5. Official welcome

On behalf of Parliament, the President welcomed members of a delegation from the People’s National
Congress of the People’s Republic of China, led by Mrs Li Shu-Zheng, Vice-Chairman of the Committee
on Foreign Affairs, who had taken their seats in the official gallery.

6. Refugee status in Member States * (debate)

Mr Watson introduced his report, drawn up on behalf of the Committee on Citizens’ Freedoms and Rights,
Justice and Home Affairs, on the proposal for a Council directive on minimum standards on procedures in
Member States for granting and withdrawing refugee status (COM(2000) 578  C5-0705/2000  2000/
0238(CNS)) (A5-0291/2001).

The following spoke:


 Banotti, Quaestor, who informed the House that she was endeavouring, with the help of the IT staff,
to resolve the problems that Members had recently experienced in connection with the ‘Groupwise’
system; she also informed Members that, due to the security measures put in place at the airport, they
needed to be there two hours before departure;
 Lynne, who condemned once again the failure to observe the no-smoking signs in Parliament’s build-
ings (the President replied that provision had been made for special smoking areas).

7. Official welcome

On behalf of Parliament, the President welcomed Mrs Chantal Compaoré, wife of the President of Burkina
Faso and OAU Goodwill Ambassador for combating female genital mutilation, and Mrs Shamim Khan, the
Tanzanian Deputy Minister for Community Development, Women and Children, who had taken their seats
in the official gallery.
