As of May 2008
This information and requirements for the jazz student are in addition to those
outlined in the CWU Music Student Handbook
(http://www.cwu.edu/~music/student/handbook.html).
While it is true that the jazz degree requirements allow for 6 credits of large jazz ensembles to
count as “large ensembles”, this does not excuse you from the requirement listed above.
1. Fake book, either the New Real Book, or the New Legal Real Book, or similar
2. Metronome, electronic preferred such a Boss, Seiko or Korg
3. iPod (or similar) for listening
4. iPod microphone, or some other way to record yourself digitally for practice,
assignments (see Prof. Bruya for details on this)
2-Ballad
Be prepared to:
b) Embellish the melody using jazz interpretation (Pianists and Guitarists may play
one standard unaccompanied)
C. Scales
ALL Major Scales Half Note M.M.=120
D. Sight-reading
The audition will also consist of sight reading different styles of music. Jazz, Latin,
Straight 8th (Latin or rock).
Some examples of Standards: All The Things You Are, Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, But
Beautiful, Darn That Dream, My Romance, There Will Never Be Another
You, Yesterdays, Watch What Happens, Trustee, Like Someone in Love, Take the A
Train, There Is No Greater Love.
Some examples of Blues: Sonny Moon for Two, Tenor Madness, Blues Walk, Straight No
Chaser, Footprints, All Blues, Blue Monk, Billie's Bounce, Now's the Time.
Degree Declaration
Once you have been accepted for the degree based upon your audition, you can declare your
new major by completing the proper paperwork in the Music Department Office. Once you have
done this you will be able to enroll in MUS365, Jazz Lessons, on your instrument.
Limited Admittance
Due to departmental constraints there will only be 20 to 25 students in the jazz degree program at
any one time. This means a mix of about 2-3 vocalists, 2-3 pianists, 2-3 bassists, 2-3 drummers,
1-2 guitarists, 2-3 trombonists, 3-4 trumpets, 5-7 saxophonists. We expect that over time
competition for admission to the degree will become fairly high.
Advising
All degree advising will be done by the Director of Jazz Studies. Advising dates and times will be
posted on the "jazz board" outside of room 159 at the end of each quarter. Transfer or
prospective students may contact Chris Bruya directly for dates and times. You must sign up for
advising in order to register for classes. Advising sheets are available in the music office. You do
not need to fill in call numbers on the advising sheet ... just classes, times, and credits. Fill out
your schedule to the best of your ability prior to our meeting. You will not be able to register for
classes until you have been advised!
Jam Sessions
The CWU Jazz Student Club sponsors and organizes these events. As a jazz major your
participation in every jam session is necessary for your development of the concepts learned in
class. Generally these jams will be on weeknight evenings at a local business establishment. Pay
attention for announcements about times and places.
(Senior Project)
If the student chooses to do a recital for the Senior Project portion of the degree, these are the
requirements and details.
2. Play one tune from each "Jazz Period": a. Early Jazz (Pre-40's) b. Bebop c. Hard Bop
d. Cool School (West Coast) e. Contemporary (post "60's", modal, fusion, electric, etc.)
4. Ballad
Two of the above styles must be arranged for a minimum instrumentation of 3 horns and rhythm
section (original arrangement, including score).
Original tunes are encouraged but not required. Music may be used by other members of the
group but must be memorized by the soloist (individual giving the recital).
Solos should be restricted to primarily feature the student giving the recital. A brief historical or
musical description of each tune should be "scripted" in advance of the recital. Total length of
music should be 60 minutes.
Dress: No jeans, t-shirts or tennis shoes by any of the performers! Dress appropriately.
3. After the recital jury has been passed, the Music office will allocate and schedule student
recital dates on a "first come, first serve" basis. There is a strict limitation on the number of
recitals that can be scheduled during the last 2 weeks of any quarter.
*Music Core Requirements for this degree include the following: 1. MUS 341, Conducting I, is not
required for this degree. 2. 12 credits of Ensemble includes minimum of 6 credits of Large Ensemble and 6
credits of either MUS 432 or 410, Major Jazz Ensemble. 3. 12 credits of Applied Music includes a
minimum of 6 credits of MUS 264, and 6 credits of MUS365, Applied Jazz.
Note that MUS255, Keyboard Harmony, is a pre-req/co-req to both Improv and Arranging and
should be taken as soon as possible.
