PUTRAJAYA CAMPUS
Mid Term Examination
Academic Year 2018/2019
SEMESTER 2
TIME : 1 hour
Instructions to candidates:
1. DO NOT open this test booklet until you are asked to do so.
2. All answers and rough work must be done on this booklet. Use both side of the booklet.
A 100 MW steam power plant operates on a reheat Rankine cycle. The power plant receives
steam at the HP turbine inlet at 100 bar (P1) and 500oC (T1). The steam expands through the HP
turbine section and leaves at 10 bar (P2), 300oC. The steam then goes through a constant pressure
heating process in the reheater of the boiler, and returned to the inlet of the LP turbine section at
400oC (T3). The steam then expands through the LP turbine section exhausting into the condenser
at 0.1 bar (P4) as saturated vapor.
(a) Sketch by using Mollier (h-s) chart (Figure 1), the process flow of the steam through the
above steam turbine [7 marks]
(b) Determine the values for the followings:
(i) The actual specific enthalpy and specific entropy of the steam
a. at the inlet and the outlet of the HP turbine,
b. at the inlet and outlet of the LP turbine. [8 marks]
(ii) The mass flowrate of steam through the turbines in kg/s. [6 marks]
(iii) The entropy generated in the HP turbine and LP turbine. [4 marks]

Question 2 [15 marks]
(a) Describe what is a grid system. What is the highest voltage in the National Grid and who
own the grid? [5 marks]
(b) A typical power plant generating unit having 500 MW at maximum unit capacity rating
(MCR), has a record of average monthly load generation for the year 2012 as shown in the
figure below. Determine the availability factor, load factor and capacity factor of the plant for
the year 2012 [10 marks]

(a) A power generation system consists of four power plants as shown in Table 1 below. The
power generation system status for a day in a year, (marked D/M/Y), is also shown. If the peak
demand for that day is 2800 MW and occurs at 1300 hrs, determine the:
i) spinning reserve
ii) reserve margin
of the system. [4 marks]
(b) From Table 1 above, propose and justify which power plant is best used as:
i) base-load,
ii) intermediate-load,
iii) peaking-load
and justify your proposal. [11 marks]
