ELE 403 Practicum Teaching I_ Reflection on Teaching_Evaluation Criteria

Student Teacher Name: Melike Ünal Gezer & Servet Ceylan Date: 02.12.2019

Write a very brief reflection on your first official teaching considering your lesson plan process and your teaching setting
(classroom size, students, topic you teach etc.). Critically reflect on your teaching by finding answers to the following questions:
-Short description of your teaching (teaching setting, topic you taught, class size and grade etc.)
-What was good and bad about the experience? What did you feel went well or not in your teaching? How do you know it went well?
-What sense could you make of the situation overall? What else could you have done?

PROFICIENCY LEVEL : A2 Level

STUDENTS’ AGE : 15
GRADE : 9th Class
CLASS SIZE : 30
SCHOOL : Mimar Kemal Anatolian High School

In my third internship presentation, I explained superlative and comparative to 9th grade students. The
students' level is A2 level and class size is 30 people. It was very advantageous to have a smart board that
students could use in the classroom, because when I thought about how to make it fun for children, I came up
with the idea that I could tell it indirectly to the students with a rap-song about superlative and comparative.
Since there were 30 students in the class and the width of the class was not too big, it was like a very narrow
space in the classroom. When the children spoke too loudly, my voice was not going to the back of the class
and that was a problem for me. Since I couldn't adjust the tone and volume of my voice during the lesson, I had
to make one-on-one explanation to the students sitting in the back row. When I opened the song to the students,
I witnessed that they all listened in an enjoyable way. I was very careful to choose a song that suits the level of
the children, and in this song, I gave out where the students paid more attention and tried to learn through the
worksheet. Before I opened a rap-song to the students, I thought of how to enter the topic which is superlative
and comparative in an interesting way. I showed my photos of my friends, my cousins and my grandmother to
the students on the smart board. I caught the attention of the children by comparing and superlative with the
people in these pictures and they all listened to me curiously. When I realized that even my own friends were
curiously looking at the pictures on the board, I motivated myself as if I was on the right track and this made
me very happy. All the activities I prepared were all in one concept including homework. Inspired by the
characters in the first rap-song about superlative and comparative I showed, I prepared activities for the
students according to their level. After distributing the activities to the students, I helped the students who didn't
understand by walking around the class and helping the students asking questions to understand and students try
to answer the questions. I'm very happy when students ask me questions and I feel good because they ask me
questions to learn something. When I answer their questions and tell them something, I can see the joy in all of
their eyes, and it makes me more enthusiastic to see it. Overall I would say that my teaching went well, but
since it was only the last lesson, the students were comfortable and it made it difficult for me to silence them in
class. The students in the back row talked a lot and I couldn't control the class. We continued to teach with the
front row students. I wanted to give the different students the right to speak, but most of the students were
hesitant to come on the board and write down the answers to the questions, so I couldn't insist on them. The
same students always answered the questions. I could not forcibly remove the other students, so I checked the
answers of those students during class. I even had to raise my voice several times during the class and told the
students that I was still in the class. I never wanted to shout at the students, but when Servet got feedback from
the teacher, he told me it wasn't a problem to shout at the class. And even when he said it was the best I could
do, I was relieved because I felt bad because I shouted at the students. Other than that, I had no problems or
difficulties in the class.
