GENERAL

Introduction
The gAVC 1200 is a new generation of High-End Gas Volume Energy Converters, designed with special
consideration to a quick and easy user interface for the gas company personnel as well as end users and
test laboratories.

The gAVC 1200 is a very flexible product which can be built up individually from a battery supplied unit, TZ
or PTZ converter, to a multi-functional, mains powered (HF pulse input, analogue output etc.) converter with
graphic - user configurable - display.

The system contains a large number of option boards (extension modules) for remote data monitoring, live
gas data update etc.
E.g. modem (GSM cellular phone), gas chromatograph, extra pulse inputs and outputs etc.

In that way, e.g. water and electrical meters can be connected and the counter values can be logged. The
modules can be mounted without breaking the metrological seal.

About this manual

The gAVC 1200 Functional Description will explain all main functions of the gAVC 1200 Gas Volume Energy
Converter. The Functional Description contains information about the gAVC unit, the pressure- and
temperature sensors.

The functionality of the various option boards, gAVC Configuration Program, other accessories etc., are
explained in separate documents.

Operating principle
gAVC 1200 records all volume pulses, that is received from the gas meter. If any pulses are registered, the
temperature and pressure are measured. After this, the system makes a conversion calculation and an
energy calculation, consequently updating all parameters.

Vb = Converted volume (Nm3)

Vc = Corrected volume (m3)
Pabs = Absolute gas pressure (barA)
Pb = Absolute reference pressure (barA)
Tb = Reference temperature (°C)
T = Gas Temperature (°C)
Zb = Gas compressibility factor at reference conditions ()
Z = Gas compressibility factor at actual conditions ()

Measurement
The interval between each measurement, may be set from 0…254 seconds; resolution = 2 seconds. 0 = no
measurement.
- 0 sec.: No measurement
- 2 sec.: Measurement every 2 seconds
- 60 sec.: Measurement every 60 second (every minute) - 254 sec.: Measurement every 254 seconds.

Note: Only even numbers may be used (0,2,4,6……). Uneven numbers will be ignored. If the interval is set to
“1”, the interval will automatically be set to “2”, intervals “3” will be set to “4” etc.

The measurement interval is set in the gAVC Config. Program in section “Miscellaneous”.
Every measurement consists of a pressure- and a temperature measurement. After this, the system makes a
correction calculation and an energy calculation (basic energy x conversion factor). When these values are
calculated, the parameter values are updated.
The min. and max. pressure are recorded for use in the interval and the 24-hour log.

Flow stop or decreasing flow are checked.

Pulse measurement (flow measurement)

The flow is measured as the time between pulses; resolution = 30.5 Ps, which corresponds to a max. error =
0.006% at max. flow. The min. measurement flow, that is calculated, is 1 pulse per 16 bit second.

Flow stop:
If the system does not detect pulses, there is no flow. Under “Flow stop”, you can set up a time that the
system must “wait” before flow stop is acknowledged. This feature is used to avoid unnecessary stops due to
flow deviations.
If no pulses are detected within the set-up time, there is a flow stop.
Flow stop is set up as a time. When this time is exceeded, the flow is set to 0 (no pulses).

If the time for the last pulse exceeds the time for the actual flow (faulty flow measurement), the flow is
adjusted at each measurement.

Meter reset
The gAVC 1200 meter may be completely reset.
x Disconnect the power supply.
x Connect the power supply; at the same time press the “Left” and “Right” arrow keys on the unit.
The standard display now shows “1”, followed by 120003.

Note: All volume and flow data are reset (set to “0”) and all logs, display and alarm settings are set with
default values, which means that they must re-configured. ´

INPUTS

Pulse inputs
There are 2 available LF-inputs on the gAVC 1200 unit. These inputs can be used separately or as a LF-LF
pulse check. This function is configured in the gAVC Config. program,
The inputs can be connected to a reed-contact, opto a.o. (See "Technical data" for more information).

Pulse transmitter requirements

For correct measurement, the pulse transmitter must fulfil the following requirements (worst case):
- Max. pulse frequency 3 Hz
- Fastest "On-time” 33msec
- Fastest "Off-time" 300msec
- Max. "On resistance" 1Kohm (LTL=0.7V; VCC=3.6V; Rpull up=43K; 3Hz)
- Min. "Off resistance" 4Mohm (UTL=2.9V; VCC=3.6V;Rpull up=470K; 3Hz)

Configuration
The pulse inputs are configured in gAVC Config.

