Date: 10th, 17th, 24th October Atheena Therese and Persis
Sajan conducted sessions with the students of class IV. The
topics covered were hobbies and time management, the
importance of food and lessons on non wastage of food,
pollution and how can we celebrate Diwali without crackers.
They used informative videos on the topics to convey and
connect better to the students and it proved to be effective.

students were divided into groups of 4 and were given different topics
on social issues like child safety, clean environment, bullying in school
etc to discuss on and share with the class.In another session the
consequences of peer pressure and how they can overcome it was
discussed. "

On 21st of October Bidisha and Memthoibi started the session with a
small introduction where the students told their names and hobbies.
After that, they conducted a round of quiz and group discussion on
various social issue related problems among the students. They
ended the session by asking the students to tell one good thing that
happened to then in the previous week."

On 23rd October, Vipin and Akash conducted a session, for over 250
studnets, on the topic ""Fire Less Crackers in Diwali. The session was
started with the curiosity for burning crackers. and then the students
were briefed about the harmful effects and impacts. Diseases caused by
air pollutions, about Delhi smog and polluted cities in India etc were
discussed.At last, the students were asked to contribute for this green
diwali initiative by burning less crackers or no crackers at all this Diwali."

The sessions were around saving and caring for the environment. They
discussed about climate change and how we can protect our environment
with just few changes in our mindset and daily activities i.e. saving water,
planting more trees etc. Also the concept of safe and Eco Friendly Diwali
was introduced to the students along with some safety tips for Diwali.

Shivani and Maneesha took a session on the topic ""How to make your day
more productive and effective"" and then discussed about their daily activity
and how much time should spend in it. The seesions in Little Flower school
will be discontinued for their break. Their last session had a lot of fun
activities like Crafts and dancing and singing."

The sessions start with meditation. Sonal Rai and Annanya keep the
session interactive and imparts general knowledge to the students
along with computer knowledge in every session. This month they also
tried to teach new things to the students through audio visuals which
proved to be effective"

During the sessions golden rules of effective communication and the dos and don'ts of it
were discussed. They also spoke about the advantages of communicating with confidence
and how one can excel at it even in a multilingual setting. Other factors like body posture,
hasty speech, body language, hand movement, gestures which are important while speaking
were also discussed. Also we spoke about physical and mental health and how it's important
to our well-being. We also told them that they should never shy away from sharing their
positive as well as negative emotions and discussed about the benefits of healthy practices
that they should follow every day.

Ms. Kiran Bhapra (In- Charge of start ups at Google India) was a guest in one of the
sessions. She helped the kids to realise that goal setting is important but also how to set
goals, to realise the objectives behind the goals and also being specific about goals and yet
being open to changes as and when they know themselves better. The kids also talked to
us about their parents and we encouraged them to share their stories with their parents
and offering to help their parents on their own. Also introduction in team work, leadership
and self-involvement in a group work and responsible citizenship were undertaken."

After the initial ice breaking session we started with self introductions during which the
students spoke on their good and bad habits, likes and dislikes and hobbies. When the
students couldnt state theit own good or bad habits we asked their friends to state them and
they pointed out some important sides of their friend's personality. Hence it was a combined
session on introduction, knowing yourself and appreciating others. Also Personality
developement class with discussion on body posture and behaviour followed by smart act
which was actively participated in by the students"

On 17th October volunteer Maneesha conducted a session on Peer
Pressure with Class 7 kids. How to avoid the situation, outcomes of
such pressure and how to deal with them. It was a very interactive
session as students could relate to it and shared their own
experiences"

During the sessions the kids were made to do activities from the Sunshine Journal
Book. The kids also learnt about different body parts and learned basic maths. A
test was also taken. Drawing competition in which they have to draw ""diya"" and
colour it, was also conducted . Kids were so good in drawing and they decorated
their sheets . Everyone participated in competition . Kids wrote their name in the
corner of the sheet

Mahim and Muskan started off the sessions here with introductory and
ice breaking activities. They emphasised on the good habits and also
played Smart Act with the kids. Other fun activities and paper art were
also inroduced."

Bidisha continued to hold regular sessions at Kalipur giving the kids various
lessons on Maths and English which included spellings, recitation, essay
writing, multiplicationa nd square tables, and other basic maths. Other then
that they also had drawing session and memory game was played"

On 2nd October, Neelima and Akhil, started the session with an inspirational
video, followed by asking them few questions about the things shown in the
video and explaining them in brief about most important work and motivating
them. Being Gandhi Jayanti on that day they also discussed about Mahatma
Gandhi. it was followed with some more videos on health and functioning of
heart, Women empowerment and few stories about few known people, who
worked hard and now where they are and some funny videos. The session ended
by a dance performance of two kids"

addition to English and Maths lessons, Drawing and crafts sessions were also
conducted for all round development of the kids. Fun games like "Know The
Word" were included for fun learning.

