INTEGRATED CIRCUIT (IC)

An integrated circuit (IC), sometimes called a chip or microchip, is

a semiconductor wafer on which thousands or millions of tiny
resistors, capacitors, and transistors are fabricated. An IC can
function as an amplifier, oscillator, timer, counter,
computer memory, or microprocessor. A particular IC is
categorized as either linear (analog) or digital, depending on its
intended application.

o Linear ICs have continuously variable output (theoretically

capable of attaining an infinite number of states) that
depends on the input signal level. As the term implies, the
output signal level is a linear function of the input signal
level. Ideally, when the instantaneous output is graphed
against the instantaneous input, the plot appears as a
straight line. Linear ICs are used as audio-frequency (AF)
and radio-frequency (RF) amplifiers. The operational
amplifier(op amp) is a common device in these applications.
o
o Digital ICs operate at only a few defined levels or states,
rather than over a continuous range of signal amplitudes.
These devices are used in computers, computer networks,
modems, and frequency counters. The fundamental building
blocks of digital ICs are logic gates, which work with binary
data, that is, signals that have only two different states,
called low (logic 0) and high (logic 1).

POWER MANAGEMENT IC
Power management integrated circuits (power management
ICs or PMICs or PMU as unit) are integrated circuits for power
management. Although PMIC refers to a wide range of chips (or modules
in system-on-a-chip devices), most include several DC/DC converters or
their control part. A PMIC is often included in battery-operated devices
such as mobile phones and portable media players to decrease the amount
of space required.

Flash IC

First developed in the 1980s, flash memory has become an important

technology for computers and consumer electronics. As with other kinds of
solid-state memory, it comes as integrated circuits, or ICs, each having
millions of tiny transistors on a silicon chip a few millimeters square. Flash
saves data permanently, unlike other types of memory ICs, which retain
data only as long as the power stays on.

CPU IC (PROCESSOR)
A mobile processor is found in mobile computers and cellphones.
A CPU chip is designed for portable computers. It is typically housed in a
smaller chip package, but more importantly, in order to run cooler, it uses
lower voltages than its desktop counterpart and has more sleep
mode capability. A mobile processor can be throttled down to different
power levels or sections of the chip can be turned off entirely when not in
use. Further, the clock frequency may be stepped down under low
processor loads. This stepping down conserves power and
prolongs battery life.
