Placing the logo


Safe zone
A clear ‘safe zone’ should be used, as
indicated below, so that no other type or
graphic information infringes on the logo.
An equal clear area should be left on all
sides of the logo which should be no
smaller than the measurement ‘z’ as
indicated below.
The ‘z’ measurement is measured from the
‘cap height’ of the top line of text and the
‘baseline’ of the bottom line of text as per
the diagram.

Positioning of logo with other logos


For horizontal positioning the logo should
be placed to the extreme left. For vertical
positioning the logo should be positioned to
the top of the alignment.

Occasionally the logo may be used with


other logos whose placement may take
precedence over the Department logo e.g.
the NDP or EU logos. It is wise to check if
other logos are subject to their own usage
guidelines before proceeding.

Colour usage
Primary colours
The principle colours of the Department
of Transport logo are Pantone 376 and
Pantone 634. Single colour and spot colour
applications, this should be colour-matched
to a pantone colour swatch. The codes for

Complementary colours
A palette of complementary colours has
been chosen to go with the new identity.
The colours proposed can be used as back-
ground colours for document/brochure cov-
ers or as tint boxes in reports. The intention
is to increase the colour opportunities avail-
able on design projects. Their colour refer-
ences are illustrated in the chart below

Typography
Fonts
The main font used in the Department of
Transport logo is Trade Gothic This typeface
should be used as a headline font for
display type. ‘Department of Transport’
is set in Trade Gothic Bold Condensed
Oblique. ‘An Roinn Iompair’ is set in
Trade Gothic Oblique. Trade Gothic is
available in a variety of weights and easily
sourced from any supplier of typefaces.

The font Arial is to be used for internal


documents. Arial is a default PC font and
is supplied with windows.

Layout
The logo and documents - A formats
When placing the Department of Transport
logo on a document use a simple one half
margin within which to place the
Department of Transport logo to the left or
right at the top or bottom of the document.
This will apply to A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5.

logo should be placed in the top third or the bottom third of the document to maximise
on the image area.

Incorrect usage
The logo used incorrectly
The key to good identity is a consistency of application. The application
of the Department of Transport logo must conform to the guidelines set
out in this document. Below are some examples of incorrect usage.

Do not frame the logo in white, use the reverse version of Correct usage.

Advertising
Advertising and publications
Layout and design of advertisements and
publications should follow the following
guidelines; ample clear space around the
logo, text or images should never crowd
the logo. Images should take advantage of
dramatic cropping to heighten overall
impact. Always use the correct Trade Gothic
typeface, contrasts in font weight will add
to both message and legibility. Never repro-
duce the logo in colours other than those
specified.
