It’s three in the morning and I’m just about to finish a glass of red wine.
A good old friend of mine has just left after we’ve once again blasted
“The Wicked Symphony” and “Angel Of Babylon” over the stereo in order
to test it one more time. And no matter what happens in terms of commercial
success: I know we've got a winner here because we enjoyed producing it,
and because I am damn proud of what we’ve created. It’s been a giant
undertaking, maybe the most ambitious project I’ve ever worked on.
It’s incredible - we have produced two albums complete with 22 songs!
Twenty two full songs and in my humble opinion - No fillers!
What a weird concept that has become…

Conceptually the two new albums are the continuation of “The Scarecrow”
story. Back when we started the “The Scarecrow” trilogy I said the following
about the concept: 'The Scarecrow is a tragic story of a lonesome creature,
emotionally isolated from his environment and suffering from a distorted
sensory perception. His feelings for the love of his life unrequited he sets off on
a journey exploring the left-hand path, striving for inner peace, ploughing his
way to approval and eventually facing temptation at the inner depths of the
human soul...'

And now we are here at the point where the story continues: It’s a tragedy
about getting caught between two worlds. Here are the good intentions,
visions, the dream of creating something divine and pure that is meant to
result in love. And there you've got the demons that go along with the
acclaim and approval that all of us vain and proud creatures mistakenly might
call love sometimes. I guess I don’t have to explain the concept, but would
rather let you put on your headphones and let the music and the pictures in
your head do the talking – letting the spirit come alive! The scarecrow is you,
the scarecrow is me. I dedicate this album to you out there, who know what
it’s like to inhale the scent of great music and the smell of vinyl.
I dedicate it to those who are willing to refuse to unlearn how to feel music.

THE WICKED SYMPHONY
[music & words: Sammet]

You’ll be running out of miracles

Like I’m running out of dreams
Madness lurking to my left
Angels faint in front of me

And I see eyes to the right

I hear a promise resound
Gold and diamonds, love and fame There’ll be nowhere to go You can turn your face away
And music meant to remain Just oblivion, we’re so close to reach out Can pretend you don’t hear it
Close to fall, make up or break up or crawl How long have you been
You’ve been dying for glory Begging on your knees
You’ve been looking for love You are striving for beauty And now that you’re near it
Why don’t we read the signs For a song to remain Won’t you be damned
When we’re about to get lost A final touch and the spirit you have cited If you defy what you’re given
Holds on to the reins Mercury of salvation
A seeker enthralled by a flame The colors for the eyes of the world
Eventually home to his pain I feel how I’m losing my ground We’ll be kings for generations
The Great Unbeloved A dancer enthralled by a sound
You reach for the final stage The smoke clears away Hey man in your hideaway
I’ll reach for the final stage Where do we go from here
Hey man in your hideaway Heroes in a tragedy
Where do we go from here Hey man in your hideaway Down-home just a memory
Heroes in a tragedy Where do we go from here Where do we go
Down-home just a memory Heroes in a tragedy When the world gets in the way
Where do we go Down-home just a memory
When the world gets in the way Where do we go Way down to the hideaway
When the world gets in the way Afflatus Divine!
Way down to the hideaway Your hands and a wicked symphony
Afflatus Divine! Your hands Way down to the hideaway, afflatus Divine! Hey now to the hideaway
And a wicked symphony Your hands and a wicked symphony Lock up the rain for a wicked symphony
Hey now to the hideaway Hey now to the hideaway
Lock up the rain for a wicked symphony Lock up the rain for a wicked symphony – Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass
– Jorn Lande – lead vocals
– Russell Allen – lead vocals
Don’t you give up on your emotions Oh I can hear it, I can hear it – Sascha Paeth – guitars
Don’t you abandon your despair Oh I can hear it, I, I, I, I... – Miro Rodenberg – orchestration
– Felix Bohnke – drums
If you deny what you desire I can hear it, yeah
This will have been just a mystery play I’m dying for a sign

WASTELANDS
[music & words: Sammet]

