Learning astrology is going to be one of the toughest challenges in your life if you plan on doing so.
Unfortunately, there is no subject more abused in this world than astrology. There are infinite problems in
learning astrology and if I just go about making a list of those I’ll have to end up writing a book.
However, to keep it short, these are the problems you’ll have to face.
What to learn?
Well, there is western astrology and then there is vedic astrology. In Indian astrology there is the Jaimini
system, the parashara system, more than 20 nadi systems, satyachara system, prashna astrology,
muhurat astrology, mundane astrology, and what not.
How to learn?
If you learn from a book, even 20 books together wont be enough. The classical texts are too crypted for
one man to understand. The new texts are too biased and useless for their own purpose. Most of the
authors have limited knowledge, limited understanding and biased opinions which do not give practical
results. Most books are restricted to one or few methods of one of the system.
If you wish to learn from an astrologer, same problem follows. Finding a good teacher is not easy. The
best of astrologers and the most reputed ones are ones you wouldn’t even have heard of. They won’t take
you for students because other good astrologers have already booked appointments with them. What
times is left is dedicated to politicians, media houses, celebrities etc. Those who are astrologers due to
family traditions are always secretive about their family wisdom.

day and night for years before I could make sense of anything. In the morning my mom or dad would
teach me something, in the evening I wouldn’t be able to even make a simple prediction using the same.
It is very easy to learn all the rules, but to make just one concrete precise accurate prediction requires a
lot of brainstorming. The more you practice, the more fluent you get. Like the doctor, reading is one thing
and slicing the chest open to perform a surgery is altogether a different thing.
How much to learn?
There is no great example of little knowledge is a dangerous thing than astrology. In fact, my father has
never ever bothered answering a single question about me or any of his students. People would just die
asking him and he would not open his mouth unless there is something serious. Most people are
interested in astrology to be able to read their own chart. To those, I’d say, you cannot learn to perform
surgery to open up your own brains. If you know astrology, you know it for all. If you don’t, best not to try
and ruin your own or anyone else’s mental peace.
So, having said that, of course astrology can be learned and can be learned easily. However, you do need
to keep certain things in mind.
1. Never, and I mean Never, make someone your guru unless you’ve seen his predictions (accurate
ones not vague ones) come true. And I include myself as well as my family in this. Don’t just go
looking for teachers. Yoga, spirituality and astrology are best learnt from teachers who have
proven their merit to you or else you’ll suffer severe problems of the body, soul and mind. If you
just go about learning yoga from anyone, the person might break you back, same way a bad
astrologer might just offer you depression instead of knowledge.
2. Decide what you want to learn. Western astrology is more into psycho-analysis and generalized
comments. Partly why astrology has come out to be viewed as irrational is that they generalize
too much, however great books have been written for Western astrology and it can be easily
learnt. Vedic astrology is much more precise about concrete events and exact in predictions,
however it is really difficult to acquire the exact true wisdom of vedic astrology without
accumulating biases from the writers. They’re just too into fancy illogical stuff. You’ll get more
books on karma, past life, mythological stories etc. and less on the actual logic and method of
prediction. Also, most of the times in names of logic and rules would be direct copy-paste of
classical texts.
3. Understand that astrology cannot be studied in isolation. Horoscopy, mundane astrology,

prashna astrology, muhurat astrology, Vaastu, face reading, palmistry, numerology are nothing
but the same science. They are based on the very same rules and have the very same
interpretation. If you isolate them, you’re severely limiting your understanding.
4. Pick one and be thorough with it. Them move on. Horoscopy or natal astrology is the easiest. In
it, Parashara is the most logical one and loads of text are available for it. Begin with that. Then,
move on to Jaimini and then to Satyacharya. Keep

teachers either. Nadi is the most accurate with very precise and pin-pointed predictions with
almost 100% accuracy. But just to be able to learn it, you’ll have to know all others.
5. Next, go to horary or prashna astrology. It is the art of predictions based on the time of query. An
extension of it is the ability to answer and predict without knowing anything at all. Even date,
time and place of birth are not important provided the question/desire-to -know is sincere and
put forward in an unambiguous manner.
6. Move on to muhurat then.
Following are the books you can consider to begin with:
Introductory books:
1. Search for B. V. Raman and his books. They’re great works and will help you easily understand
astrology.
2. I started with Shankar Adwal’s Know about astrology. It has a very unified view of astrology as I said
earlier. It won’t help you predict anything so don’t try and impose the rules on your horoscope. But it is a
good starting point.
3. PVR Narasimha Rao’s book on astrology available on his website and Ernst Wilhelm’s videos (paid) and
books are great.
4. As someone has mentioned so I’m stressing it here. Don’t grow too fond of Kapiel Raaj the astrology
youtuber. His predictions are too generalized and vague to teach you anything and additionally if you
carefully watch his channel, with more than 1 lakh subscribers he only gets 4–8 thousand views per video
and just 100 or so likes per video. Which is too fishy a number to reflect fame. As a rule on youtube, views
outweigh subscribers based on the general human psychology of viewing but not subscribing.
Moving On:
1. Go for classical texts. Brihad Parashara Hora Shastra, Jaimini Sutras, Satya Jataka, Satya
Samhita, Hora Sara, Brihad Jataka, Sarvali, Uttarkalamrita, Laghu Parashari, Madhya Parashari,
Sanket Nidhi, Jatak Alankara, Garg hora and so on. These are what will give you means to
predict.
2. For horary, Prashna Tantra and prashna marga are the two absolute wonders. Prashna marga is
just beyond words and is worthy of being revered and worshiped.
3. While going for Nadi, you’ll find Bhrigu Nandi Nadi and Chandra Kala Nadi the most easily.
Search for books by R G Rao. It is all crypted and he has just translated most of the nadi texts
and written handbooks on how to use them. You’ll need the knowledge of astrology to make

