UV-SUN® PES UV absorber

UV PROTECTION

USES
Dyeing and printing of textiles for sun protective clothing.
To improve the sun screening properties of items such as children's and baby wear, open-air sports
wear (e.g. jogging, football, tennis, golf, sailing, etc.), beach, swim and leisure wear (T-shirts, shirts,
blouses, hats, etc.), agricultural work wear, and uniforms (military, post office, police, school, etc.).
To improve the sun screening properties and stability to light of technical textiles such as tenting,
roofing, awning and parasol fabrics, other fabrics used to provide shadow, shade and household
textiles such as blinds.

NOTES

The effects attainable depend on the type of polyester fiber (texture, amount of delustrant, denier
and cross section), the dyes used and the individual shade.
UV-SUN PES UV absorber shows a slightly yellow self-shade in printing and pad-thermosol
application. On certain bright shades this might be an impairment whereas on trichromatic systems
it could minimize the fading of the yellow component.

Influence of fabric porosity on the UPF

To ensure adequate protection against ultraviolet radiation, the textiles in question have to satisfy
given physical requirements. To minimize the amount of sunlight that penetrates the textile and
reaches the skin, the porosity (area of pores per unit area) must not be higher than 2.0%. For
excellent protection[2], this value should be less than 1.5%. The porosity is defined as the sum of
the direct UV A and UV B transmittance of a given fabric, whereas the area of textile minus the
porosity results in the skin coverage of the textile.
The UPF is a

The theoretically
possible maximum UPF refers to a textile in which all UV radiation is absorbed. The transmission of
UV radiation is influenced by substrate, dye, depth of shade and amount of UV absorber. The
achievable protection is up to around 80 % of the theoretical value.

[2] UPF 50+ is the highest rating for sun protective textiles in Australia/New Zealand (referred to
new, unwashed textile in the dry, relaxed state). Textiles with a UPF of 40 to 50 and 50+ are
rated as “Excellent Protection” (AS/NZS 4399:1996).
