It is often said that the inner strength of planets should be judged from D9 and D1 (birth chart). It is also
the chart which is used to judge if a planet has acquired Vargottam status or not.
Vargottam is a condition when a planet occupies the same Rashi or Signin both the birth chart (D1)
as well as the Navamsa Chart (D9). Vargottam planets are considered very powerful.
Have you ever wondered why is it called D9? Or have you ever wondered how complicated websites /
software construct the Navamsa Chart. If you think it is too difficult, I am going to make it very simple for
you today. This will help you in quickly making a D9 chart in the absence of any computer program or
software.
Before we begin understanding how to make the D9 chart, it is very essential that we understand
classifications of the 12 signs or rashis of the zodiac. But before that, the 12 rashis are:
CLASSIFICATION 1:
Fire Signs
Earthy Signs
Airy Signs
Watery Signs
Nav means 9
Hence, Navamsa or D9 chart is made by dividing each house of the birth chart into 9 equal divisions.
We all know that the zodiac is made up of 360 degrees and there are 12 houses in the birth chart.
And each 9th part of a house would be equal to 30 / 9 = 3 degrees & 20 minutes or simply 3°20’
PART DEGREE
RANGE
1 0 - 3°20’
2 3°20’ - 6°40’
3 6°40’ - 10°
4 10° - 13°20’
5 13°20’ - 16°40’
6 16°40’ - 20°
7 20° - 23°20’
8 23°20’ - 26°40’
9 26°40’ - 30°
We now have all tools that we need to learn how to construct the Navamsa Chart. Let us begin!
STEP 1:
STEP 2:
Determine the type of sign of the lagna rashi from the following:
Fire
Earth
Air
Water
STEP 3:
From the following table, determine the Moveable Sign or Char Rashi that is of the same element as the
Lagna Rashi is.
Note that each element has 3 signs and one among those is MANDATORILY a Moveable Sign.
In this case, the element is AIR and the moveable sign is Libra (7).
Step 4:
Note the degree of the lagna and see which part of the Navamsa Table it falls in. Note down the part
number.
In this case, Lagna Degree is 1°49’ and the associated part number is 1. This is because 0° < 1°49’ < 3°20’
Step 5:
If the sum <= 12, the Navamsa Rashi will be the Sum of Both Numbers minus 1.
If the sum > 12, the Navamsa Rashi will be Sum of Both Numbers minus 12 minus 1.
Similarly, the above 5 steps are to be repeated for all 9 grahas. For the reference of the reader, it has
been simplified in the table below.
