Production methods
Paint producers’ dilemma

Paint producers’ requirements: Paint users’ requirements:

„ Limited number of colors „ Full range of colors

„ Minimum products/changes „ New products continually
„ Large batch sizes, minimum
color changes, long runs
„ Regular predictable demand „ Immediate delivery (JIT)

„ Stock of final product at user „ Nil/negligible stock of paint

„ Highest possible price „ Lowest possible price

„ Opacity / transparency / tint strength

During grinding the pigment undergoes Paint manufacturers sometime sacrifice

significant changes in hue, tint strength and the extra strength to avoid running longer