A moment of glory
The blink of an eye and it's all gone
You hide in confinement
Dark is the cell that you call home
You owe the power and your pace
We pretend to be blind To the brute that's running after you
Everytime it hurts to see Humiliation’s growing hate
Righteous anger driving you
You - you close your eyes
To blink the night away Cut off the hand
At ease in the wastelands That tries to keep me back
You - you're dead and blind Blinding fury, a piece of paradise
You sanctify the way Cause heaven justifies
Blindfold in the wastelands
To take your eyes off the drag
Don't tell me in pain Walking to the block
The end doesn't justify the means At the scaffold scales held even
Spado, ascetic SCALES OF JUSTICE To take your eyes off the drag
It's easy to sermonize in jealousy [music & words: Tobias Sammet] Walking to the block
Look away, scales held even
Now I'm off to life Predetermination, belief
I'm changing sides Veracity of incidents Just close your eyes, just look away
Your final goodbye Reconciliation What you don’t want to know
Between justice and tomorrow Ain’t gonna hurt you
You - you close your eyes You’re innocent Time passes by, we all die anyway
To blink the tears away And no nothing remains
Love hurts in the wastelands It's only human to just close your eyes Whatever you say, whatever you do
You - you're old and blind Blinding fury, part of paradise
You sacrifice it all Heaven justifies To take your eyes off the drag
Lost in the wastelands Walking to the block
To take your eyes off the drag At the scaffold scales held even
You - you close your eyes Walking to the block To take your eyes off the drag
To blink the night away... At the scaffold scales held even Walking to the block
Take your eyes off the drag Look away, scales held even
– Michael Kiske – lead vocals Walking to the block
– Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass Look away, scales held even To take your eyes off the drag
– Sascha Paeth – rhythm guitars & lead guitar
– Oliver Hartmann – lead guitar Walking to the block...
– Miro Rodenberg – keyboards You owe the power and your pace
– Eric Singer – drums To the brute that's running after you – Tim “Ripper” Owens – lead vocals
– Tobias Sammet – additional lead vocals & bass
Humiliation’s growing hate – Sascha Paeth – guitars
Righteous anger driving you – Alex Holzwarth – drums

DYING FOR AN ANGEL
[music & words: Sammet]

You’re awake in your darkest dream

I have come for you
And nobody can hear you scream
When I reach for you

Don’t you remember their feet in your face

Before they have carved you in stone
And don’t you remember your sweat and your pain

When you were drawn to the bone

When you were left all alone
Living on a dream
Living on a dream Lonely, cold and dire
Dying for an angel Head up, feet down in the fire
Reach out, waiting for a miracle Giving till you’re gone
No sign of wings as you turn back on me Dying for an angel everyday

Living on a dream Living on a dream

Lonely, cold and dire Dying for an angel
Head up, feet down in the fire Reach out, waiting for a miracle
Giving till you’re gone No sign of wings as you turn your back on me
Dying for an angel everyday
Living on a dream
Where do we go from the apogee Dying for an angel
What do we leave behind Reach out, waiting for a miracle
And how will I stand what I’ll have to see No sign of wings as you turn back on me
This reflection of mine Waiting for a miracle

Collateral damage: your sacrifice Living on a dream

Gotta learn to fly, unlearn to fall Lonely, cold and dire
Gotta tear down the walls of love and lies Head up, feet down in the fire
You have come on your own Giving till you’re gone
You will go on all alone Dying for an angel everyday

Living on a dream Living on a dream...

Dying for an angel
Reach out, waiting for a miracle – Klaus Meine – lead vocals
– Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass
No sign of wings as you turn back on me – Sascha Paeth – guitars & keyboards
– Eric Singer – drums

BLIZZARD ON A BROKEN MIRROR RUNAWAY TRAIN
[music & words: Sammet] [music & words: Sammet]

Faces in this empty room Lord are you hiding in the haze? Goodbye No turning back
Cited in despair The seventh door I’ll try is daze Your pocket full of dreams Hang on to a runaway train
Gazes that I had invoked Angel send another storm Your mind in a daze Take me away
They’re driving me insane now To face another dawn Keep on chasing rainbows
Walls have eyes they’re staring down on me Fly high If I'm a stranger to myself
From everywhere around Close your eyes now Leave the past behind Then I better gotta stay away
Kingdom on the broken mirror The dark road you take bears no escape Even better gotta get away, get away
In the face of dreams I had Close your eyes now Time to pick my poison
Grimaces of pain Blizzard on the broken mirror In a world of grand illusions
Now I am turning helpless The scent of goodbye Where love is just a dream Feel the devil sitting in my neck
Callous and alone They’re dying away: the sands of time You gotta make your sacrifices Straight ahead into the unknown
Waiting for a storm to brew Time to pick your poison Oh father I forgive you for I
To wash my dream and love and sins away Close your eyes now Don't know what I'm doing
Kingdom on the broken mirror The fool is he who is noble minded
I’m with you Close your eyes now And bellies up to poverty It's only human nature
I’m the other side Blizzard on the broken mirror He's not a king in the world of diamonds To keep away from pain
You just gotta try The scent of goodbye Paling into oblivion Take a train to ecstasy oh
Fly now! No one’s gonna care They’re dying away: the sands of time Ride on, ride on
Cause no one’s gonna know They’re dying away: the sands of time I lay down my soul for glory
What no one’s ever seen I've given a life away Inhale the scent of heaven
– Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass Don't know if I am sorry Respire the smell of fame
– Andre Matos – lead vocals
Close your eyes now – Sascha Paeth – guitars & keyboards Blind me, blind me You've been to hell and back
Kingdom on the broken mirror – Felix Bohnke - drums You can't change things anyway, no
Close your eyes now Don't know where I'll be going
Blizzard on the broken mirror I gotta get away I hang on to a runaway train
The scent of goodbye From the pain of recollection No turning back
They’re dying away: the sands of time Drawn into the faint Tethered to a runaway train
Sands of time Take me away
Hang on to a runaway train Torpid in the wind and rain
Fortune favors just the brave No turning back No turning back
That’s what the blessed always say Tethered to a runaway train I hang on to a runaway train
Love will come in time Take me away Take me away
But I’m always late Torpid in the wind and rain
I pray the wine my will to take
And those evil hands to tie
Wreaking havoc
Baneful sight is growing dim

