BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

Bacterial skin infections are very common and can affect any person at any age.
Although our skin is a good barrier against bacterial infections, however, sometimes
bacterial infections do occur and they can range from harmless to contagious.
Bacterial infections are classified as

 Minor ones such as like folliculitis, furunculosis and impetigo which can be
treated with simple topical antibiotics and Minor skin abscesses (sometimes called
furuncles and carbuncles)

 Serious ones such as cellulitis, Erysipelas, Wound infections, carbuncle and


abscess formation which require oral and sometimes IV antibiotics. Some
infections which have deep pus in them might require incision and drainage.

 Fungal infections are quite common and can be seen in all age groups. Fungi
usually grow in moist areas of the body like in the toe webs, axillae, the genital
area, buttocks and under the breasts. It is very contagious and can affect other
members of the family as well. Treatment is possible by topical and systemic
drugs.

WHO IS AT MOST RISK OF GETTING AN INFECTION


Skin types vary person to person, individuals with sensitive skin are at higher risk of getting an infection as
others.
Other factors that influence the risk factor are:

 Diabetic person - due to their poor blood flow and higher level of glucose in their blood happen to
have lower amount of white blood cells in their body, thereby decreasing their defense ability to fight
infections.

 Old age people - immune system suppresses with age

 People with following disorders

- HIV
- AIDS

-hepatitis

 People under chemotherapy

Treatment
Skin can develop an infection with as low as sunburn or flame by means of scratching. So pre cautionary
measures need to be taken at every stage
How can be prevent our skin from bacterial infections

The most elementary measure to prevent bacterial infection is keeping the skin clean and undamaged.

In case of a cut, the wound should immediately be cleaned and covered with sterile bandage. Apply
petrolatum to the exposed area for prevention of any bacterial invasion.

Don’t use any antibiotic ointment without doctor’s prescription as it has chance of developing allergy to the
antibiotic.