sense of these. If you know Nadi, you’re better than 90% astrologers of the world without a

4. Practice, practice, practice. Verify rules on horoscopes. See and understand. Don’t predict unless
you’re 300% sure but begin relating the person’s nature and life events of the past with your
knowledge.
I’ve been trying for about a year to compile my father’s lectures and all classical texts into a book that can
be a one stop astrology guide for others so they do not have to undergo the torture while learning
astrology. However, it might be years or even decades before something like that is done by me or
someone else. In the mean time, keep searching.
Finally, one thing that I’d like to say to all astrology enthusiasts is, always be scared. Be afraid each
moment after you’ve learned astrologer. The very fact that you become a astrologer is a matter of pride
and arrogance and the moment you give in, is the moment you stop growing. Be afraid that every word
that leaves your mouth is going to impact someone’s life. This is the one single thing that will help you be
humble and always cross check your calculations.
Be scared of your own power, and be aware of your responsibility. If you can do it, you can even predict
the minutest details of one’s life without even looking at the horoscope. The more you try to know, the
more will be made known to you. Even a person’s walk, his handwriting, his eyelashes are enough to make
predictions, and they will always come true, so long as you have the desire to help instead of making
profit. And just as a fun fact, there is a whole book written by an ancient sage on how to predict through
your bowel movements. Just the order in which things happen in the toilet can predict your day for you.

There are 3 ways to learn astrology :
1. Go for self reading by using books and internet essays . It may take years to do that and still you
may not have any clarity . Without practical learning , confusion will prevail .
2. Go for an organised course from a University / Institute . You will get a certificate / degree but it
is no guarantee that you will become skilled in its modern application as most institutes /
universities teach classical text of astrology . You may have to intern under a practising
astrologer .
3. Be an intern under a practising astrologer.
It is also necessary to get your chart checked for learning astrology . Most of the time , such interest
happens because of short antardasha and transit periods of 2–3 years and then person loses motivation
to continue further . Unless entire Mahadasha supports such learning / practice , it is not of much use .
For those, who already have done lot of self study and still lack clarity on subject , I have started a fee

I am very surprised that no one mentioned about Rishi Bhrigu who is the Father of Vedic Astrology!!
He has written Bhrigu Samhita with Goddess Lakshmi’s inspiration (to nullify a curse on Brahmins) so
that the Brahmins will never have to worry about livelihood.
To learn astrology, 1) it should be in your stars for you to be inclined to learn and practice it 2)
Mathematics / Vedic Mathematics, 3) Study authentic vedic literature and Bhrigu Samhita should be on
top of the list, 4) If you know Sanskrit then you can benefit a lot from deeper vedic knowledge that can
only be compressed/coded in Sanskrit itself.

It is more of psychological reading.
There are many ways by which you can learn astrology from scratch like reading various books, our
Vedas, you can take many courses also for learning, you can read so many websites, can follow many
astrologers.
But I will suggest you check this site called Astrolaabh, they have so much data which is very easy to
understand and useful as per your question. You can check their website or their app called
ASTROLAABH.

It is very unfortunate that there are no books in India or even in the international arena which teach you
astrology from scratch. Most books assume that you have some basic level of understanding and try and
build up on it.
The only way you can build up your knowledge is by trying to understand each jigsaw puzzle one by one.
Everytime you get a new terminology go google search and search Wikipedia too.
You need to read a lot! A lotttt actually!
Read online and build knowledge slowly but steadily.
More importantly don't take any astrologer's views as gospel as it could be only his perspective and
needn't necessarily be the truth. You need to build your own research based data to validate the truth
about every astrology mantra.