Jesika taught the kids to properly introduce themselves in English and
played fun games like word game and recerse game. They were also
asked to conduct a survey and fill the Responsible Citizenship Pledge
form and the kids who submitted that form were given certificates.
Good manners and Respecting others were discussed.
JAIPUR
Apna Ghar
Date: 6th and 13th October
Garima and Priya introduced kids to map of India and introduced them to
states, UTs, capitals, government, neighboring countries, etc. They also
discussed about Gandhiji. Also various Maths, Science, Hindi and English
related lessons were given along with Drawing. Also the benefits of trees
and their role in sustaining life on Earth was discussed. "
TILJALA

This month a Health camp was organised in Tiljala. They along with their
parents came one by one and their check up was done by Dr Khemani. It
was a succesful event. Along with the camp the other children played with
the volunteers. In other sessions Smart Act, Translations and Sentence
Framing was taught and practiced.

The students here love to play and not study ( sounds normal but it is a
little above normal standards) so the volunteers include more fun activities
which also help in their learning. This month they played story formation
which gave boost to their creativity as well as sentence building. Other
than that they love to play with colours so they had drawing sessions
where our volunteers taught them some drawing techniques.

Another new sunshine centre in Kolkata. It got amazing turnout with over
30 kids. After the initial introductory and ice breaking sessions that
involved dancing (the kids love dancing) other important topics like
knowing ones good and bad habits, knowing oneself, environmental
awareness etc were touched upon. Also there were drawing sessions and
time was devoted to helping them with their school curriculum.

On 20th October Krittika and Santu conducted the first
session here where they played a number of ice breaking
games some of which were suggested by the kids
themselves and their self introduction.

On 20th October Simran restarted the session with the
kids after Puja. Their doubts were cleared and they
were taught new words through sentence building and
were also told about homonyms.

The Hazra is a new location where we started sunshines this month. The group saw
a growth over the period. The initial session included more fun games for ice
breaking. Then the volunteers helped them in their studeies as well. Other than that
emphasis is placed on improving their communication skills through story telling
and likes. Each day new English words are taught to the kids. They are taught to
help others, to see the positive in people, to overcome their fear of getting out of
the comfort zone, to saying yes to opportunities and not giving up without trying
etc. The kids also show great interest and talent in Drawing and Dancing.

Dum Dum Park
Date: 20th, 26th, 27th and 28th October
Volunteers: Nitesh, Goutami, Shushant, Chaya, Simran
Focus is on improving their English and the kids are also enthusiastic about learning
English. They are taught english by helping them translate their own thoughts and views
from Bangali to English. Other than helping them in their school curriculum, drawing and
craft activities were included. Audio visuals were also used to improve their understanding.
An innovative game of spotting places on goolgle maps was introduced which helped them
both in geography and learning to use a very helpful App.
Also Volunteer Goutami met with the parents of the kids and had a meeting on the growth
of the kids and the importance of Regular Sunshine Sessions.

On 13th October Srija, Poonam and Maria took a class with the kids and
helped them with their doubts in studies. They even did some reading
from their English book and pronunciation of difficult words. The
session ended with some games which included a tad bit of physical
activity.

Volunteers here take keen interest in helping the students in completing their
home tasks and preparing them for their upcoming exams before involving them in
other activities. The students also started using the Fun and Learn workbooks this
month. The studnets here share their problems and stories with the volunteers
which is a good sign. One fine day they also played Kho Kho.They thoroughly
enjoyed it and were reminded of the discipline they had to maintain for everyone to
play the game in the first place. They also discussed the reason for celebrating
Diwali
KOLKATA
Bidhannagar, Salt Lake

Since the students are a mix of school goers and non goers the volunteers need to
handle them cautiously. During the numerous sessions with these kids during the
month the kids were given various personality development lessons on body language,
introduction in bengali as well as English. They were taught new English words through
essay writing and such tasks. Alphabets were introduced to the non-goers and they
were keen on learning. Activities like identifying the picture were involved where all
kids could take part. Since Diwali and Durga Puja were star festivals this month, there
were festival related discussions like relevance of Durga Puja and Eco friendly Diwali.
They were also imparted with general knowledge on India like ministers and states of
India.
KOLKATA

Every year students from remote areas like Purulia are brought here
for a period of around 10 days and are provided with classes with
lessons that will benefit them in their studies and in life at large,
Adore India conducted session each day from 11th October to 20th
October which was to end with a talent show which was entirely put
up by the kids with little guidance from our volunteers. Issues that
were taken up with the students were Time management, Personality
Development, Wastage of Food, Effective Communication, Good
Manners, Respecting Elders, Knowing Themselves, and General
Knowledge. Various games like Kabaddi, Dog Bone, Reverse action etc
were played with the kids. A Magic show by Mr. S Palit was also
organised for the kids to enjoy. Also Creative quest was organised for
them and the students showed very good drawing skillss. On the day
of talent fest the students put forward a very good show showcasing
their drama, song and yoga etc which they prepared in very little time
EDITORIAL NOTE
The best part of compiling a newsletter is not only
that you see different activities and their processes
but also you learn from other volunteers who did
activities in different ways and made the session more
informative and connective. we are glad that we got
this opportunity to compile the October newsletter.
