Market Most Common Cloud Definitions
Cloud
A Cloud is a pool of compute, storage, and network resources usually housed in large globally
interconnected datacenters typically accessed over the internet.
Cloud has many different definitions, but in its most primitive form, Cloud is a delivery, consumption,
and operating model for services and/or applications.
Public Cloud
A Cloud is considered a "Public Cloud" when the services are provided over a network that is open for
public use, such as the internet.
Public Cloud services may be free. For example, your Gmail or Dropbox’s free Cloud storage accounts. A
Cloud is hosted by a Cloud Service Provider (CSP). The CSP might choose to offer some free compute
resources, services, or applications to quickly and easily allow customers to try out their offers as a
method of land and expand where customers start to pay for additional resources or elevated levels of
service. The individuals or organizations who lease or subscribe to Cloud services are known as tenants.
Tenants generally only pay for services they use in a utility billing model. For example, with energy such
as electricity or gas, you pay for what you use. The same principle applies to Public Cloud: you pay for
what you use. Another major advantage of public Cloud is the ability to automatically scale systems up
and down based on customer demands. This is why it is a preferred spot to run Customer Relationship
Management (CRM) applications, websites, and storefronts where demand may rapidly increase or
decrease.
Private Cloud
A Private Cloud is a Cloud infrastructure operated solely for a single customer; there are no other
Tenants on a Private Cloud image. A Private Cloud solution includes its installation and associated
management, sometimes in a fully managed offering where the CSP takes care of all tasks and processes
or enabling some form of self-service capabilities. The advantage of a Private Cloud over a Public Cloud
is that you can retain some control of the data and you can customize it to meet the customer needs.
Many organizations are migrating their data centers to Private Clouds to run core business applications
“in the Cloud” while retaining their custom business flows. This approach is very attractive to large
Enterprises where security, control and regulations may come into play.
Hybrid Cloud
Hybrid Cloud is a computing service that is composed of some combination of Private and Public Cloud
services. An example of a Hybrid Cloud environment could be the case where an organization may store
sensitive client data in-house on a Private Cloud application but interconnect that application to a
business intelligence application provided on a Public Cloud in a software-as-a-service scenario.
