

3. Mother asked John : “ Don’t smoke too much. “


Mother asked John not to smoke much.

4. The lecturer asked the students : “ Don’t open the book. “


The lecturer asked the students not to open the book.

III. QUESTION
Bila pernyataan langsung (Direct Question) menggunakan kata-kata penanya
seperti ; Where,When,What,Who,How, etc. maka kata-kata tersebut digunakan
sebagai penghubung dalam reported speech, dan pertanyaan yang dilaporkannya
berubah menjadi bentuk positif

Kalimat pengantar yang digunakan :

He asked me where
when POSITIVE FORM
what

Study the following examples :

1. The Nurse asked me : “ What is your chief complain ?. “


The Nurse asked me what my chief complain was.

2. Dr. Nita asked Bayu : “ When did you go back from trip ?. “
Dr. Nita asked him when he had gone back from trip.
3. Mother asked me : “ Why will you go tomorrow ?. “
Mother asked me why I would go the following day.

4. The patient asked me : “ Where do you live ?. “


The patient asked me where I lived.

Bila pernyataan langsung (Direct Question) tidak menggunakan kata-kata penanya,


dan hanya merupakan pertanyaan dalam bentuk “Yes & No Question” maka kita
gunakan kata-kata : IF/ WHETHER (= jika/apakah) sebagai penghubung antara
kalimat pengantar dan pertanyaan yang dilaporkan.

Study the following examples :


1. The Nurse asked me : “ Do you live near here ?. “
The Nurse asked me if I lived near there

2. Dr. Nita asked Bayu : “ Did you go back from trip yesterday ? “
Dr. Nita asked him if he had gone back from trip the day before.

3. Mother asked me : “ Will you go tomorrow ?. “


Mother asked me if I would go the following day.

4. The patient asked me : “ Are you busy today ?. “


The patient asked me if I was busy that day.

Structure Activity :

1. Change the following sentences to the past.

1. He says that he can’t park on the street.


2. She says that we will get a ticket for parking here.
3. She says that I didn’t spell that word right.
4. They say that there isn’t anything dangerous about it.
5. She says that she has invited some neighbors to come along.
6. They say that they are going to make a picnic lunch.
7. She says that she ate dinner on the flight.
8. I say that the Surgeon is having an operation.

2. Change these sentences to the indirect speech.

1. The boy said, “ I am only eight years old. “


2. Wenndy said to me, “ I am leaving in the morning. “
3. Marry said, “ The rain will probably arrive on time. “
4. He said, “ I have to finish this report by 5 o’clock. “

bahwa sakit dan kesembuhan bukanlah semata peristiwa ilmiah belaka,
namun adanya campur tangan Tuhan Allah SWT. Doa adalah salah satu
bentuk effort.

Dr. Alexis Carrel (1873-1941), seorang ahli bedah perancis peraih nobel di
bidang kedokteran.
Doa dapat memberi dampak sangat besar dalam mewujudkan harapan,
tulisan dalam bukunya. Banyak diantara mereka yang memperoleh
kesembuhan dengan jalan berdoa, itulah pengalaman2 dalam mengobati
pasiennya.
