Orff Lesson: Sleep, Baby, Sleep

Prior Knowledge Students know how to match pitch.

Primary Students will sing and match pitch with mi-re-do patterns in a song.

Process Initiation:
Exploration  Teacher will say: “Good Afternoon, will everyone come sit on the
Imitation floor in the middle, please? I have a story I want to share with you:
Improvisation My cousin just had a baby. The other day my cousin asked me “Josie,
Creation do you have any songs I can sing to my baby?” I didn’t know of any, so
I did some research and I found one, but before I show it to her, I
need your help with singing the song, will you do that with me?”
Melody:
 Teacher will say: “Will you gently rock an imaginary baby in your
arms?”
o teacher will model rocking an imaginary baby
o While students start rocking their imaginary baby, teacher will
use her recorder to find her starting pitch.
o Teacher will play an “A” on the recorder and will point to
herself indicating she will sing the whole song.
 Sleep, baby, sleep; Father tends the sheep; Mother
shakes the dreamland tree and down come all the
trees for thee. Sleep, baby, sleep.
o Teacher will then go to computer and reveal the visual of
words and teach the song phrase-by-phrase.
 Point to self and sing “Sleep, baby, sleep;”
 Then point to students for them to sing what you sang.
 Point to self: “Father tends the sheep;”
 Point to students for then to sing.
 Point to self: “Mother shakes the dream land tree and
down come all the dreams for thee”
 Sing it twice for students to grab more words
than the first time
 Point to students for them to sing.
 Point to self: Sleep, baby, sleep.
 Teacher will say “That was so good! Let’s sing the whole song all
together now!”
 Teacher will say “I have a challenge for you, can you rock your baby
and sing at the same time?
 “Oh! I thought I could trick you, but you are all so smart! Let’s sing
the song again, this time with rocking your baby!”
 Teacher will choose student teachers to help class with singing.
