PROCEDURE
Introduction (_10_min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: Performing art of poetry by Charlene Oka “My child”

Assessment of Prior Knowledge: What do children remember about my poem? Do you remember
the emotions in my poem? Do you remember how I expressed myself in the poem?
Body (_15_min.):

Ask students questions about what they felt, was the song sad? What did they experience with
the words of the poem. Could they imagine themes in the poem? What message was the poet
trying to send out with poetry? Today’s class is an open discussion of poetry. The open discussion
will be in a form of a circle circulating clockwise. This is a great way to have students have closure
with poem and give personal thoughts. Class discussion will continue until students are done
offering feedback and ideas.. If students are engaged and want to talk more on the poem allow
them to but if students are in deep thought get students to move back to there seats and take out
notebook to write down thoughts in the notebook you offered the students at the beginning of
unit.

Look at clock and five minutes before class ends get students to participate with sharing thoughts
in their seats.

Closure ( _1_min.):
Get students to sit in assigned seating. When done ask them questions about what they think poetry is? What are
feeling? Does poetry have ways of expressing?