Please follow this simple procedure to learn Vedic Astrology
1. Learn the basic concepts either through the experienced Astrologers (or) through basic
Astrology books (plenty of these books are available in the market) (or) through the People who
have clear knowledge about the Vedic Astrology
2. Clear all the biased views about Vedic Astrology from your mind that has been floating around
the society for centuries. That is, don’t build your Astrological knowledge with heresay
information (or) quotes/mis-beliefs about certain Planets/Houses given by various
authors/astrologers/books (or) proverbs on Planets/Houses.
3. Treat the Lord Shiva as your own Guru.
4. Treat your inner mind & intelligence as your guide.

it’s ok. If not, ask the question “Why?” to your inner mind.
6. Look at your Horoscope deeply; and try to find where you had gone wrong on your Predictions.

In antiquity and in renaissance the astrological student would start out by learning horary astrology, and
only when horary astrology was1 mastered, the apprentice would move on to natal astrology - i.e. the birth

chart. British astrologer Alan Leo (1860–1917) messed up this order, when he ignored horary astrology
and used the birth chart as the starting point for everything.
I always recommend newbies to start with horary astrology, because in this way:
1. You will perceive a chart as something dynamic, not something static (as with the birth chart)
2. It’s easy to learn horary astrology - you will master it within no more than 6 months, if you invest
time and effort in the project.
3. Horary astrology is quick-and-dirty, which means that you can see immediate results from you
astrological work. This immediate feedback will asure you that you are on the right track and
give you self confidence.
4. You will achieve an understanding that astrology is not 100% exact, but less than 100% will do in
most cases.
5. Once you master horary astrology, it is easy to move on to natal astrology - i.e. working with birth
charts.
You will find plenty of books on horary astrology on Amazon - or any other well-stocked astrology
bookshop. Almost all the available books on the subject starts out by defining horary astrology and its
ground rules, and in most cases they also provide the reader with a huge collection of example charts.

need to be observant. Everything in enviornment indicates about specific planets. Like Sun is a king of

You can read books or join institute to get help to understand nature and characteristics of 9 planets, 27

Step one should be getting comfortable lying to people, especially if you plan on working with astrology.
You’ll need to learn how to unflinchingly lie right in the face of your customers while taking their money,
not to feel any remorse if they cry at the bullshit you’re feeding them or ruining their entire lives because
of some falsehood you’ve made up.
Because that’s what you’ll be doing. Astrology is 100 % made up nonsense with no grounding in reality, so
every word you’ll say to someone based on it will be a lie.

When people who are not already well-schooled in one or another of the various forms of Astrology that
are available to learn about, it is hard to know what they actually know even, of what Astrology is! In
particular here in the West there is such a dominance by the popular press over what people are exposed
to, that what people think Astrology is only remotely corresponds to the authentic system. It has been
altered and distorted quite a bit, aside from the fact that there exist some extreme fundamental divisions
even among legitimate Astrology.
What is Astrology?
Therefore it would be useful to first go through a number of websites based on a search of something
like “what is Astrology” or “different systems of Astrology”. Once you are either aware of the one you’re
familiar with and want to learn about, or maybe find another that feels better for you, a larger task is next:
find resources from which to learn. However I have a fairly specific idea about that.
The Study of Astrology
Given the over-abundance of amateurs and those who struggle with Astrology as a result of attempts at
self-study, I don’t recommend that route. However I would recommend a time of self-study simply to get
familiar with basic concepts. After that I would seek teachers, which is again not an easy thing, by any
means. You will first need to consider those who teach a version/form of Astrology you’re interested in,
and then, more difficult yet, figure out how well they do this! Most people I’ve met who have taken
courses, whether the shorter cheaper ones or more involved ones, have come out the other end still with
an inadequate understanding for actually doing anything with it beyond the typical superficial and
simplistic discourses.
A Brighter Day
I don’t mean to make this sound so horrible, but I also don’t like seeing so many people either
disappointed or unknowingly unqualified after their studies. For this reason I’ve designed a course —the
3rd revision over the years— specifically to address this problem, based on a well-honed teaching
method. Maybe you could use a sample of my course design as a starting point when looking at other

To start your inquisitiveness you need:
1. Basic math skills. Esp. Arcs, angles, arithmetic with degrees.

I was asked to answer this question. That is why I am here.
Nobody can actually ‘learn Astrology’ because ‘predicting future’ is impossible for any one.
There is no such thing as scientific astrology. And astrology as we know it now is unknown during vedic
times. Therefore vedic astrology doesn’t exist in the first place.

