WORK

5.0 CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE OF CEMENT BLOCK WORK

 Material approval must be taken in prior to plan the cement block work. Necessary test reports as well
as the specimen samples from the specialized manufacturers to be submit for Engineers approval.
Considering past test results as well as the test results of the submitted samples Engineer will approve
the manufacturer/ manufacturers to proceed the production of the cement blocks.
 Necessary approval will be taken in advance to product enough quantity of cement block for the work.
The production to be done in prior to store the blocks under curing period of 28days. Approved
manufacturers will be advised to pelleting the cement blocks as per the production dates & clearly
mention the date of production for easy identification of the lot.
 If any missing date of production in some of pallets it will be marked during the unloading process at
the site for easy identification.
5.1 Cleaning of the Surface

 Necessary area will be identified earlier referring architectural drawings/ approved shop drawings
for the block work. To setting out the base lines, necessary area of the floor slab will be cleaned.

 Cement concrete depositions, mud, dust will be removed & using compressed air line floor cleaning
will be done. If any area to be washed, it will be done by using proper arrangement of the water
line. However before start the setting out area should be cleaned & to be free from water,
otherwise marking cannot be done properly.
5.2 Setting out of the RRM Base lines
 With referring the approved drawing for block works, setting out will be done. Necessary offsets to
walls will be demarcated for the verification of the wall positions. After completion of the block
wall setting out, stiffener column locations will be marked before start the base line (1st course).
5.3 Drilling & placing of the stiffener column reinforcements
 As per the approved details drilling of the floor slab & inserting of the designated re bars for the
drilled holes will be done with cement grout. Drilling depth for respective re bar will be followed
as per the drilling depth specified for the chemical anchoring.
 After drilling & placing of the vertical re bar for the specified locations of the stiffeners block
work will be continued. Both side access to be provided for the block wall so the stirrup loading
& binding can be done after completion of the block work up to designated height of the 1st
stage.
 There is an advantage for doing the stirrups work after the block work otherwise cement mortar
deposition of the stirrups will be major problem while preparation of the stiffeners for
concreting.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR CEMENT BLOCK SUMMER SEASON LTD
WORK

 Part by part concreting will be done for stiffeners as parallel activity for block work.

5.4 Laying of 1st Course

 Block work shall be laid on composite cement mortar with 1:5 of Cement: Sand. Mixing machine will
be used to mix mortar with standard gauge box (1.25 Cu.Ft) for measure the materials. For manual
mixing necessary plywood sheet bed will be prepared. Mixing of dry materials for 3 times will be
done as per the SCA/4/1. Then after adequate water will be added to the mixing. Quantity of the
mortar will be arrange to full fill the requirement of 2Hrs working period. No longer than 2Hrs
mixed mortar should not be kept without using it. If 2Hrs period exceed without using, it must be
disposed without using to the block work.
 If pot mixer used for the mortar production ½ of cement bag (i.e. 0.625 Cu.Ft) can be mixed with
3.125Cu.Ft of River Sand. 2.5 times from the standard gauge box will be measure to get the correct
sand volume. Average 30-40Ltrs of water will be used for one mixing as per the BSR breakdown.
But as per the ambient condition of the working day/ moisture of the R/Sand adding of the water
can be varies. There will be a practical problem to use the pot mixers for upper floors, so most
preferred method for mixing of mortar will be manual mixing. Cleaning of the mixing bay time to
time will be done to remove the previous mixed mortar otherwise water absorption will be done by
previous mixer base layer & it will be a problem for mixing of new mortar mixer on same mixing
bed.
 Cement blocks should be clean while preparing for the 1st course work. It should be free from mud &
dust otherwise it will be a problem for the bonding each other courses. It any pallet or blocks
identified with mud or mud patches it should not delivered to construction location. Those should
be washed properly & let it to dry for some times & then after we can use those blocks for the
laying of courses.
 The first course of block wall should be laid with great care, making sure that it is properly aligned,
levelled and plumbed, as this will assist the mason in laying succeeding courses to obtain a straight
and vertical wall. Mortar thickness on horizontal & vertical joints will be maintained as 20mm.
Where necessary closers will be used by cutting the cement block using angle grinder as needed.
General separation by using hammer & chisel will not be used because during that process the
wastage percentage will be higher due to uneven separation of the block.
 After laying of the 1st course necessary checking & correction for off sets, angular errors, verticality &
alignment will be done. After verifying of all the criteria’s it may leave for get it dry. Otherwise
changes can be happened while working with the fresh 1st course.

5.5 Continuation of the Block Wall up to designated stiffener beam/ lintel height
 On pre laid starter course (1st course) continuation of the block wall will be done. Necessary door
openings, clearance for stiffeners & plaster thicknesses will be verified during the starter course.
 Place masonry top on the starter course to line & leveled with that. Masonry units will be assembled
together overlapped, so that the vertical joints are staggered from course to course. At the corners &
the wall intersections necessary closures for the providing of L joints & T joints will be used. As per
the stiffener column layout some locations of the L joints or T joints may terminated from the
S/Column. So ending of the cement block work will be done providing necessary clear cover
requirement for the reinforcement. Where necessary closures will be provided with grinder cut blocks.

