A3300M Maritime computer

1 Before you start

1.1 Read this first

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY PRIOR TO UNPACKING AND STARTING YOUR COMPUTER!

There will normally be two additional boxes inside the larger box that contains the
computer. One of these boxes will contain the keyboard and the other will be an accessory
box. Inside the accessory box will be user manuals and CDs, the mouse, power cords and
other accessories for the computer.
The keys to open the front cover of the computer are attached to the backside of the
computer.

The computer can be ordered with an operating system. If Microsoft Windows® 2000,
Windows® NT 4.0 or Windows® XP is ordered, the operating system will have been pre-
installed at the factory. When you first turn on the computer, you will enter a “mini-setup”
program. The setup wizard will then allow you to make final settings to complete the
installation of the operating system to your individual requirements. It should take about
5 -10 minutes to complete the “mini-setup” program.

The setup wizard will ask you to enter information that is pertinent to your individual
situation. These will include items such as regional settings, personal/company
information, computer name, administrator password and date and time. You will also be
asked to enter the Microsoft product key. There is a sticker with the product key attached
to the left side of the top cover of the computer.

When you are completing the setup wizard, the computer may occasionally pause for long
intervals. While it may appear that the computer has “frozen”, the setup wizard is busy
searching for specific hardware drivers or configuring the computer to ensure proper
operation. DO NOT click computer keys, restart or try to force the computer to respond in
any way during these intervals. The setup wizard will continue once it has completed the
task at hand.

If a network interface card is ordered, the driver is installed and the network settings are
set to typical. This means that the TCP/IP protocol is installed with the DHCP
configuration. The computer is configured as a workstation in a workgroup. This is our
default setting. If the customer has ordered a different configuration, the settings may be
different from the typical settings.

All drivers have been pre-installed for the devices that have been ordered with the
computer. There should be no need to install drivers for devices that are installed in the
computer at the factory.

IMPORTANT NOTE!
If the customer adds new hardware devices to the computer that are not approved by the
Classification Societies, the approval issued with the computer will not be valid.

5.3 System memory

Warning:
When the DRAM Power LED lit red, it indicates that power is present on the DDR2 sockets.
Power-off the PC then unplug the power cord prior to installing any memory modules.
Failure to do so will cause severe damage to the motherboard and components.

The system board supports 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets. The four DDR2 DIMM sockets on
the system board are divided into 2 channels:
x Channel A - DDR2-1 and DDR2-2
x Channel B - DDR2-3 and DDR2-4

The system board supports the following memory interface.

Single Channel (SC)

Data will be accessed in chunks of 64 bits (8B) from the memory channels.

Dual Channel (DC)

Data will be accessed in chunks of 128 bits from the memory channels. Dual channel
provides better system performance because it doubles the data transfer rate.

Single channel x DIMMs are on the same channel.

x DIMMs in a channel can be identical or
completely different. However, we highly
recommend using identical DIMMs.
x Not all slots need to be populated.
Dual channel x DIMMs of the same memory configuration are on
different channels.

5.5.5 S/PDIF
S/PDIF is a standard audio file transfer format that transfers digital audio signals to a
device without having to be converted first to an analog format. This prevents the quality
of the audio signal from degrading whenever it is converted to analog. S/PDIF is usually
found on digital audio equipment such as a DAT machine or audio processing device. The
S/PDIF connector on the system board sends surround sound and 3D audio signal outputs
to amplifiers and speakers and to digital recording devices like CD recorders.

5.5.6 Serial ATA
