QUESTION BANK - 8

Subject: DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS A.Y:2012-13 Branch: III ECE Sem-II

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Explain the necessity of spread spectrum modulation. Also explain its applications.
2. Explain how Pseudo-Noise (PN) sequence is generated with an example.
3. Explain the properties of Maximal length sequences.
4. A PN sequence is generated using a feedback shift register of length 4 (i.e. 4 stages) as
shown in fig. Find the generated output sequences if the initial contents of the shift register
are 1000. If the chip rate is 107chips/sec, calculate the chip and PN sequence duration, and
period of output sequence.

5. For a linear feedback shift register with three stages (m=3), evaluate the maximum length
PN sequence for feedback taps = (3,1). Draw the schematic arrangement and verify all the
properties of PN sequence in generated output. Sketch the sequence.
6. Explain with block diagram, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technique. Also
explain about processing gain.
7. Explain the operation of Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) with the help of
block diagram and necessary waveforms.
8. Explain the difference between slow frequency hopping and fast frequency hopping.
9. Give the advantages and disadvantages of direct sequence and frequency hop spread
spectrum techniques.
10. Explain in detail about the synchronization in spread spectrum systems.
