Abstract

This paper describes the design and fabrication of composite plastic shredder Machine which is an
essential part of Recycling Unit. As plastic is inexpensive durable and can be molded into any
shape and after its usage it is thrown into in open environment which cause pollution. Our
Requirement is to provide healthy and Eco-Friendly environment. To solve this problem there are
many machines are available in market but they are very costly. Therefore, our intention is to make
such Machine which is inexpensive and easy to repair and maintain and reduced post-consumer
composite plastic waste accumulation and can be used in domestic as well as in Industry. This
Machine is designed on a 3D Modelling Software and its analysis is done by ANSYS.
Keywords: Blades, plastic waste, Gear Mechanism, Hopper, Spacers etc.

First, we would like to thank our parents who have extended their helping hand towards
us whenever needed and did not let us down on any occasion and event. They have put their
efforts to make this possible. So, we pay our tribute to them in the form of this book.

We are especially grateful to our supervisor Engr. Javed Ahmed Khan Tipu Lecturer at
Department of Mechanical Engineering, FET, International Islamic University for his extended
support by supervising and giving us, advice whenever needed and providing resources to
develop this project. Our project is one of the best projects in the Open House and this all became
possible with his supervision and support.

Project Title:

Design and Fabrication of Composite Plastic Shredder Machine.

Background:

As we know that plastic is very essential part of our life because most of the product are made of
plastic but problem is that it is not biodegradable material and when it is thrown in an open
environment like landfills or in rivers it causes serious harmful effect on our environment. To
provide healthy and Eco -Friendly environment there are many shredder machines are available in
market. As plastic is reusable material therefore shredder machine is one of the essential
components of recycling unit. Shredder Machines are used to crush plastic into smaller pieces with
help of blades used for recycling process. But our requirement is to make such type of shredder
machine which is compact in size, has less manufactured cost, easy to repair it and has capacity to
crush not only bottles but also composite type plastic.

Plastic:
Plastic is a polymeric material and classified according to their polymer backbone structure and
side chain and has ability to transformed into any shape with the application of high pressure and
temperature. There are more than 10,000 different kind of plastic present in the world. Raw
material which is essential for plastic are petroleum and natural gas. Sometimes Fossil fuels
combined with some other element like gas and chlorine to make plastic.

Chemical Composition of Plastic:

Plastic is divided into two main categories on the basic of their chemical composition. One
category is that plastic that is made up of polymer that contain straight line carbon atoms in their
backbone structure. Polypropylene is the example of this type of category. While the other
category is that plastic is made of heterochain structure. These compounds contain atoms oxygen,
nitrogen, sulfur in their structure in addition to carbon. Example of this type of category is
Polycarbonate which contains two rings of benzene in their structure.

Classification of Plastic:
There are thousands of different kinds of plastic available in the world because it is inexpensive
and easy to manufacture and because of almost all application can made from it. Even through
different kind of plastic available in world but plastic manufactures divide plastic into two main
categorizes which are Thermoset Plastic and Thermoplastic. Both of this plastic polymer are very
common in our life. Thermosetting plastic once hardened and cooled, retain their shape and cannot
return to original shape. They are durable and hard. Most of the aircraft parts and automotive parts
like tires are made from this type of plastic. Thermoset plastic can melt and take shape once but
when it is solidified it stays solid and the chemical reaction occurs which is Irreversible. While
other category is Thermoplastic which is less rigid than Thermoset plastic. These types of plastic
melts when heat is provided and can change its shape. These types of plastic can easily mold and
extruded into films and packaging. Examples of these type of plastic are Polyethylene (PE),
Polypropylene (PP), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) .