PULSE INPUTS

Pull up supply Power supply 3..3.6VDC

Pull up resistor 32Kohm (open pulse input)

470Kohm (closed pulse input)

Pulse on, starting current Max. 120 PA

Pulse on, current (continuous) Max. 8PA

High trigger level 1.3 to 2.5VDC (PS=3.6VDC)

Low trigger level 0.7 to 1.8VDC (PS=3.6VDC)

Hysteresis 0.3 to 1.2VDC (PS=3.6VDC)

LF-LF
2 pulse transmitters can be connected to the 2 pulse inputs on the gAVC unit. The LF signals of these 2
pulse inputs are compared. That is why the function is called LF-LF comparison. The input works in the
same way on both LF inputs.

In the gAVC config program a max. pulse error is typed: The maximum number of pulses.
Then is typed pulse check: The number of pulses to be measured.

When there is a difference on the 2 pulse inputs more than [Max. pulse error] measured over [Pulse check]
time, an alarm is activated. The alarm is shown after “Max. pulse error” + 1. It is indifferent in which order the
pulses arrive.
Example: 10/1: 9 pulses on LF1, 9 pulses on LF 2. The pulses are recorded after pulse no. 10. No matter if
the pulses are counted displaced, for/after or on the same time.

[Max. pulse error] can be adjusted between 0-255, where 0 is equal to no LF-LF comparison. [Pulse check]
can be adjusted between 1-65535 pulses.

GA-02.028-EN-06.02.18

Max. pulse error is set to 3.
If the deviation on the 2 pulse inputs are bigger than 3 pulses, there is an alarm.

The deviation on
Input 1 the 2 pulse inputs = 4
pulses.

There is an alarm.

Input 2

Pulse check is set to 10.

Time - the pulse length that is measured - is set to 10.

Flow stop
If no pulses are received from the flow meter, all flow values are set at a value of “0". The time to pass
before all flow values are set at 0 can be adjusted under (flow stop after). The time can be set at 2-255
seconds.

Alarm limits
Alarm limit values can be adjusted for respectively max. uncorrected flow (flow max. limit) and maximum
converted flow (converted flow max. limit)

The units for the 2 parameters are respectively:

- Max. unconverted flow = m 3/h
- Max. converted flow = Nm 3/h

Analogue Inputs
The system has two galvanic isolated analogue inputs. The input may be set up as “passive” (4-20 mA) or as
“Active” (4-20 mA) inputs.
The input can monitor either temperature or pressure.

The interval = 1…255 seconds. Accuracy = 0.01%FS.

The calibration data is stores in an EEPROM.

Note: The system may be upgraded with an analogue option board

GA-02.028-EN-06.02.18

Alarm input
When an alarm occurs, a flag/bit is set in the alarm log (register). The alarm is activated when the input is
“opened”.
The alarm is set up in the gAVC Config. program.

Alarm set up:

* If "Cnt (Count)" is marked, the values of the parameter in question is accumulated in

a special log (error register). The accumulated values are not corrected/converted
(due to the error conditions).
** When the alarm disappears, the calculation of the parameter value returns to normal.
Tamper alarm
The gAVC 1200 alarm input is also called a "Tamper alarm". This input can be used for connecting
an alarm circuit. The alarm input is set "ON", when the alarm circuit is opened.
This function may be used to secure the pressure and temperature sensor wire from being cut or
damaged a.o.

Functionality:
- The alarm is OFF (normal), when the circuit between terminal IN and GND is closed.
- The alarm is ON when the circuit is opened.

Note: Remember to set up the Tamper alarm in the gAVC Config. section “Installation data”, “Alarm”. The
system can also record when the alarm disappears.

In case of a tamper alarm:

- The alarm light, and alarm text, in the gAVC display will light. The light will disappear when the alarm
disappears.
- The alarm is recorded in the “Alarm triggered log”.
- The alarm is added to the “Volume meas. at error” register.
- The alarm output goes “ON” (Low). The alarm output goes OFF, when the alarm is no longer present.
Door alarm
On the backside of the gAVC lid is a Reed-contact placed. When the gAVC door (lid) is opened, the Reed
contact is opened, resulting in a “Door alarm”.

OUTPUTS

Pulse outputs
gAVC 1200 has two, galvanic isolated, outputs. The output can be set up to show converted volume,
unconverted volume and energy.
The pulse output cycle time = 30…500 m sec.
If the pulse length = 0, the output is not activated.

