I. Introduction to the subject, scope, and type of book

The book Creative Writing is a instructive book written by Adele Ramet, first published in 1997
and first published in electronic form in 2007 by How To Content, a division of How To Books
Ltd Spring Hill House, Spring Hill Road, Begbroke, Oxford OX5 1RX. United Kingdom. Adele
Ramet is an author of short stories and articles for women's magazines and regional
newspapers in the UK and abroad. Her specialty is writing for publication. She is currently a
lecturer of higher education at South Essex College.

The book Creative Writing guides aspiring writers of fiction and non-fiction to improve every
aspect of their writing. The Author shares her top tips on how to create believable characters,
colorful settings, gripping dialogue, compelling articles and how to put a fresh slant to all your
work.

The general problem that the book addresses is on explaining clearly in a writer’s point of view
the proper ways of developing every aspect of writing creative fiction and non-fiction to new and
aspiring writers. It also provides a general guide in writing to advanced writers.

II. Overview of the Content

The following are the reactions in quotations of readers of the book Creative Writing by Adele
Ramet:

‘This is a book which merits a place on every writer’s bookshelf.’ -Writers’ Bulletin

"...plenty of hints and advice that really will improve the way you get your words down on paper.”
-Writers' Bookshelf

The Author of the book cites Chambers Dictionary that defines creative as ‘Having the power to
create, that creates, showing, pertaining to, imagination, originality and writing as ‘The act of
one who writes, that which is written, literary production or composition’. She therefore
concludes that the term ‘creative writing’ may be defined as: Having the power to create an
imaginative, original literary production or composition and can be applied to a very broad
spectrum of writing genres.

The book we will be looking at (1) ways of drawing on personal experience in order to write non-
fiction articles on a wide variety of topics in a number of different styles, (2) fiction writing and
the world of genre fiction – science, romance, horror and crime, (3) writing for children which
requires specialised skills that, once mastered, bring enormous satisfaction to both the writer
and the reader, (4) the impact of the Internet on the creative writer and the benefits of
Information Computer Technology. Finally, (5) there will be advice and guidance on how to turn
one’s writing into a marketable commodity for, even though many people set out to write purely
for their own pleasure, there is little doubt that nothing can compare to the thrill of having work
accepted for publication and reading it from a printed page.

III. My Reactions to the Book

As I read the book, the book is an ideal instructive book for creative writing. It targets every
aspect in first, developing ideas on how to write the parts of both fiction and non-fiction articles,
second is that it instructs the reader on how to pull the emotional aspect of the reader by
suggesting professional tips. Finally, it also suggests professional tips on how to improve a
literary work to make it into realization, that is, in its published form.

I find the book interesting as well. Although I am not into writing a creative fiction or non-fiction
at the present time, I think that the instructions in Creative Writing by Adele Ramet provides a
useful guide in forming one’s creative work from the idea itself to its realization.

I agree in every aspect of writing that the Author provided. The professional tips that she
suggested are fresh and effective. Although the book is subjective in providing its professional
tips, I find it operative because of the examples provided in every topic.

I have read other books that pertain to Creative Writing, and as I compared Creative Writing by
Adele Ramet to other instructive books, there are a lot of similarities. One thing that
differentiated it from the rest of what I have read is that the book “talks by itself”, meaning that
the author purposively wrote the book in way that she herself directly talks to the reader in a
conversational manner. This way of writing the book makes the world a bit smaller between the
author and the reader himself. With the other references that the Author provided, I think there
are no matters in Creative Writing that the book left out.

IV. Conclusion

As a writer, the book affected my writing techniques in terms of forming my own ideas. The book
as an instructive guide is professionally written according to how the Author writes her literary
works, and I find it effective. I find it very useful for my current course which is Master of
Education Major in English because it serves as a novel guide in preparing my own creative
work. As for me as a reader, the book has achieved its goal in teaching its readers. It analyses
the work, reveals the secrets on how to urge the reader to read for more and describes
specifically the ways on how to construct itself.
