CWU Jazz Major Handbook

As of May 2008

This information and requirements for the jazz student are in addition to those
outlined in the CWU Music Student Handbook
(http://www.cwu.edu/~music/student/handbook.html).

Jazz Degree Title

The official title of the degree is BA Music Jazz Specialization. To avoid confusion when speaking
with faculty, administration, admissions, registrar, etc., use the title as it is above. Also remember
that while you do pursue a major instrument within this degree, that instrument is not attached to
the degree, for instance, there is no such thing as a “jazz drumset major”.

Jazz courses and when offered

This list represents when we would like to offer courses, but in practical reality, it may not always
occur this way. A good way to approach this is to enroll in courses as soon as you can fit them in
your schedule and beware that some courses are offered on an every-other-year basis.

CWU Jazz Major Handbook 1

Large Ensemble requirement for all music majors

This is a direct quote from the CWU Music Student Handbook

Major ensemble participation:

All music majors, including BM and BA degrees, must register for a major ensemble appropriate
to their major performance area during each quarter of enrollment as a full time student. The
ensembles designated as major ensembles are: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching
Band, Choir, Chamber Choir and University Orchestra. Exceptions to this requirement are as
follows: 1. Piano and guitar majors may, with permission of the applied instructor and approval of
the Department Chair, substitute up to 3 quarters of chamber music experience (MUS 217, 417)
for major ensemble credit. 2. Music Education majors are exempt from this requirement during the
quarter of student teaching. 3. Broad Area Music Education majors may enroll in a major
ensemble outside their primary performing area to fulfill the secondary area ensemble
requirements of that degree.

While it is true that the jazz degree requirements allow for 6 credits of large jazz ensembles to
count as “large ensembles”, this does not excuse you from the requirement listed above.

Required equipment and materials

Of course you should have an appropriate instrument of high quality as your major instrument. In
addition you must have the following equipment and materials

1. Fake book, either the New Real Book, or the New Legal Real Book, or similar
2. Metronome, electronic preferred such a Boss, Seiko or Korg
3. iPod (or similar) for listening
4. iPod microphone, or some other way to record yourself digitally for practice,
assignments (see Prof. Bruya for details on this)

Auditioning for the Jazz Degree

Before you can audition for the degree you must successfully complete a MUS164 jury for a level
change to 264 and enroll for 2 quarters at the 264 level. Once you have done this you can
schedule an audition with the Director of Jazz Studies. The audition requirements are below.

including:
*SWING: med. swing, fast swing, shuffle, funk (hip-hop)
*STRAIGHT EIGHTHS: straight 8th (bossa nova, mambo, salsa, samba, songo etc.)
*Sight-Reading *Be prepared to "trade 4's" on all of the above styles.

Degree Declaration
Once you have been accepted for the degree based upon your audition, you can declare your
new major by completing the proper paperwork in the Music Department Office. Once you have
done this you will be able to enroll in MUS365, Jazz Lessons, on your instrument.

Jazz Course Enrollment

All courses except MUS365 are open to all students, provided the proper requisites are
completed. If you are planning on being a jazz major and have not yet auditioned you can still
enroll in jazz courses and they will count towards the degree once you are admitted.

Limited Admittance
Due to departmental constraints there will only be 20 to 25 students in the jazz degree program at
any one time. This means a mix of about 2-3 vocalists, 2-3 pianists, 2-3 bassists, 2-3 drummers,
1-2 guitarists, 2-3 trombonists, 3-4 trumpets, 5-7 saxophonists. We expect that over time
competition for admission to the degree will become fairly high.

Advising
All degree advising will be done by the Director of Jazz Studies. Advising dates and times will be
posted on the "jazz board" outside of room 159 at the end of each quarter. Transfer or
prospective students may contact Chris Bruya directly for dates and times. You must sign up for
advising in order to register for classes. Advising sheets are available in the music office. You do
not need to fill in call numbers on the advising sheet ... just classes, times, and credits. Fill out
your schedule to the best of your ability prior to our meeting. You will not be able to register for
classes until you have been advised!

Jam Sessions
The CWU Jazz Student Club sponsors and organizes these events. As a jazz major your
participation in every jam session is necessary for your development of the concepts learned in
class. Generally these jams will be on weeknight evenings at a local business establishment. Pay
attention for announcements about times and places.

CWU Jazz Student Club

As a jazz major you need to become an active member of this organization. Look for membership
applications/process in the fall of each year.

CWU JAZZ JURY MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Each term all jazz majors will play a jury more or less following the prescribed list of items on the
Jazz Jury Rubric. Students can progress as quickly as possible and conversely, can also take
longer than proposed. However, substantial failure to meet the jury requirements will result in a
conference and review with the Director of Jazz Studies that could result in either probation or
elimination from the degree program.

See the accompanying document “Jazz Jury Rubric”

JAZZ SENIOR RECITAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

(Senior Project)
If the student chooses to do a recital for the Senior Project portion of the degree, these are the
requirements and details.

1. Play a solo transcription from memory, with small group accompaniment.

2. Play one tune from each "Jazz Period": a. Early Jazz (Pre-40's) b. Bebop c. Hard Bop
d. Cool School (West Coast) e. Contemporary (post "60's", modal, fusion, electric, etc.)

3. Play one tune in a Latin style

4. Ballad

Two of the above styles must be arranged for a minimum instrumentation of 3 horns and rhythm
section (original arrangement, including score).

Piano and guitar must play at least one piece acapella.

Original tunes are encouraged but not required. Music may be used by other members of the
group but must be memorized by the soloist (individual giving the recital).

Solos should be restricted to primarily feature the student giving the recital. A brief historical or
musical description of each tune should be "scripted" in advance of the recital. Total length of
music should be 60 minutes.

Dress: No jeans, t-shirts or tennis shoes by any of the performers! Dress appropriately.

SENIOR RECITAL JURY What is Required?

1. Students must schedule and pass the recital jury before scheduling the recital date. Each
recital jury must be scheduled in advance with the appropriate Applied Area Coordinator.
(Teacher will assist their students to arrange this).

2. There are (3) "windows of opportunity" to take a recital jury

a. The quarter prior, at a time set aside during juries;

b. At a prearranged time during the week prior to the beginning of classes;

or c. During weeks 1-4 of the quarter in which the recital is anticipated.

3. After the recital jury has been passed, the Music office will allocate and schedule student
recital dates on a "first come, first serve" basis. There is a strict limitation on the number of
recitals that can be scheduled during the last 2 weeks of any quarter.

For scheduling senior recital contact the CWU Music Office.