Set up of pulse significance:

In the gAVC Config., you may specify, for each output, the number of units the system must “count” before
the output transmits a pulse.
0.1 => The output transmits 10 pulses every time 1 unit is counted.
1 => The output transmits 1 pulse per counted unit.
10 => The output transmits 1 pulse per 10 counted units.
100 => The output transmits 1 pulse per 100 counted units.

Volume/Energy output:
The following parameter can be shown:
a) Vol. corrected (m3) = Corrected volume
b) Vol. conv. (Nm3) = Converted volume
c) Energy (MJ)
d) Vol. Measured (m 3) = Measured volume
e) Vol. meas. at error (m 3)

Alarms
The following alarms may trigger the alarm output:
Tamper alarm The gAVC 1200 alarm input is also called a "Tamper alarm". This input can be
used for connecting an alarm circuit. The alarm input is set "ON", when the
alarm circuit is opened.
This function may be used to secure the pressure and temperature sensor
wire from being cut or damaged a.o.

EEprom error Alarm if there is a read/write error on the EEPROM at start up (power on).

Pressure sensor error Alarm is ON if the pressure value is outside the valid range (e.g. 0.9…6 bar).
The alarm may also occur if one of the pressure sensor wires are damaged.

Temperature sensor error Alarm is on when the temperature sensor value is outside the valid range (-
30°C to +60°C).

Pulse count error A LF-pulse control error. The alarm is ON, if the two LF inputs has a deviation
higher than the set value in “Installation data” → “Flow” → “Max. pulse error”.

Pressure sensor EEprom An alarm, that indicate, that the gAVC does not communicate with the
error pressure sensor (at start up). The error can be that one of the wires, “Serial
clock” (black wire) or “Serial data” (Orange wire), is disconnected.

Door alarm This alarm is activated when the gAVC lid is removed (a magnet is removed
from the reed-contact).

Mains power error An alarm that occurs, if there is an error on the external power supply.

Temperature low limit Alarm, if the temperature, is lower than the typed in value in “Installation data”
→ “Temp.” → “Temperature low limit”.

Temperature high limit Alarm, if the temperature is higher than the typed in value in “Installation data”
→ “Temp.” → “Temperature high limit”.
GA-02.028-EN-06.02.18

Pressure high limit Alarm, if the measured pressure value is higher than the typed in value in
“Installation data” → “Pressure” → “Pressure high limit”.

Alarm, if the measured flow value is higher than the value in “Installation data”
Flow high limit → “Flow” → “Conv. flow high limit”.

This alarm occurs, when the calculated energy, is higher than the typed in
Energy high value in “Installation data” → “Energy” → “Energy high limit”.

Alarm, if the temperature sensor, in the pressure module, is outside the

Pressure sensor temp. error measuring range.

Low battery warning This alarm occurs when “Battery remaining” (set up in GAVC Config.) reaches
“0”.

GA-02.028-EN-06.02.18

Standard battery autonomy time
Under reference conditions the battery has a typical autonomy time of 4000
days (10-11 years). The number of days is programmed to 4000 upon
delivery or after replacing the battery. The counter is decremented every day
by one and when it reaches 90 days, the "Low battery warning" is activated.

Non-standard autonomy time

For batteries (gAVC units) that are installed in an environment which
deviates from the reference conditions, such as very low or high
temperature, short log intervals etc., these parameters have to be taken into
consideration.

When the battery has been replaced, remember to change the battery
autonomy time in gAVC Config.

Conversion error Alarm, that occurs, if measured pressure or temperature is outside the typed
in range in “Pressure Range” and “Temperature Range. These parameters
are part of the Gas condition in section “Installation data” → “Conversion”.

Serial outputs
gAVC 1200 has two ways of data communication:
1) IR interface (optical interface) placed on the front of the unit.
2) Two serial output ports:
a) Serial A: Serial port A, negative (when not activated), RX data positive
b) Serial B: Serial port B, positive (when not activated), RX data negative

LOGGINGS

GA-02.028-EN-06.02.18

There are 6 different log functions in the gAVC 1200. The logs can be configured to read a broad range of
registers in gAVC 1200. With these it is possible to get a very accurate “picture” of status in the installation.

Logs Min. number Fixed number Max number

of logs of logs of logs

1) Interval log 380 3273

2) 24 Hour log 94 816

3) Alarm Triggered log 94 816

4) Snapshot log 94 816

5) Configuration log 100

6) Alarm log 100

For the first four of the log types the number of logs that can be stored depends on the number of registers
stored in each log. It's possible to select between 1 and 20 registers for each log. Each time the number of
registers stored in the log or a register is changed to another one the log is reset.

