AIM: TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF R-L-C SERIES AND PARALLEL CIRCUIT SIMULATION WITH

MATLAB

OBJECTIVE:
 Transient response of series R-L-C circuit using MATLAB.
 Transient response of parallel R-L-C circuit using MATLAB.

APPARATUS REQUIRED: MATLAB Software

THEORY:

For series R-L-C circuit:-

From the circuit, the KVL equation is:

di(t) 1
v(t) = i(t)R + L
dt C
∫ i(t)dt

Applying Laplace transform the above equation will become:-

1
V(s) = I(s) [R + + sL ]
sC

I(s) 𝐶𝑠
T.F = = -------- (i)
𝑉(𝑠) 𝐿𝐶𝑠 2 + 𝑅𝐶𝑠+1
For parallel R-L-C circuit:-

From the circuit, the KCL equation is:-

I(t) = IR(t) + IC(t) + IL(t)

𝑉(𝑡) 𝑑𝑉(𝑡) 1
I(t) = +𝐶 + ∫ 𝑉(𝑡)𝑑𝑡
𝑅 𝑑𝑡 𝐿

Applying Laplace transform the above equation will become:-

1 1
I(s) = V(s)[ + + 𝑠𝐶]
𝑅 𝑠𝐿

𝐿𝑠+𝑅+𝑅𝐿𝐶𝑠 2
I(s) = V(s)[ ]
𝑅𝐿𝑠

𝐼(𝑠) 𝑅𝐿𝐶𝑠 2 +𝐿𝑠+𝑅

T.F = = ---------------- (ii)
𝑉(𝑠) 𝑅𝐿𝑠

RESULT AND CONCLUSION:

The corresponding transient response of series and parallel RLC circuit has been shown in
this experiment using MATLAB software.

PRECAUTION:

1. Calculation in order to find out the transfer function in each case should be done
carefully and correctly.
2. The response should be properly plotted with appropriate X-label, Y-label, title,
legend, etc.
3. Proper attention should be taken in saving the file and in entering the values.