Tie the dream I’ve had my fill

Raze the love and tie my will
Fires ploughing up my head
Oh forgive I will forget

8
Reaching out to rule the world
You'll watch the mirror shatter
As you'll be dazzled by the sight
Once only diamonds mattered

How can you justify the way

When you wake up screaming
Will you pretend that you were blind
When you were really seeing

Your image everywhere

The looking glass: A sheet of ice
It's thick enough to dance on
In a frozen realm of lies

But the ice will break

And you will scream repenting
Oh boy the ice will break
You'll just feel your heart rending

Riding on to a world of funny flowers

Riding on to the white wide world
If coming back would hurt my pride Take me away
I rather take another ride Torpid in the wind and rain
Riding on, winter on the mirror I hang on to a runaway train
Riding on into the unknown Take me away
If I'll awake in pain one day
I gotta catch just one more train Hang on to a runaway train
No turning back
Days gone by Tethered to a runaway train
Who’d wanna live forever Take me away
On our knees up your road Torpid in the wind and rain
Paved with good intentions In the wind and rain
Fly high I hang on to that runaway train
Where angels can’t breathe no more
Some dare to go blind – Bob Catley – lead vocals
– Jorn Lande – lead vocals
Some stay behind – Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass
– Michael Kiske – lead vocals
I hang on to a runaway train – Bruce Kulick – lead guitar
– Sascha Paeth – rhythm guitar & lead guitar intro
No turning back – Miro Rodenberg – piano & orchestration
Tethered to a runaway train – Eric Singer – drums

CRESTFALLEN
[music & words: Sammet]

Ill-defined as I look in the mirror

Am I blind, am I blind
Am I given or just a straying fool
Feel it near
Something’s here to watch

I feel their eyes sending shivers down my spine

Evil eyes, evil eyes
See me crawling as I’m falling off the edge
Paralyze, tantalize

Feel it there
From everywhere it sounds

And you’ll fall away from heaven

Once you know you can’t take no more of it
You will fall away from heaven
By the time you can see the crime against you

Hey – desperation
Angels crashing from the sky
How can you hold on to your way
In your mental disarray
I am your struggles
The answer to your pain
I am the fury in your eyes
I am reason, I am vice

It’s there
From everywhere it sounds

And you’ll fall away from heaven

Once you know you can’t take no more of it
You will fall away from heaven
By the time you can see the crime against you

And you’ll fall away from heaven

Once you know you can’t take no more of it
You will fall away from heaven
By the time you can see the crime against you
– Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass
– Jorn Lande – lead vocals
– Sascha Paeth – rhythm guitars, lead guitar, keyboards
– Olli Hartmann – lead guitar: 2nd solo
– Eric Singer - drums

FOREVER IS A LONG TIME
[music & words: Sammet]

Oh yeah

Young is the day

Still it’s the same
The same old tomorrow We keep on waiting
Colors too bright For a choice to be made
So dream in black and white There ain’t no bounty for the passion
If you wanna rise from the hollow We rein in for love