All the logs are of the barrel type, which means that when the log is full a new log value will overwrite the
oldest log value in the log.

Interval log
The interval log is used to read up to 20 values (registers) with fixed time intervals
The log can be set to log with the following intervals:

1 min., 2 min., 5 min., 15 min., 30 min., 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours.

Max. and min. values can be logged on the following registers:

- Pressure
- Temperature
- Converted flow
- Corrected flow = Measured flow (with LF pulses)

Settings: A) Select the number of registers to be logged. (The number of logs is automatic calculated).
B) Set the log interval
C) Select the registers to log
24 hours log
The "24-hour log" is used to read up to 20 values (registers) with fixed intervals of 24 hours. The time of the
log can be set with hour and minutes in the interval of 00:00 to 23:59.

Max. and min. values can be logged for:

- Pressure
- Temperature
- Converted flow
- Corrected flow = Measured flow (with LF pulses)
Settings: A) Select the number of registers to be logged. (The number of logs is automatic calculated).
B) Set the log time
C) Select the registers to log
GA-02.028-EN-06.02.18

Alarm triggered log
Alarm triggered log is used for reading up to 20 values (registers) at the time an alarm changes status.
It could e.g. be a great help when solving an error, if you also know the value for e.g. pressure, temperature,
at the moment an alarm arose.
Which alarms that triggers the log are specified under alarms (See general alarm description).

Settings: A) Select the number of registers to be logged. (The number of logs is automatic calculated).
B) Select the registers to log
C) Set the alarms to trigger the log
Snapshot log
The snapshot log expresses a “snapshot picture” of the actual registers in GAVC 1200. A reading with the
snapshot log can be activated manually from GAVC Config or from the graphical menu, using the puss
buttons. The snapshot log can with advantage be used e.g. during test of a unit.
In this case it can be useful to read the actual values for pressure, temperature, converting factor etc.

Settings: A) Select the number of registers to be logged. (The number of logs is automatic calculated).
B) Select the registers to log
Configuration log
The configuration log is used to register the “changes” executed from GAVC Config that affects the
metrological part of the registers. The configuration log can log the last 100 changes.

For each "event" is registered:

- Time
- Location (parameter name)
- Old value
- New value
- Operator

-
Alarm log
Up to 100 alarms can be logged.

For alarms are logged:

A) Date + time
B) Alarm type
C) Status:
- “ON”. The alarm is active
- “OFF” the alarm is not active

The alarms are divided into 3 groups: System alarms, limit alarms and input alarms.
System alarms: - Battery

Limit alarms: - Temperature max./min.

- Pressure max./min.
- Converted flow max.
- Unconverted flow max.
- Energy flow max.

Input alarms: - Pressure meter error (outside defined range)

- Temperature meter error (outside defined range)
- Pulse counter error (the 2 LF inputs do not count the same)
- Meter max. flow (configurable)
- Temperature max. error (configurable)
- Pressure max. error (configurable)

SECURITY

gAVC 1200 is “secured” in the best possible way. The unit has a “hardware” password which specifies the
max. allowed "software" password level.

The hardware password to each single register in gAVC 1200, is decided by two DIP switches placed in the
gAVC 1200 unit. These are factory set and shall normally not be changed.

The system is secured via 3 software passwords in gAVC Config.

The DIP switches are placed behind the gAVC 1200 metrological seal.

Hardware passwords
Switch 1 Switch 2 Password level Function
OFF OFF 0 Only reading of the unit (No password or not valid password)
OFF ON 1 Configuration of a few parameters.
ON OFF 2 Configuration of all parameters except metrological.
ON ON 3 Configuration of all parameters.
Software passwords User password
When gAVC Config. is started, you are asked to type in a User password. This password is set up in the
program. The first time GAVC Config. is started the "Super user" must set up the passwords (only the Super
user can set up the initial passwords).

Getting started
The first time the system is started, the username is default = admi (administrator). The password is empty.
We recommend typing in a super-user password when all users are specified.

User set up
The different users can be set up under “User” in the menu line. Here the super-user may create new users,
delete users and set up user rights and user password.

User rights/user password setup

When the <New user> button is clicked, a new window shows.
[ User ID]: Abbreviated user name (max. 4 characters)
[ Name]: User name (max. 36 characters)
[ Password]: User password (max. 8 characters)
[ Confirm password]: User password confirmation.

Rights:
[ Set up]: The user is allowed to make create/change configurations.
[ Write to GAVC]: The user is allowed to write the configurations to the GAVC unit.
[ User management]: The user is allowed to set up new users, delete users and change user rights.