 All masonry shall be laid accurately to dimensions indicated, plumed & true alignment line, plumb
corners, with level & accurately spaced courses, with vertical joint plumb, with fully mortared joints
with uniform width.

 All the courses to level to be levelled & mortar shall be spread only to the extent that it will be soft &
plastic when masonry units are bedded. Masonry units shall not be move after they have been settled
firmly to the laid mortar. Where the time frame mortar layer at the plastic limit, necessary adjustments
corrections will be don to get the exact accuracy for the course. If any correction identified after
settling the fresh mortar, those area to be removed & relaying of the blocks to be done on fresh
mortar.

 Wall shall be kept level at all times. Any portions of wall shall not installed higher than 1.5m in height
in any particular day. Carry up walls in a uniform manner by course by course by providing toothing
for other adjacent walls. Necessary provision for angles & reveals shall be kept true, square & plumb
bob.

 Where concrete column to be stiffen with the block work cement grout paste will be applies on the
column faces & then after end closure will be placed with mortar joint.

 Where un-finished masonry shall be stepped as follows. Continuation can be done with joining the
new one for provided toothing.

WORK

 Verticality accuracy will be checked with the demarcated offset for the base course & above courses
will be plumbed to base course to get the accurate verticality.

 Same tolerance for the concrete columns & walls will be applied for the masonry work.
 Required off set dimension will be checked in at several locations to achieve the plumbness
accuracy of +/- 5mm up to 1.5m height & +/- 10mm up to 1.5m to 15m.
 Contractor shall fulfill the necessary dimensions/ accuracy with in the above tolerance limits.

5.6 Concreting of the stiffener columns/ lintels/ stiffener beams

 As per the approved drawing for the stiffener column, Lintels, Stiffener beams RF work will be
completed & conventional formwork by using 15mm coated plywood & 2”x2” timber will be used for
the formwork system.
 After fixing of the formwork necessary brazing’s, jack supports will be done to seal the formwork with
block wall surface. If any gaps due to any errors/ irregularities of the block wall identified, it will be
sealed by using 6mm sponge sheets.
 After completion of the work concrete pouring will be done using specified grade 25 for the stiffener
columns, lintels & stiffener beams.
5.7 Continuation of the Block Wall up to finished height
 Above the stiffener beams/lintels same procedure will be followed to build up the balance courses.
While laying the 1st course on the lintel & stiffener beam, plumbing of the course will be done for the
base course. If any irregularities occurred during the courses build up to the lintel level, those errors
were corrected while placing the 1st course on lintel, stiffener beam.
 While closing the block work at the beam bottom level, grout paste application for beam soffit will be
done to roughening the soffit & then after cement block closure will be placed to seal the bock work

up to the beam bottom level. Usage of the cement grout later will be advantage for stopping of the
cracks arising from the block work to plaster finish.

 As per the last filling height sometimes cement block to be cut horizontally to get the necessary height.
 Both side joint surface preparation will be done to parallel with the block work, otherwise after setting
of the joint mortar balance filling or balance preparation cannot be done properly. While joint mortar
at the plastic limit necessary joint preparation should be done.

5.6 Curing of the Block wall (From the stage of laying 1st segment & then after up to the end of the
block work)
 Curing will be started after setting of the 1st stage of the block work. Continues 3 days should be cures
each stage of the block work. Water absorption of the cement block is acceptable stage for self-curing,
so time to time water spraying and wetting of the block wall to be done.
 Time to time observation & application of water to the wall to be done to have the desired bonding of
the cement mortar & cement blocks.
 For the curing of the stiffener columns, stiffener beams & lintels MasterKure 128 can be used.

6.0 QUALITY CONTROL AND QUALITY ASSURANCE METHODOLOGY

 Batching of the cement mortar mixer on volume basis will be done. So proper supervision to be done
while batching the mixer. After giving proper training to workers who are batching the mixer, work to
be started.
 Mixed mortar to be kept up to 2Hrs after the mixing. In any case 2Hrs exceeding happened, those
mixed mortar volume to be disposed without using for block work. Additional water adding can be
done as per the onsite ambient conditions, but time to be kept should be 2Hrs for the usage.
 Time to time accuracy checking (alignment, verticality) to be done to get the desired accuracy for the
masonry wall.
 For MEP chasing, designated depth of the chasing for each & every conduct/ pipe should be approved
by the Consultant Engineer. Otherwise increment of the depth of chasing will be a problem for the
strength of the block wall. Unauthorized chasing might adversely affect one or more of the functional
requirements of the walls e.g. its loadbearing capacity.
 Do not cut horizontal or raking chases to a depth exceeding one-third the thickness of the single leaf in
walls or leaves contracted of solid units.