The future in sight You are defying the devil

The past in your head Forever this time
Nightmare or treason But you can’t imagine
The father above you as you Forever will drag on a long long time
Walk through the ashes You are defying salvation
Don’t you run out of reason The wait is your crime
Stalemate in virtue we falter
You keep on waiting Forever is a long time
For your choice to be made Forever is a long time
There ain’t no bounty It’s gonna take forever
For the number of passions
You rein in for love Oh - young is the day
Still it’s the same
You are defying the devil The same old tomorrow
Forever this time Colors too bright
But you can’t imagine So dream in black and white
Forever will drag on a long long time Wanna rise from the hollow
You are defying salvation
The wait is your crime You are defying the devil
Stalemate in virtue we falter Forever this time
Forever is a long time But you can’t imagine
Forever will drag on
Pleasure and pain feel all the same A long long time
To the dreamer who’s trying to get closer You are defying salvation
Strange how it feels in reality The wait is your crime
When your fairytale is over Stalemate in virtue we falter
Forever is a long time
No right or wrong
I just keep going on – Jorn Lande – lead vocals
– Tobias Sammet – lead vocals, organ & bass
And I don’t get lost in belief – Sascha Paeth – lead guitar & rhythm guitars
– Olli Hartmann – lead guitar: 2nd part
Falter and pray – Alex Holzwarth - drums

Keep looking away

I don’t wanna see

BLACK WINGS
[music & words: Sammet]

I’ve been here through a million ages Who do you think you are
I am the savior inside To tell me what to say
Tonight I am love and justice Who do you think you are
Tomorrow perversion to spite To tell me what to play
And what not to break
And now that it’s bleeding you dry
I’m calling you, I’m calling you And out in the rain
When temperance is bleeding you dry I’ll hide under wings I’d curse in sunlight
I’m knocking you off the perch Out in the rain
You can break me and take me away
And out in the rain On wings of fury
I’ll hide under wings I’d curse in sunlight And when you face another sun
– Ralf Zdiarstek – lead vocals
Out in the rain – Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass It’s the union of the states of matter
You can break me and take me away – Sascha Paeth – guitars & keyboards
On wings of fury – Felix Bohnke - drums
Failure and defeat and all the riches surely beat
Where I have been and what I have been before
Live your tragic comedy And when the sands of time run low
I’m the poison in your veins Commemoration of a lonely crow
Circumspection, vanity That would have made it through the door
You give all they can take
Light and affection
I am fury, I am fire, I’m the worm inside Darkness and pain
Deliver you from self-denial tonight Mind of matter
The All’s gonna make it all the same
When temperance is bleeding you dry I’m inside
And when the final day has come
And out in the rain STATES OF MATTER Another state of matter
I’ll hide under wings I’d curse in sunlight [music & words: Sammet] When you will face another sun
Out in the rain Union of the states of matter
You can break me and take me away Your mind to infinity
On wings of fury Let reason rivet on your feet or you may fall Light and affection
You’re drawn into a distant glow Darkness and pain
You dream of voices from on high Mind of matter
But can’t evade another rainy night The All’s gonna make it all the same
And putting on another show
And when the final day has come
Hate and affection It’s another state of matter
Pleasure and pain And when you face another sun
Modes of vibration It’s the union of the states of matter
Unveiling to be all the same
– Russell Allen – lead vocals
– Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & keyboards
And when the final day has come – Sascha Paeth – guitars & bass
It’s another state of matter – Alex Holzwarth – drums

THE EDGE
[music & words: Sammet]

When I was sent to walk this long cold way Fingers bleed onto the ivory Don’t need no glory
I‘d never meant to take it all this far They dance on the keys The bottle and I
Nobody told me I was bound to stray To a churchyard of angels I don’t need your sympathy as I
You gave me visions and cut out this part Hang on the edge
Don’t need no glory
When the journey is over The bottle and I Don’t need no glory
Then what will remain Don’t need your sympathy at all The bottle and I
But a churchyard of angels As I hang on the edge I don’t need your sympathy at all
As I hang on the edge
Don’t need no glory Don’t need no glory Hang on the edge
The bottle and I Till the river’s run dry
Don’t need no sympathy at all I won’t cry for sympathy as I – Tobias Sammet – lead vocals & bass
– Sascha Paeth – rhythm guitars
As I hang on the edge Hang on the edge – Bruce Kulick – lead guitars
– Simon Oberender – organ
Don’t need no glory No, don’t need no glory – Felix Bohnke – drums

Till the river’s run dry The bottle and I

I won’t cry for sympathy as I Don’t need your sympathy at all
Hang on the edge As I hang on the edge

When your were shackles chances passed me by Don’t need no glory

I’ve broken free Till the river’s run dry
Now I’m free falling I won’t cry for sympathy as I
Laid down my arms as you laid down the lie: Hang on the edge
Those words you didn’t say when I was calling
