Guidelines and FAQs

Thank you for your interest in the competitions at the India Science Fest 2020.
India Science Fest is holding two competitions: “Talk your Thesis” and “Perform your Project”.
The top five candidates in each competition would be presenting in front of 1000s of science
enthusiasts at the India Science Festival on 11th and 12th of January, 2020 in Pune.
Among the presenters, the top three winners in each category will be decided at the Festival.
The presenters will be selected through a competitive process by a judging panel comprising
our esteemed speakers, who are top scientists/professors from Harvard, MIT, Yale, UCSD
and more. The top 5 final shortlisted candidates will be recognized as ‘ISF Fellows’. These
final presentations will be mentored to give an excellent public talk.
This is an exciting opportunity to bring attention to your work - from scientists and society!
Below are the detailed guidelines.
Talk your Thesis
Who is eligible?
Anyone who is pursuing a MS/PhD/Postdoc or recently completed one
is eligible for this competition where they will give a ten minute, simple,
lucid, crisp and insightful talk.
All that you need to keep in mind!
 Necessary condition: Your work needs to be of great scientific
value backed by peer-reviewed publications (or under review).
 The thesis can be in any discipline so long as it has a strong scientific element.
 Your presentation should connect with non-specialists- the general educated public. For
instance, make a connect on how your work can explain/have ramifications for
everyone’s life, work life or science in general. Another way is to give an analogy to
something people can relate to. Or how your work answers a great scientific question or
helps your broader field move ahead.
 Presentation is key – it needs to be simple, understandable and impactful. We don’t like
“it was great because no one understood it”.
 You need to talk about your thesis, yes, but tell the audience about the broad scientific
question behind your work and where your work is placed – don’t try to explain some
esoteric details of your work – give us the big picture.
Please include the following in your application:
 A one/two page resume
 Abstract of your work with relevant references (upto 750 words). The bibliography for the
abstract would not count towards word limit.
 Annexure of your peer-reviewed papers or those under review. Please include PDF of all.
 A video of 2-5 minutes which is a sample of the talk you will give. This will be key for us
to understand how you will frame the story and tell it to a non-specialist audience. If you
are innovative, you will get a preference!
 Include a signed declaration stating “India Science Fest has permission to post my video
created for ‘Talk your thesis’ competition online on its youtube channel, website or social
media channels publicly.” We plan to share the good videos online and make you a
celebrity!

the ordinary and is presented in the most creative manner.
Age? You can innovate science at any age, so don’t be bothered.
