Lincoln Unit Plan - 3rd Grade

Lesson Plan Day 3

Date Taught: 12/09/2019

Topic: Word Problems using addition or subtraction

Standard: 3.NBT.2 Use place value understanding and properties of operations to

perform multi-digit arithmetic

Objectives: Students will be able to use addition and subtraction to solve word
problems.

Assessment Plan: We will check for understanding as we have students come up with
their own word problems. We will discuss what to look for in a word problem and they
will be able to participate in creating and solving word problems. In the independent
practice, they will write their own word problem, we will check it, and then they will
switch with another student to solve it.

Materials Needed:

- Paper
- Pencils
- Base 10 blocks
- Whiteboards
- Whiteboard markers
- Whiteboard erasers
- Base 10 blocks

Anticipatory Set (Gain attention/motivation/recall prior knowledge):

- We will have 2 new students pick an item from the box that represents our
interests and we will explain them.

Instructional Inputs:
· Set expectations as part of inputs. Let students know and understand what is
expected
· The critical inputs necessary for students to understand the lesson concepts
or prepare them for modeling
· Plan questions to insure higher order thinking
Modeling:

- Go through 2 word problems together and demonstrate how to identify who/what

it is about, what we know, and what we are being asked to work out.
1. Jason bakes 36 chocolate chip cookies for his class. While they were
cooling on the tray, his 2 little sisters and his dad each ate 3 cookies. How
many cookies were left for Jason’s class?
2. Sydney’s family drove from Rexburg to Anaheim, California to go to
Disneyland over the Thanksgiving break. They first drove 539 miles to
Saint George and stayed the night there. The next day they drove the rest
of the way to Disneyland, which was 385 miles. How many miles did
Sydney’s family drive in total?

Guided Practice:

- Come up with a word problem by asking the student to choose a subject, what
the activity is, amounts/values, and what we want to solve.
- Solve this word problem together
- Repeat with a new problem

Independent practice/application:

- Give each student a card which has either a plus or a minus sign to assign them
the type of word problem to write.
- Each student will make their own word problem based on the operation assigned
and check with us to make sure it is appropriate and accurate
- They will then swap with another student and solve the word problem they
receive.

Closure:
- Rate on their hands (1-5) how comfortable they feel with word problems
- What are some challenges they face when solving word problems?
- What do they like about word problems?

We did a review of addition and subtraction at the start of the lesson where we gave
them problems to solve independently on their whiteboards. We noticed that there were
gaps in their understanding, especially when it came to subtracting from numbers
containing a zero. We taught them how to subtract when there is a zero in the number
and then had them work in partnerships to solve problems with zeros. We did not get
around to word problems in this lesson.