It is the interest that counts. Astrology is always taken as a hobby and not the main line to have a future.
In my case after passing my chartered accountancy, I developed interest through my friends. Some
taught me th elements of this. Then I started reading books of B v Raman and others . I started reading
regular magazines. Internet was also my guide.Somehow, I took astrology as a positive friend to get only
the beneficial predictions by leaving the negatives on the ground the present good karma will take care
of. It. My predictions will only high light th positive side to give strength to the natives. Our predictions not
mainly depends upon our knowledge it requires the blessings of God. One should be a good person,
leading the life in line with dharma as per Vedic requirements by keeping himself happy in the right way
and also keeping othes happy. A right life with meditation powers can only give powers for predictions.
Such persons will have the intuition to read anyone’s life correctly . In astrology the powers comes
through Vedic life. In my opinion it should be taken as tool to help for others happiness , keeping this as
an hobby .The daily meditation will give the ways to learn astrology in May come through people, books
and Internet.

It was 1999, I joined my undergraduate at NIT, warangal. My room mate happened to be a palmist. It was
his interpretation of our hands that introduced me to the field of occult sciences. Meanwhile, my parents
used to consult an astrologer in Kurnool, who used to give amazingly accurate predictions. He used to tell

I have answered similar questions on Quora before. First, it depends on what type of astrology can want
to learn and how far you want to advance in this field.
If your main interest is modern or Humanistic astrology, the books listed below will get off to a good
start. There is certainly a great deal of reading involved if you want to master the fundamentals. (There
are few You Tube videos to consider. However, most of what I have seen are disappointing.)
You will find that people (famous or otherwise) who live life with gusto, with passion and intensity or the
very best subjects to start with, once you learn the basics. They tend to express the archetypal themes,
as shown in their birth chart, in very obvious ways. Whereas, people who go thru life not wanting to “make
waves” and just want to fit it are MUCH harder to read if you are relatively new to astrology. So, don’t
waste your time.
Again, I have no idea what type of astrology you want to learn. The writers/ astrologers shown below are
some of the best that I have found over the past 30 years. (There are several others, but I do not want to
overwhelm you !!!)
Astrology Books to consider
I strongly recommend that you check out books written by any of the following writers:
Liz Greene, Howard Sasportas, Robert Hand, Dr. Greg Bogart, Steven Arroyo, Dane Rudyhar, Bil Tierney,
Sue Tompkins, Richard Idemon, Robert Pelletier and A.T. Mann, to name just a few.
I suggest that you go to the Amazon website and read all of the reviews by people who have read their
books. See what appeals to you.
As a general rule some books authored by Dane Rudyhar and A. T. Mann are not "light" and can be

demanding for a new student. However, if you are up to the task, they are well worth it.

I would suggest start with K. N. Rao book... "Learn Hindu Astrology Easily"... Simultaneously start with
KRS channel(Kapiel Raaj) in YouTube.. Believe me, this guy is simply awesome.
Once you comfortable with basics.. Start by reading other blogs. Do not believe anything, just consider it.
Research it, whether the information they gave in their blog is true... Start doing your own research. This
way, you will learn astrology easily. Remember, this subject is divine and it's like an ocean. No matter how
much you learn, your knowledge on it will be like a drop only.... :)

his basics and has done commendable research in the subject. Once you are through with the basics you
can start your own research by referring to great astrology books like Lal kitab, bhrigu sanhita, parashar
etc. Learning basics does not take much time, but when you learn it from a genuine astrologer, it will

At the very beginning, you could benefit from the fundamentals: learn about the planets, signs and the
houses. Don’t worry about aspects or chart patterns immediately. Don’t focus on predictive techniques or
more specialized areas like synastry, composite charts, various methods of progression or direction. If
you want to look at predictive techniques early on, limit yourself to transits, which are perhaps the easiest
and most robust approach. You’ll never outgrow what you learn about planets, signs and houses - they’ll
always be useful, whatever direction you choose to go later, and will enrich later studies.

Just quickly and simply - you first have to have an astrologers chart which means that either Neptune or
Uranus will be accentuated, otherwise your stuck with plain earthly matters and don’t feel the underlying
tone that events in your life were meant to happen and something other than your thought processes had
an influence.
You obviously have this otherwise you wouldn’t be asking. The next thing is to analyse your own chart
since this is the big draw card - understanding yourself - I’m still digging up nuggets that I’ve been blind
sided with in the past. So often you need life’s experience to really know aspects of yourself - its a never
ending journey.
And finally you just need a book that makes sense and a computer program that will calculate charts for
you since you will want to move onto friends once you have a basic understanding of your own chart. The
book I found way back in 1986 was the one now sitting on my desk (had to check something): The
Modern Text-Book of Astrology - Margaret E. Hone The Modern Text-Book of Astrology: Margaret Hone:

The program I use is Solar Fire which I bought in 1996 after drawing charts up by hand which would take
an hour or so - now its instant and the program has embedded interpretations for all planets, house

which you don’t understand. For e.g. if you don’t understand what is ascendant then search for how to
know what is your ascedant and what it means. Slowly slowly when you connect all the dots you will start
seeing the big picture and you will start appreciating this knowledge. Its not bullshit. It works 100%. But
its a predicting science after learning basics and rules. That is not everyone can do.
