WORKFLOW THROUGH USE OF GIS AND REMOTE SENSING

FOR ANALYSIS OF GEOLOGY AND MINERAL DATA

GIS and Remote Sensing play a vital role in the resources management in general and
geological and mineral data analysis in particular. Following steps are involved
generating geological and mineral database for onward modeling and analysis.

Hardware and software requirements are as follow:

A. Hardware:

computer system Intel core I5 or above with all standard accessories and high
capacity RAM and data storage drive (three sets desktop and one laptop)

 One set inkjet color plotter AO size

 One set HP Scanner AO size
 One color printer A4 size
 One scanner A3 size
 One scanner A4 size
 3 sets of heavy duty GPS (Garmin)
 One set of heavy duty digital video/still GPS camera

B. Software:

 Arc GIS (Arc Info) multi user license with core module including all the
required additional extension. one set
 ErdasImagin/envi. 3 single user licenses with all allied extensions

C. Data:

 Digital toposheets of survey of Pakistan on scale1:100000( full coverage of all

FATA)
 Hard copy toposheets survey of Pakistan on scale 1: 50,000 (full coverage for all FATA)
 Areal photographs (full coverage for all FATA)
 All regional and detailed geological maps of entire FATA in hard copy form either
by FATA or GSP or Academia for any deposit
 Any mineral showing information for all FATA
 Geophysical map if any available
 Drill data of any mineral prospect of FATA Data
 Any prospect or mineral mine data of FATA
D. Satellite Data: ASTER data 15 meters full coverage for FATA
 SPOT colored 3band 2.5 meters ground resolution. full coverage for FATA
 Short Wave Infra-Red data for selected prospective areas of FATA
 LIDAR DATA full coverage for FATA
 MICROVAW RADAR DATA 5 Meters ground resolution full coverage for FATA
 Near Infra-Red TM band 90 meter ground resolution full coverage for FATA

E. Data acquisition stage:

At this stage the data is either captured in the field or is generated through digitizing
the available geological and mineral data. The field data is acquired through marking
geological and mineral horizons and maps are used to locate mineral bearing areas.
The process involves field location of samples and generating regional and detailed
geological mapping, lying out of grids, geo-chemical data, air born geophysics and
ground geophysics data. Drill hole location and down hole mineral log and assay
data. Mine design and resource visualization data, detailed prospection data.

 Data compilation and generation of multi-layer composite geo-database of the

entire allied field data will be integrated for onward data modeling and conceptual
planning and decision making. The available hard copy maps will be digitized in a
centralized referenced format to compile all the data in unified spatial bounds.

 Base map data will be added from other sources like Survey of Pakistan base map
information which include infrastructure like rail roads and tracks data, physical
features including terrain physiography, settlements, drainage system with rivers
and mountain topography. social and cultural features and heritage like public
places, graveyard, mosque, Eidgah, community centers, public parks and
abundant archeological sites if any will be digitized

 Generation of mineral concession data digitizing all the lease data within entire
geological domain of FATA.

After the available data is maintained then there is a stage of integrated analysis and
data modeling for assessment of the resources and planning for prioritizing development
plan in sequential stages and dissemination the same data in the potential investors to
facilitate them decision making and expediting the steps of resources development with
optimum confidence level

Role of Remote sensing in rock and mineral analysis provide effective tool to interpret
the potential mineral target with optimum level of confidence. There are various types
of satellite data which can effectively be used for geological mineral analysis.
These data includes Short wave Infra-Red, thermal Infra-Red, Near Infra-Red, Micro
Wave, RADAR, SAR, LIDAR, Visible Infra-Red and hyper Spectral data. The microwave
and LIDAR data helps in conducting terrain analysis and structural analysis for tectono-
genetic interpretation of association of any mineral with a particular tectonic setup.

Hyparian data helps to fine tune the search criteria for a particular mineral thus make it
possible to assess mineral at the deposit scale of any particular mineral. Short wave
infra-Red data is efficient for rock and mineral discrimination with more certainty to
model the area for a particular mineral commodity.

Given any type of the above data, it will be subject to spectral analysis and will be
incorporated in the integrated multy-layered data model for interpretation of rocks and
minerals. The Remote Sensing data and conclusions will be used as input to the GIS
system which will then become a part of the integrated data for onward analysis and
modeling.

Once the prospect data is generated, it will be populated with all the allied field data to
generate prospect file of any particular mineral target which will ultimately be distributed
among potential mineral investors and interested parties for onward follow up of the
same up to development stage.

Alongside all these operations of data generation, modeling and analysis, we will be
committed to train the staff of the mineral directorate for transfer of knowhow and
capacity building of the staff for maintaining the same technical trend on sustainable
bases.

This system will become an efficient tool for facilitating the investors in mineral sector
through information sharing and providing first-hand information through a one window
operation. The information will be disseminated all through a net portal, as well as
through conferences, seminars and symposium for this purpose to promote mineral
development and mining culture. The interested parties will be facilitated to encourage
them in deciding in right direction for time and cost effective development techniques to
develop the existing mineral resources with expedite pace with goal oriented
development initiative.
